  • Today's Therapy Chat guest is Dr. Peter Levine, the developer of Somatic Experiencing, who speaks about his journey as a wounded healer. He shares that by being open about our experiences healing, our authenticity allows others to know they're not alone. None of us in the helping professions have been immune to suffering, it's a part of the universal experience of being human; and there's no shame in having experienced trauma, no matter who you are. In our conversation, Dr. Levine shares about how he developed Somatic Experiencing, and the surprising muse he found during that process. He discusses his violent childhood growing up in a family which was under threat by the mafia, and how Somatic Experiencing approaches healing from trauma "stuck" in the body.

  • Welcome back to Therapy Chat! Betrayal comes in many forms. One of the most common ways we think of it is when a partner has a hidden life or a side relationship they're keeping secret from their partner. We talked about various forms of betrayal trauma, how attachment factors in, and what the healing process can look like. LaDonna Carey trains therapists to support survivors of betrayal trauma. She talks about her upcoming training at the Aloha Summit in Maui, discusses upcoming events and training, the contribution to rebuilding Maui, which is focused on healing and restoring the therapist community after a betrayal amidst our community which impacted hundreds of therapists and coaches - including both of us - both financially and emotionally.

  • Welcome back to Therapy Chat! If you've ever thought, "I know I need to set a boundary, but I don't know how to do it," or "I know what I should do/say, but why can't I seem to make myself do it?" then you'll love this episode. This week's guest, Juliane Taylor Shore, wrote the book, "Setting Boundaries That Stick: How Neurobiology Can Help You Rewire Your Brain to Help You Feel Safe, Connected and Empowered," which addresses the challenge of setting boundaries, which so many of us find confusing these days. In our conversation you'll hear Jules explain what the different types of boundaries are, how to set them and what's needed to make them stick. Jules is one of the speakers at this year's Psychotherapy Networker! Are you going? Save $50 using the link in the Show Notes!

Juliane Taylor Shore, LMFT, LPC, SEP, is a therapist, author, and teacher who is creating spaces where people can move into more self-compassion, self-trust, empowerment, and integrity. She regularly teaches and speaks to people from all around the world and translates new understandings in neurobiology into practices that can support brain change. She came into the therapy world as a client who argued that feelings didn’t matter only to find herself all these years later having followed neuroscience to the obvious conclusion: we are really feeling and meaning making beings driven by our interdependence. She believes that embracing that reality is key to finding purpose and deep joy. She is the author of Setting Boundaries that Stick: How Neurobiology Can Help You Rewire Your Brain to Feel Safe, Connected and Empowered. She is an associate Instructor with the Coherence Institute and a core faculty member with Therapy Wisdom and Jules co-hosts Why Does My Partner...? Podcast with Rebecca Wong and Vickey Easa.

  • Welcome back to Therapy Chat! In this episode, the last for now in the series on women's wellness in midlife, I spoke with Dr. Erin Kinney, a naturopathic doctor in Annapolis Maryland, to discuss the connection between chronic stress and women's wellness. Dr. Kinney explained the impact of chronic stress - like developmental/childhood trauma - on our endocrine systems, affecting our hormones. I talked a bit about how this happened in my life and created a health crisis for me just around the time that Therapy Chat was born, interestingly! Erin explains that Cortisol, which we usually think of as the "stress hormone," is also responsible for our energy levels, and how we can change our relationship to cortisol by making simple lifestyle changes. Dr. Kinney explains these complex processes clearly, making this information easier for listeners to understand.

I also shared exciting news about the upcoming Psychotherapy Networker Symposium, where I'll be live podcasting and interviewing speakers, in partnership with PESI. It's not too late to register for the Networker, there's a link in the show notes to save $50 on your registration - and these interviews will be available for everyone, whether attending or not. Join my e-mail list and follow Therapy Chat on social media to keep up with the details!

    About today's guest:

Dr. Kinney is a Naturopathic Doctor, speaker, author and podcast host who helps stressed out patients improve their mood, balance their hormones and increase their energy. She is incredibly passionate about teaching her patients to understand WHY stress causes so many problems in the body and HOW they can change their response to stress so they can take back control in both their bodies and their lives. Dr. Kinney currently runs a private practice in Annapolis, Maryland where she specializes in treating patients with chronic health conditions related to hormonal and nervous system imbalances. In addition to her practice, she offers workshops, retreats and online programs.

  • Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week we're talking about a topic that has been relatively taboo until recently - but affects everyone with a uterus in some way. Welcome to a series on menopause! My guest today is Dr. Nazanin Moali, an internationally-recognized AASECT certified psychologist, educator, and host of Sexology Podcast. We talked about the impact of menopause on mental health and Nazanin shared from the sex therapist perspective.

We discussed the hormonal, mood and libido-related symptoms of menopause. This episode is important for every therapist to listen to and reflect on our level of comfort around speaking with clients about sex and menopause.

    Takeaways

Menopause can have a significant impact on mental health and sexual well-being.It is important for therapists to create a safe space for clients to discuss menopause and its effects.Expanding the definition of sex and exploring different sexual experiences can help individuals navigate changes during menopause.Therapists should convey their openness to discussing menopause and sexual health to help clients feel comfortable bringing up these topics.

  • This week's episode includes a conversation with Jenn Fredette. We talked about how marketing doesn't have to be gross and make you feel ashamed of who you are. We discuss the role of attachment style in marketing and how therapists can show up authentically in their marketing efforts.

We also explore the evolution of therapist influencers and the pressure to conform to certain marketing strategies. Jen emphasizes the importance of niching down and writing specifically to your ideal client. Overall, the conversation highlights the need for attuned marketing that reflects the therapist's true self and resonates with their ideal clients. Sound familiar? As you'll hear in an upcoming episode, I've been receiving an auditory listening program that has been healing my attachment system from the bottom up. I can attest to how differently I'm able to express myself in my marketing as a result! Jenn shares a lot of knowledge and wisdom in this conversation. I'm going back to listen again and take more notes! Here's more of what Jen shared.

Marketing can be authentic and grounded in who you are as a therapist.Therapists should consider their attachment style and how it influences their marketing approach. The pressure to conform to certain marketing strategies, such as becoming an influencer, may not be necessary or effective for all therapists.Niching down and writing specifically to your ideal client can help attract the right clients and create a sense of attunement in your marketing.

  • Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week I'm thrilled to bring you the last interview Linda Thai, LMSW, RYT-200, CLYL and I did in 2023. The previous three episodes with Linda were focused on my grief journey, and this one is different - though trauma, attachment and grief are woven in, of course. Linda teaches us about Psychodrama Structures, which is a method she has benefited from and uses to bring healing to many people.

In our conversation we explore themes of healing when one's Family of Origin was unable to meet our needs. I'm so excited to be heading to San Francisco, CA in February to witness one of Linda's Psychodrama Structures retreats in February 2024. I feel honored to be able to assist my friend and teacher and I'm sure I'll have much to share after experiencing that! Visit Linda's website at the links below to learn how you can participate in one of these experiences, if you're interested.

Linda Thai describes herself as a somatic and trauma therapist, a freelance educator, public speaker and storyteller, group facilitator, collaborator, infiltrator, cross-pollinator, community-builder, agent of change, a former child refugee and a happy human being. You'll feel all of that and more come through in this beautiful conversation.

  • Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week we have a returning guest, Brooke Randolph, LPC, LMHC, LPCC-S, an adoptive parent, therapist and advocate for the members of the adoption constellation, who is also the author of several books and a Brainspotting trainer. This conversation explores the complex and often overlooked aspects of adoption, focusing on the experiences of adoptees, adoptive parents, and birth parents. I talk about my journey of learning about adoption as a therapist, and we talk about the need for a deeper understanding of the subject. The conversation delves into the challenges faced by adoptees and the impact of adoption on identity and mental health. It also highlights the role of colonization, patriarchy, classism, and racism in the Western adoption system. The episode emphasizes the importance for therapists to educate themselves about adoption to better support their clients. Resources and related episodes are provided for further exploration. Here's some of what we covered:

Adoption is a complex topic that requires a deeper understanding and exploration of its various aspects.Adoptees often face unique challenges, including higher rates of suicide and the conflicting feelings about searching for their birth parents. The experiences and perspectives of adoptive parents and birth parents can differ significantly, leading to confusion and distress for adoptees.Colonization, patriarchy, classism, and racism play a role in the Western adoption system and should be considered when discussing adoption.

  • Welcome back to Therapy Chat! In this first episode of 2024 I'm so happy to bring you this interview recorded this past Fall, with Dr. Mariel Buqué, author of the new book, Break the Cycle: A Guide to Healing Intergenerational Trauma. We discussed intergenerational patterns of trauma, legacy burdens that were carried by our ancestors and are held in our bodies, showing up as patterns of tension, pain and illness.

Tune in to our conversation and learn how you can break the cycles of those who came before you and make things better for the generations that follow you through time.

Dr. Mariel Buqué is an Afro-Dominican psychologist. She received her doctorate in counseling psychology from Columbia University, where she also trained as a fellow in holistic mental health. She is a world-renowned intergenerational trauma expert and the author of the book Break the Cycle: A Guide to Healing Intergenerational Trauma. • Welcome back to Therapy Chat! As 2023 comes to an end I wanted to reflect upon the year and what I learned through my experiences. Life always includes highs and lows, light and darkness. This year in my personal and professional life (so basically my whole life), there was more darkness than light. Yet upon reflection, there were so many glimmers of light within the dark times. In this episode I share my personal journey dealing with grief and loss in my personal life and how it made it difficult to keep going in my businesses.

I carried a heavy burden of shame and self-blame - things just kept getting worse and worse, and I wondered how I’d be able to bear it. And things slowly, gradually, turned around, and are getting better day by day. I shared some plans for the coming year, including training in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and EMDR. Thank you to all of you who listen and support Therapy Chat. My hope in sharing more of my personal experience over the last year is to provide encouragement to any listeners who may need a reminder to keep going, even when you feel like there is no hope. Sometimes when everything seems really dark you can't see a way out, and eventually, a way appears if you just keep moving forward the best you can.

  • Welcome back to Therapy Chat. This week I interviewed author, EMDR-Certified therapist and Consultant In Training Marcken Volmy, LMHC about how EMDR can help with betrayal trauma and the impact of broken trust. We explored how betrayal by trusted figures and institutions can shatter one's sense of safety and trust in the world.

We also discussed recent examples of betrayal within the mental health field, for example, the FTC settlement with BetterHelp, and other situations in our field which have affected both of us. We talked about the impact these experiences can have on therapists' and clients' trust in the systems and processes of our profession. Marcken explains how EMDR can help change implicit beliefs about self and the world, leading to healing and a felt sense of safety. We also touch on the current political climate and its effect on trust and safety. Marcken's book, Trauma Stories, is available now! Listen in to this hopeful conversation. It's never too late to heal.

Marcken Volmy is a licensed mental health counselor and the owner of Bedrock Counseling, a private practice based in Florida that also offers EMDR consultation for recently trained clinicians. He is an EMDR trained and certified therapist with over a decade’s worth of experience helping people identify their traumas and gaining more awareness in how to process unresolved issues. Marcken is the author of Trauma Stories: Discovering Strength Through Our Vulnerabilities. Marcken has worked with special needs children, overwhelmed adults, community mental health, mobile crisis unit, children in group homes, non-profit mental health, and substance abuse. Marcken is passionate about all things mental health and trauma related and enjoys adding value to people’s lives one story at a time. Marcken lives in Florida with his wife and family.

  • Welcome back to Therapy Chat! We all know people who'll do anything for others but never accept help for themselves. In fact, they never admit needing any help, despite being very attuned to how everyone around them is doing. These relationships feel out of balance, and limit both partners' ability to show up authentically. This is true in intimate partner relationships, friendships, work relationships and family relationships. This week host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C interviews Michelle Farris, LMFT about codependent relational dynamics. Michelle describes the dynamics of codependency within relationships, talks about how these patterns develop and how people who lose themselves within relationships can build a stronger sense of self.

Michelle Farris is a licensed psychotherapist and anger management specialist. She helps others build healthy relationships without sacrificing themselves while using her own recovery to provide hope for creating a happier life. She has written three e-books and has created several online courses to support private learning. Her articles have been featured in several online publications including Psych Central, Bustle, Your Tango, The Good Men Project and The Daily Positive. In her private practice Michelle found her sweet spot in teaching relationship skills that are easy to implement quickly.

  • Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week I'm honored to bring you another interview on the subject of religious trauma. My guest today is Dr. Mark G. Karris, a Marriage and Family Therapist in California who is the author of four books, including most recently, "The Diabolical Trinity: Healing Religious Trauma from a Wrathful God, Tormenting Hell, and a Sinful Self." He describes why he wrote this book, and how religious beliefs with these three components can be traumatic.

  • Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week, we are talking about a topic we haven't covered before because I didn't know people were doing it! This week's guests are Ann Beckley Forest and Annie Monaco, two EMDR therapists who together make up Playful EMDR! Ann and Annie talk about how they use EMDR in combination with play therapy with children who have experienced disrupted attachment relationships and trauma. As always, I had many questions and they answered them all. If you found Robyn Gobbel's episode interesting a couple months ago, here is another take on working with the same population of children in therapy. I hope this will inspire you to think outside the box about working with traumatized children.
