Inter Milan are closing in on the signing of Israel international Anan Khalaily in a transfer that is causing huge controversy. Some fans and human rights activists believe that Inter are whitewashing both Israel’s genocide of the Palestinian people and their apartheid state by buying an Israel international. Nima Tavallaey conducted three important interviews with Dr. Thair Abu Ras of the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute, Andrew Feinstein who is a former member of the South African parliament for ANC under the leadership of Nelson Mandela, and Palestinian football journalist Bassil Mikdadi from Football Palestine to discuss all aspects of this issue.Timestamps00:00 - Intro: Background - Why We Did This Episode02:24 - Dr Thair Abu Ras Interview - Who Are The '1948 Palestinians'?04:38 - "Systemic Discrimination In All Walks Of Life Of Palestinians Who Are Citizens Of Israel"07:26 - Apartheid In Israel In Practice - The South Africa Comparison09:54 - Relationship Between Palestinian Citizens Of Israel & The State - "Parallel Worlds"14:47 - How Big Of A Propaganda Win Anan Khalaily Joining Inter Milan Is For Israel16:34 - The Anan Khalaily Conundrum - The Complexity Involved22:00 - The Only Way For Israel To Change Its Ways Is Via "External International Pressure"26:06 - "Inter Milan Fans Should Show Their Disapproval To Anan Khalaily"29:30 - The Different Forms Of Apartheid In Israel32:08 - Andrew Feinstein Interview - Why Apartheid South Africa Was Boycotted In Sports38:06 - "No Normal Sport In An Abnormal Society"48:40 - How Apartheid South Africa Were Excluded From FIFA & The IOC52:00 - "FIFA & UEFA Moral Turpitude As Well As Being Materially Corrupt"55:30 - Bassel Mikdadi Interview - Currently 4-5 Players In Palestine National Team With Israeli Citizenship59:44 - The Ataa Jaber Situation - From Captaining Israel U21 To Switching To Palestine01:03:33 - The Lobbying Process Behind Getting Palestinians To Play For Israel01:07:35 - Israel Interior Minister Called For Ataa Jabeer To Lose Citizenship01:11:45 - Harassment Of Palestinian Footballers With Israeli Citizenship By Israel01:14:18 - Why Palestinians 'Choose' To Play For Israel?01:16:28 - "Mindboggling" How Anan Khalaily Still Plays For Israel01:18:30 - "Inter Milan Fans Can Support Their Club Without Spending A Red Cent On Them" If you want to support The Italian Football Podcast, be able to send in questions AND get every episode with NO ads, simply become a member on Patreon.com/TIFP OR Spotify OR YouTube Memberships. Summer 2006. Italian football was in crisis. Just weeks before the World Cup began, the Calciopoli scandal exploded, threatening to tear Serie A apart.
Juventus would be relegated, titles stripped, and some of Italy’s biggest clubs found themselves at the centre of the biggest scandal in modern Italian football.
Many believed the Azzurri were finished before a ball had even been kicked. But what followed was one of the greatest World Cup campaigns ever seen.
Led by the brilliance of Andrea Pirlo, the leadership of Fabio Cannavaro and Gianluigi Buffon, and a team spirit forged in adversity, Marcello Lippi’s men would navigate controversy, drama, extra-time heartbreaks, a legendary semi-final against Germany, and one of the most infamous moments in football history.
This is the story of Italy’s victory at the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
Ps. We've had to reschedule our interview with Mirko Di Natale regarding the Juventus deep dive to next Monday due to unforeseen events. So instead we're publishing this historic throwback.

The FIFA World Cup is supposed to be football’s greatest celebration - a month where politics takes a back seat, nations come together, and the beautiful game takes centre stage.
But as the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off across the United States, Canada and Mexico, many fans are asking a very different question: has this tournament already become the biggest mess in World Cup history?
From visa chaos affecting fans, officials and even FIFA-appointed referees, to entire groups of supporters being unable to attend matches, soaring ticket prices, travel nightmares, geopolitical tensions, and growing concerns over FIFA’s leadership, controversy seems to be following this World Cup everywhere it goes.
Visa denials are affecting officials and referees, while disputes involving Iranian supporters and travel restrictions have cast a shadow over the tournament before many games have even begun.
Nima Tavallaey is invited onto various media platforms (BBC, TalkSport, Al Jazeera, Time Radio etc) to discuss the storm surrounding FIFA 2026: the political battles, the fan backlash, the referee controversies, the travel restrictions, the U.S.–Iran tensions, the questions over fairness and accessibility, and the mounting criticism directed at FIFA President Gianni Infantino and the organization itself.
Whether you believe football and politics can never truly be separated or you think FIFA has completely lost control of its flagship competition, one thing is becoming impossible to ignore: before a ball has even been kicked in anger, the 2026 World Cup is already generating headlines for all the wrong reasons.
So is this simply a difficult tournament facing extraordinary circumstances, or are we witnessing the most chaotic and politically charged World Cup ever staged?
