How does colours in the city affect our mental health and well being?
In this episode of "The Sound of Colour”, I visit colour designer Dagny Thurmann-Moe.
Dagny is one of Norway’s leading colour designers and has run her own studio KOI Colour Studio for more than a decade. She is a well-known face in the norwegian media and often comments on the use of colour, trends and the value of the proper use of colour in both architecture, interiors and fashion.She has designed colour schemes for a range of city facades and residential blocks, written a book on colours, and launched her very own paint range.
In this episode Dagny tells me how her mother embraced her keen love of colour and let her decorate their entire house at the tender age of just fifteen and that the only design TV show she loves is Grand Design with Kevin McCloud.
She has a profound interest in colour and her work focuses on how colours and materials affect our surroundings and especially our mental well being. I would say, that Dagny has made it her mission to fight the battle against an increasingly achromatic existence. In this episode we talk about the affects of the lack of colour in modern life, both in our city scapes and inside our homes. Dagny shares many insightful facts about what this can do to our mental health and how we can prevent that.The episode ends with the musical experiment “The Sound of a Colour”, this time it is composer and musician Sam Mumford that creates the sound of Pale Terracotta.

Welcome to the very first episode of "The Sound of Colour” podcast.
This episode is a special live recording held during 3 Days of Design in Copenhagen in collaboration with Montana. At the event I had the pleasure of having the two brilliant guests colour and textile designer Margrethe Odgaard and artist and writer David Batchelor.
In this episode we talk about the meaning of colour, how colour is defined and how and why, especially designers, can struggle with colour. We investigate how we can get architects, artists and designers to embrace colours. And last but not least Margrethe Odgaard shares the insights on naming all the colours she designed for Montana, while David Batchelor elaborates on his book ‘Chromophobia’.
The episode ends with the musical experiment ‘The Sound of a Colour”, this time by musicians Morten Køie and Martin Høgild as they create the sound of Acacia yellow and Pantone 292 blue.
