Hello!
This week, we have back on our World Cup and War Correspondent Patrick Hultgren to talk about sportswashing, why the USMNT hasn’t traditionally captured the public’s imagination, at least when compared to the women’s team, youth soccer in America and what Landon Donovan said, and the politics of patriotism about a sport we claim we don’t care about all that much in the States.

Hello!
Today, we talk about A.I. (again) but mostly about what we feel might be lost in a future where everyone is writing A.I. papers and turning in A.I. work and emailing each other in friendly A.I.- ese. Is it a new problem or is it just a breaking point of a digital life where so much of our human interactions have been farmed out to one robot or another? And Jay talks about his fake writer AI game he made, which you should definitely try out!

Hello!
Today we’re talking about the controversy over at Granta, who published a story from the winner of the Commonwealth Prize that appears, at least right now, to be written by AI. We talk about why this is kinda funny but also obviously distressing and whether writers should be experimenting with AI. We also talk about Thomas Massie’s election loss last night and the new crop of short form video that’s been coming out of the Washington Post and why it’s probably worse than AI slop.

This week we have a fun, off-beat episode for you about fishing. Why does Tyler put on a wetsuit and go float around in rip currents to find some rock to squat on and fish? What are ethics of this sport? What land use issues effect it? Why is the future hope of the Democratic Party all these new Gen-Z Birders? We talk about all this with our guest Jerry Audet, the managing editor of the fishing magazine Surfcaster’s Journal and the co-host of the Surfcast Podcast. His writing and photography has appeared in just about every fishing publication you can name. And he is the author of Hooked, an anthology of fresh and saltwater gamefish. Most importantly he is one of the best surf fisherman in the country.

Hello! Today we have on Noam Scheiber of the New York Times to talk about his new book, Mutiny: The Rise of Revolt of the College-Educated Working Class. We talk about the rise of unions at Starbucks, Amazon, Hollywood, and in digital newsrooms and what to make of this post-Bernie flood of left politics that feels both extremely present now as evidenced by the election of Zohran and also something that can now be dissected and discussed. Really good episode and very good book that we highly recommend!

Today, we have on a guest we’re very excited about: Molly Crabapple who has a new book coming out called Here Where We Live is Our Country: The Story of the Jewish Bund. We talk about the years she put into this book, which required her to learn Yiddish and travel the world, the realities of identity, what lessons the Bund has for today, and then we talk about Molly’s fight against AI, which has been stealing her illustrations for years. One of the best episodes we’ve done in a while so I hope you’ll take a listen!

Hello!
Today, we have on Jonathan Shainin, one of the founders of Equator Magazine, a new venture among very smart, thoughtful writers and editors that “is our collective response to a crisis that is as much spiritual and intellectual as it is political and economic. It is a venture that aims to create a more cosmopolitan home for thought and art than the one assigned to them by provincial Western periodicals. It also seeks to restore dignity to the concept of truth, and create a public space where the values of justice, solidarity and compassion can flourish.”
We talk about starting a new magazine in this media atmosphere, the need for an international perspective on the world, who their ideal reader might be, and why they still believe in the printed word. A very stirring episode and I hope you’ll take a listen.
