At the end of June 2014, Lars and 5 of his friends took a lads holiday to Bulgaria. This was Lars' first holiday outside of this home country, Germany, and unlike his usual trips to go fishing or diving.
The week flew by filled with swimming, laughter, drinks and, with the World Cup being on - plenty of football.
On the 3rd July 2014, Lars and his friends went to watch the Argentina V Netherlands match in a local bar, when they ran into an altercation with another group of lads over football. Following this fall out, Lars' friends headed to McDonalds, but Lars told them he was going to walk back to the hotel - when his friends returned - Lars wasn't there.
The next morning, Lars reappeared and told his friends he had been beaten up by a group of 4 men the bar had hired, although not looking like he had been beaten up, Lars did complain of ear pain and went to see a local doctor who diagnosed a burst eardrum. The doctor told Lars he would not be able to fly home on the 7th July as planned, but referred him to see another doctor in nearby city, Varna.

Lars friends flew home as planned, despite offering to stay with Lars, the following day, Lars mum had paid for him to fly back to Hamburg but asked that he see the airport doctor prior to the flight to ensure he would be ok to fly.

Other strange events happened in the lead up to him fleeing - tune in now to find out what and to hear the theories around what happened to Lars Mittank.

This weeks episode comes from New Hampshire, America - and despite being classed as Unsolved, seems to have a pretty obvious ending, however, despite multiple witnesses - one of which including a confession - no one has ever been arrested in connection to the murder of Trish Haynes.
Trish was 25 years old when in January 2018, she travelled from Florida to New Hampshire to attend a court date in relation to a false allegation claim. Trish initially had stayed with a good friend, but due to the court date being pushed back and her feeling isolated, she moved in with an old "classmate" Ashlee Smith, her husband Doug Smith and the five children between them.
It was after this move, that family back in Florida started noting some red flags, Trish stopped communicating with them, had claimed to have lost her phone and was given a set time as to when she could use Ashlee's phone. Trish had always been exceptionally close to her maternal grandmother, Sandy and her great aunt, Val - and when this communication started to seize - Sandy and Val became concerned.
Ashlee told them that Trish wanted nothing more to do with the family, but not believing this, Sandy told Ashlee she wanted to hear this from Trish's own mouth and if she didn't contact within a set time, Sandy would report Trish as missing.
Following being filed as am missing person, New Hampshire Police received a tip off - search Grants Ponds - what they found was horrifying. At the depths on the pond was a washer dryer combo, inside were human remains - these belonged to Trish.
Despite this finding, Sandy was told by police not to tell anyone that they had found Trish's body.
Witnesses started to come forward as to how Ashlee and Doug had treated Trish - yet to this day, neither have been arrested in connection to her murder.

This weeks episode is a listener recommendation, thank you Sally.
Johanna Young was just 14 years old when she left the family home on the 23rd December 1992. It is unknown where she was going, but her parents assumed she was going to either visit her boyfriend or a friend.
On Christmas Eve, the family were awoken by Johanna's alarm going off for her paper round and when they popped in to wake her up, they realised she wasn't there. The previous evening had been cold and foggy in Watton, Norfolk, and parents thought she must have decided to stay at a friends but when the news agents phoned at 7am to ask where Johanna was, panic began to set in.
After failing to locate Johanna by calling family and friends, she was reported missing and searches began around the small village in efforts to find her. Christmas went as a blue for the Young family, as despite organised search efforts by police and family, Johanna had still not been found.
On 26th December, Boxing Day in the UK, a dog walker found a pair of trainers neatly placed in some undergrowth and with the news of the missing teenager rushing through his mind, he called the police. Just 120 meters from her trainers, Johanna was found, face down in a pit.
A murder investigation was launched, arrests were made but 34 years on, no one has been charged with her murder.

Melanie Hall's disappearance and murder has remained one of the UK's biggest unsolved crimes that now spans nearly 30 years.
On 8th June 1996, England was buzzing as the start of the Euro 1996 tournament opened with England playing Switzerland at Wembley. Despite the anti-climatic game ending in 1-1 draw, in Bath, Somerset 25 year old Melanie had planned a night out with her boyfriend and some friends. They had ventured to Cadillac's Nightclub to let their hair down and enjoy the evening.
When her boyfriend came out of the toilet and saw Melanie dancing with another man, he left feeling hurt but knew Melanie was with friends. At 1:10am on the 9th June, the two friends Melanie was with also left, not knowing that this would mean leaving Melanie alone as they assumed her boyfriend was still there.
More assumptions happened over the weekend, her boyfriend assumed Melanie had gone back to her home she shared with her parents, her parents thought she was still with her boyfriend and so when she failed to turn up for work on Monday morning - alarm bells started to ring.
Avon and Somerset Police were on high alert from the first report, and as time went on with no word from Melanie, they knew they were dealing with more than just a missing persons case.
on 5th October 2009, 13 years after Melanie disappeared, human remains were found at the side of the M5 motorway - these remains, belonging to Melanie and so the murder investigation could be launched. Despite items being found by Melanie's body leaving evidence, no DNA was able to be determined.
Police looked in to multiple known serial killers who may have links, but these ended up being ruled out.
After 30 long years, Melanie's family are now desperate for answers - why was she murdered, and by who?

This weeks episode discusses the opinion of suicide - extra care must be taken when listening.
Rey Rivera's case is one that has played on my mind for years, despite forgetting where I had first watched the case and Rey's name, I was reminded recently and decided to cover the case.
Rey was in his early 30's, he had just married the love of his life, Allison and the couple were currently residing in Baltimore, Maryland. Rey was a writer and his goal in life was to write screen plays however, in May 2006, he was writing newsletters and making videos for his oldest friend, Porter Stansberry for his company Stansberry and Associates.
However, Rey and Allison had recently made plans to move back to California, Rey had been writing a screenplay and had spoken to some big names in LA regarding it, they had also discussed plans to start a family.
On 16th May 2006, Allison was on a work trip and she tried to call Rey in the evening for the pair to catch up, but his phone went straight through to voicemail. When Allison spoke to their houseguest, she told Allison that Rey had taken a call and left abruptly.
When Rey hadn't returned by the next morning, Allison knew something was wrong, and so began a week long search with efforts from Allison, Rey's family and the police to find him.
A week later, his body was found in a hotel conference room, at first it seemed like a clear suicide but the more the case was looked into, the more questions arose.
Rey's body had extensive injuries including two breaks in his leg that the medical examiner deemed as not consistent with a fall from height.
So, what happened to Rey? Listen in to hear the twists and turns of his case.

It was November 1993 in Ipswich, England, snow had fallen on the ground and young couple Karen and Peter had started to prepare for their wedding following the birth of their daughter Emily.
On Sunday 21st November, Peter had picked up a shift at work and offered to drop Karen to her parents, where she would usually go to spend time with them, however, on this Sunday Karen declined the lift and instead choosing to stay at home and do some housework. Peter left for work at 3:50pm, his future in laws stopped by to see him at work around 4:15pm and said they would pop in to see Karen, when they arrived to Karen and Peter's home on Lavenham Road, they were met with a shocking scene - Karen was dead, with multiple stab wounds and her body had been set alight - just feet away, sat 18 month old Emily.
Multiple witnesses recall seeing a man in the area, all describing him to be between 20-30 and wearing a Parker jacket, but to this day, no one has been charged with her murder.
But the biggest question has always been - why? Karen didn't appear to have enemies.

On the 12th April 2016, 16 year old Mekayla got up and got ready for school like any other day. Her grandmother dropped her to Sacred Heart High School in Yorkton, Canada and watched her teenage granddaughter enter but when Margaret returned to picked Mekayla up - she wasn't there - and when she ventured into the school to see what had held her up, teachers tell her - Mekyala didn't attend any lessons that day.
Once reported as missing, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police start to piece together her whereabouts with 100 of hours worth of CCTV and manage to gain a good idea of where Mekayla had been and what she had been up too - including her last known whereabouts being at a bus depot....but....Mekayla never boarded a bus.
With the 10 year anniversary just passing, theories around Mekayla's case still remain - did she run away? was she trafficked? or did she met an individual online?
Whilst some of her known behaviour on the day of her disappearance can point a direction in each theory - none of them are proven to be correct and 10 years later the question still remains - What happened to Mekayla Bali?

It was the 28th December 1992 when 23 year old Steven Clark had a decision to make, go and watch the football with his father, Charles, or go for a walk with his mother, Doris.
Charles had been trying to help Steven understand money management and had told him if he wanted to go to the football, he'd have to pay for his own ticket - with that being said, Steven chose not to go to the Middlesborough vs Carlisle and instead went for a walk with Doris along Saltburn-By-The-Sea.
The walk took them around 40 minutes and as they approached the pier, Steven said he needed the toilet with Doris deciding to go too - Doris went into the ladies, and Steven went into the gents - this would be the last time Doris saw her son. Doris waited outside the toilets for a while, before assuming that Steven had carried on the walk alone - when she got home, he wasn't there.
Steven had been involved in an accident as a young child which left him with physical disabilities including a slower gait walk and distinctive limp. Due to this, there were some sightings of him on and around the day he disappeared.
In September 1999, the police received an anonymous letter - claiming that Steven was dead and who the killers were.
In 2020 - due to this letter, two people were arrested in connection to his murder.
However - his case still remains unsolved today.

On the 23rd January 2006, Jennifer Kesse returned to work following a vacation in the British Virgin Isle with her boyfriend, Rob. Her colleagues said she appeared her usual self, glowing from her recent trip.
On the 24th January - Jennifer didn't show up for work, made no call in to say she was sick or needing PTO. Due to how uncharacteristic this was for Jen, her boss called her Dad, who tried to call Jen - her phone went straight to voicemail. Her family jumped into their car to make the two hours trip from Tampa, FL to Orlando, FL - when they arrived, they found her new condo looking clean, tidy and like she had gotten up to get ready for work, with a wet towel in the bathroom and a selection of clothes on her bed, her car was also gone.
Knowing this wasn't like their daughter to just vanish, the Kesse's called Orlando Police Department and the search for missing Jennifer began.
Two days later, her car was found a mile away in an apartment complex parking lot and luckily, it was covered by CCTV - the police now had possession of the car being parked up AND the person walking away from the car...so why is it still unsolved? Well, despite having the surveillance, something happened which now Joyce Kesse states them to being "the luckiest criminal out there!"
Was it one of the construction workers Jen had told friends were odd, when they stopped and stared at her? Was it the ex boyfriend who miraculously had been drinking in a bar across the road from Jen's condo the night before her disappearance? Or is it someone we haven't considered yet?
We may soon find out, as in a development released this year, the Kesse's advised that AI is now being used in hopes of identifying the person caught on camera.

Levi Davis was starting to become a household name throughout the UK, he played professional Rugby, he had starred on the Celebrity X factor and he was leading the way within sports as being the first openly bisexual rugby player in the mens game.
But in October 2022, Levi's name was splashed across headlines, this time, for very different reasons - he had gone missing in Barcelona.
However, four days before his disappearance, he posted a 15 minute long Instagram video talking about how he was being blackmailed, drugged and put into compromising sexual positions - Levi spoke of police corruption and his money going to them - when you then add this to the timeline of events that happened prior to his disappearance, it makes you ask the question? Was Levi trying to warn us?
Over the years, investigations have taken place - but not so much by the Spanish police, who simply say there is no evidence of a crime. They didn't even post an appeal years later as there were no new lines of enquiry!
There's something about Levi's case that doesn't "feel" right - what do you think?

Sage Smith was just 19 when she vanished in November 2012, she had just started learning to become comfortable with herself having come out as Transgender. She was living with two friends, hosting parties and hoping to get into cosmetology.
On November 20th 2012, Sage left her apartment to go on a date in the early evening, but never arrived home. She had been spotted by her step sister at 6:30pm on the night of the date and was on the phone to someone, stating she would be with them in 5 minutes.
When her disappearance was reported, police gained a subpoena to access her phone - but her father, Dean, couldn't wait the couple of days until this approval and managed to guess Sage's password correctly. The last person she had spoken too had come from an out of state number, so Dean used the power of social media to find out - and it worked! He learnt that Sage had been talking to Erik McFadden - but like Sage, he had disappeared from the area too - only making contact with his girlfriend via email.
Thirteen years after Sage's disappearance, police finally caught up to Erik - but to this date, what has been discussed has not been disclosed - is he still the number 1 suspect in Sage's disappearance? Or do the other two theories make more sense?

On this weeks episode, I cover the case of Tamla Horsford, who attended an adults sleep over in 2018 to celebrate a friends birthday, but who was found dead in the backyard the following morning after falling from a 15ft balcony.
The case was deemed accidental and wasn't widely publicised, that is until 2020, when the death of George Floyd sparked the Black Live Matter protests and people began to share Tamla's case as they believed it hadn't been fully investigated - celebrities such as 50 Cent and Kim Kardashian signed and shared it, and suddenly, Tamla's case was widely discussed and scrutinised with many believing it was in fact a homicide.
A reinvestigation was carried out - no further answers have been given.
This episode uses AI - for a breakdown of the autopsy and the voice of R. Fernandes.

Rebecca Coriam was 24 and working onboard the Disney Wonder cruise line within the Youth Entertainment team, her bright, bubbly and always happy nature secured her the job with Disney.
On the 21st March 2011, the Disney Wonder set sail for it's Mexican Riveria cruise, the magic of the horns rang out "When You Wish Upon a Star" as the ship left the Port of Los Angeles, guests were queuing for a picture with Mickey Mouse, and the staff began their work to entertain adults and children aboard.
Rebecca Coriam had sent a Facebook message to her parents to say she would call them the following day, but that call never happened, because on 22nd March 2011, Rebecca vanished from the ship - the Captain claimed it be a rogue wave that swept Rebecca from Deck 5, others feel she may have jumped but friends and family strongly believe there to be a cover up. A pair of flip flops which were the main reason for the rogue wave idea, led to further questions being ask, but the main question was - Are Disney hiding something?

*WARNING* This episode discusses mental health, drug use and suicide.
Kurt Cobain, a name that many people will know and maybe you're one of the 36 million monthly listeners on Spotify of Nirvana.
Sadly, we've been left with three albums worth of music to listen to on a loop for 31 years because in April 1994, Kurt was found dead in his Seattle home. Police determined it to be a suicide, Kurt had taken a lot of Heroin and appeared to have shot himself - but for many years, this theory has been questioned, many people speculated as to whether he really did take his own life.
Last week, in February 2026 - news broke that a team of specialist forensics had re-looked into Kurt's case, and they believe the evidence strongly suggest her was in fact murdered.
In this weeks episode, we cover Kurt as a person, his life in the band, his death and these new theories.

This week, The Unsolved Podcast is giving you a three for one with the mini series of Gareth Williams.
Gareth William's was a highly intelligent 31 year old, who was working for MI6 in 2010.
In August 2010, following a call for concern, police visited Gareth's London flat, what they found would be the start of a story that to this day, is no closer to having a resolve, because in Gareth's bath was red holdall bag, that had been zipped shut and a padlocked. Inside the bag, was Gareth's naked body.
Very little DNA was found at the scene, there were no fingerprints on or inside the bag, despite the city facing a heatwave, the flats thermostat had been left on high. Some items in the flat that were found flooded the news which led the story on a different path.
There were three main theories for Gareth, we'll explore these plus other areas of Gareth's life, work and potential connections to similar deaths in the years before and after.
In the final episode, we tie in the links with Gareth's job and Russia, and the established 4th theory to come from the inquest. As well as looking at similar deaths around the timeframe that could be a connection.
