Hey there, hero!
Unless you count the awards shows and box office (unfairly) as some sort of barometer of our success (please donât), there really isnât any sort of leaderboard or all-star ladder for creatives.
Even best-seller lists only judge whatâs selling well, not whatâs the highest artistic quality.
Itâs not a race, right? We tell ourselves (and I tell you from time to time) itâs not a competition. Weâre all pulling in the same direction, and helping each other.
And yet, we look at our peers sometimes, and let our brains ponder how they are âahead of usâ or âgaining groundâ or ânot as goodâ or âso much betterâ...and for what?
Itâs a false equivalency to be âin competitionâ for a booking or a commission or even moving forward in the casting process.
We canât even define what a win is.
So, why not just let go of that, and pursue our joy. Have fun. Create to just create.

The story of life is filled with dependencies, with our journey being affected by the challenges in our lives.
And when we think about how our situation might be better if we werenât this or that or the other thing (the grass is always greener, isnât it?), we can make arbitrary assumptions about how our challenges are soâŠchallenging.
And we need to remember that we get to choose to have these challenges (or not), and ya kinda have to live with your choices.
Thereâs no sense in shaking your fist at how unfair the challenges are in our lives, when at any time we made these choices for a reason, and these challenges ensueâŠ
âŠbut that we can choose to go down another path at any time, and choose a new set of challenges.

Characters. That word can strike fear in the hearts of narrators that feel that fiction is a whole ânother level of effort when it comes to audiobooks.
Same thing when the content involves accents or dialects.
Itâs not necessarily true that non-fiction is easier (you might take on some scientific terms or geographic locations to see why).
But characters donât have to be intimidating, and accents and dialects donât have to be debilitating.
I have a go-to simple approach, one that narrators of any level can put to use, to make characters and accents and dialects easier. And maybe even fun!

If youâre a professional, acting can take all kinds of forms.
TV. Film. Stage. Commercials. Digital. VO. Audiobooks. And so much more.
But the rarity of on-camera work is even more pronounced now than it has been in the past.
The numbers are very different in some categories than in others. Like, say, audiobooks.
Lots more opportunity than in any mainstream on-camera work.
But the numbers are, even in audiobooks, nuanced by your engagement and your acting ability and your mad skills in showing that off.
If where you engage your acting skills are at least the same level of engagement you place your technical skills, youâre going to move the needle in your favor.
Itâs a reminder and a significant difference.

So you have an audiobook to narrate. Compared to a lot of other acting jobs, itâs a much bigger job - sometimes exponentially larger.
And itâs such a big event that it causes us to sometimes assign an outsized scope of the undertaking, and misplace whatâs important for success.
Yes, you have a lot of tech and process details to deal with.
But you also have to do the acting part.
Creating characters in audiobooks (and that includes the neutral narrator) means giving them the same due as you will with the characters you get to create on camera or on stage or in commercials.
You hear it in the work of the narrators (actors) we all revere.

There is a difference between the capability of doing somethingâŠand the actual execution/achievement of that something.
It's a subtle distinction.
Sometimes we doubt that we are capable of something.
Actually achieving whatever that something is may require some additional skills.
ButâŠthe doubt that creeps into our minds about whether or not weâre capable of doing it - if we have the capacity and ability to pursue it.
You do.
Are there any guarantees that you will get it? No. But that doesnât mean youâre not capable.

I often encourage you to embrace failure: we learn from it, we get better because of it and we identify those things that help us do less of what doesn't work.
And that means you can achieve success through failure.

Just like many research projects end up determining...it depends.
It depends where you are in your journey of learning and mastery. And it turns out that you learn a lot more from failure early in your journey, and less as you gain mastery.

Most of the decisions that are made in the professional world revolve around money, and they are never on schedule.

Much of what happens is random, unpredictable and not based in the arts, but rather in the commerce.
And you need to be OK with that.
I hope that money isn't looked at as a bad thing, either from the funding of projects so you can get work, or from you getting paid to do those things.

Ever since we've been humans, from the very beginning of time, we've tried to make sense of the world around us.
And among the hardest things to make sense of is the creative arts...and the choice to become a creative artist. The randomness alone is mind-boggling.
If you try to make sense of it, you'll fail. Especially if you try logic.
That works for other lines of work, but not ours.

We are privileged to work in this business. No doubt.

We signed up for a future that required we be adaptive to the things that might happen in the course of creating something awesome. Stuff happens. Things can get messy.
