  • Welcome to The WorshipWorkshop Podcast, where we help you grow a stronger team that leads engaging worship.

    An Interview with Jay Kim

Back in January, when few of us ever dreamed that COVID-19 would shut down our church buildings, I recorded this conversation pastor and author, Jay Kim, about his book, Analog Church: Why We Need Real People, Places, and Things in the Digital Age.

In this book, and during this conversation, Jay sheds light on how technology and the pursuit of relevance is damaging the church.

However, this book and this episode are releasing in March of 2020, when all we have is "digital church" when it comes to gathering for worship.

Don't think for a moment that this discredits what Jay is saying. I believe our current situation will amplify his message that digital is and will never be enough. Technology is a tool, and in many ways, a powerful tool. But it can't be a substitute for gathering, participating, and communing together.

Be sure to listen to the end of the interview, because Jay recorded additional thoughts about Analog Church and the times that we're living in.

We're continuing our exploration of how to use the ancient fourfold pattern of worship in a modern church setting. If you haven’t listened to Part 1 yet (Episode 16), go back and listen to that first.

    www.WorshipWorkshop.com/17

This episode is part two of that conversation with worship leader, teacher, and theologian Rob Still. Even if you are in a modern church setting, don’t dismiss this idea of the fourfold pattern of worship. It’s not just a liturgical thing or just a traditional thing. It can bring a more meaningful journey to your worship services.

In part 2 of this interview, we talk practically about the second two movements of the fourfold pattern and how to include this model in different settings. About Rob Still Rob is worship leader, songwriter, author, and instructor in Nashville, TN.

He is also one of the instructors inside of Worship Workshop. You can connect with Rob at RobStill.com

We’re diving into the practical application of something that Dr. Lester Ruth introduced us to in episode 13, which is the ancient fourfold order of worship. Lester gave us some fantastic ideas to implement that order of worship.

But I wanted to dig even deeper, so I asked worship leader, teacher, and theologian Rob Still to help us apply the fourfold pattern of worship into our modern worship settings. Even if you are in a modern church setting, don’t dismiss this idea of the fourfold pattern of worship. It’s not just a liturgical thing or just a traditional thing. It can bring a more meaningful journey to your worship services.

In part 1 of this interview, we lay the groundwork for understanding how the fourfold pattern of worship fits, and then talk practically about the first two movements. In part 2, we discuss the second two patterns and talk about how to include this model in different settings.

Today we are talking about songwriting for the church, and we have an amazing guest to teach and inspire us. This season, we have focused on how to engage your congregation—and we’ve hit this theme from a lot different angles and topics.

Today, we’re continuing that theme, but now centering it around writing original songs that will engage your congregation. So to do that, I got the privilege to do a fantastic interview with a master songwriter who has a heart to create new songs for the church to sing.

She’s won a Dove Award for song of the year, has written songs sung by a whole list of artists and worship leaders that you know, and she is actively mentoring and building up local church songwriters.

In this episode, Peter Neumann, one of our trainers, and I continue with our season-long theme about how to engage your church.

Today, we dig into how we manage our song lists and rotate our songs. I know—it sounds kinda boring. But how you choose and rotate songs could mean the difference between a church that barely engages in worship and a church that sings from the heart each week.

  • Welcome to the WorshipWorkshop Podcast where we help you grow a stronger team that leads engaging worship. This season, our over-arching theme is "engaging your congregation in worship.”

Today, we’re digging into the tension between performance and worship. To do that, I have a conversation with veteran worship leader (and cover band frontman and actor) Bill Mozingo to discuss the tensions between performance and worship.

It’d be really simple to say "it should all be worship.” But anyone who’s stepped foot on a platform—from musician to preaching pastor to announcement-giver—knows that there’s an engagement that needs to happen with the people who are gathered. Inherently, there’s a performative aspect to what the platform team does, and, to a larger degree, the production/AVL team.

So Bill and I talk about that tension today and hopefully give you some practical ways to navigate that with your team.

Bill Mozingo has been a professional musician for more than 20 years and has been involved in producing and writing several praise and worship albums. Since 2006 he has been a member of Wave Church creative team in Va. Beach, VA. For six of those years, he was worship pastor and involved in writing, directing and acting in numerous plays and musical productions. He and his wife Darrah have four active boys and live in Va. Beach. In his spare time, Bill enjoys playing golf and basketball, and being the front man for an 80’s and 90’s music cover band.

This season on the podcast, our focus is on what it takes to engage your congregation in worship. One of the biggest barriers we all face to people engaging worship in our gatherings is our focus on ourselves.

Today, we’re talking with a worship leader who journeyed away from consumer-oriented worship with his church. Enjoy my conversation Manuel Luz.

    About Manuel:

Songwriter, author, inventor, arts advocate, and pastor—Manuel Luz is passionate about worship, coffee, the Oakland Raiders, and the intersections of faith and the arts. Manuel’s book, Imagine That: Discovering Your Unique Role as a Christian Artist (Moody Publishers) is a practical and personal theology of the arts.

His current book, Honest Worship: From False Self to True Praise (InterVarsity Press), released in Fall 2018, addresses the critical intersections between spiritual formation and worship. He is also the inventor of the patented musical instrument, the WalkaBoutℱ, which recently won Best of Show at the world-renowned NAMM Show earlier this year. • Welcome to the Worship Workshop Podcast where we help you grow a stronger team that leads engaging worship.

In today’s episode, we’re looking at the common things that keeps our churches from singing. As worship leaders and team members, we can’t make someone sing out and worship. We're just there trying to create an environment that encourages people to participate in this musical worship that we lead.

But here’s the problem: since we’re able to encourage participation, it stands to reason that we can also discourage it. So here are the six mistakes that we make that might be keeping our church from singing.

    1. You have "Stand Zombies"

    2. Your songs are too high.

    3. Your songs are too complicated.

    4. You have too many new or unfamiliar songs.

    5. Worship sets are too long.

    6. The music volume is too loud or too soft.

  • In this episode we’re talking about leadership—specifically the six worship leadership roles that your ministry needs.

If you listened to Episode #1, which was the overview of the Healthy Ministry Framework, you’ll remember that there were three big elements of that framework that really were an equation:

    Engaged Team Members +
    Effective System x
    Equipped Leaders =
    Healthy Worship Ministry

So this episode is focused on what leadership looks like within the Worship Ministry. I’m talking to Robin Walters, who’s part of our team here at WorshipTeamCoach.com and WorshipWorkshop.com.

For the first part of the conversation we’re going to dig into her journey from a choir member (with some attitude) to actually leading that entire worship ministry. And she’s not is not a small church: She’s in a church of about 4000 people. It’s quite a story, and as you listen, you will hear some fantastic leadership principles being discussed.

And then, in the second half of our conversation, but we dig specifically into the six crucial worship leadership roles that every worship ministry needs.

  • In today’s episode, Jon talks with Aaron Niequist about his book The Eternal Current.

Aaron Niequist is a liturgist, writer, and pastor currently living in NYC. After leading worship at Mars Hill Church (Grand Rapids, MI) and Willow Creek Church (Barrington, IL), he created A New Liturgy and a discipleship-focused, formational, ecumenical, practice-based community at Willow Creek called The Practice. Aaron recently released a book about a practice-based faith called The Eternal Current: How a Practice-Based Faith Can Save Us from Drowning, and continues to create resources to help us flesh it out.

  • In this first episode, we’re talking about The Healthy Ministry Framework. We’ll be spending much of this season talking about the three elements of a Healthy Ministry Framework.

Today’s episode is an overview of it and why it’s so critical for your ministry. To explore the Framework more deeply, we focus on nine false beliefs that keep leaders from implementing a Healthy Ministry Framework.
