On March 30, 1952 four men were executed in Athens, Greece. They were accused of being communists and committing acts of espionage and treason. Three years later, the daughters of one of these men were put on a plane and sent to America. They were adopted by a wealthy Greek American couple in Massachusetts. Their adoption was the first of a long line of adoptions between Greece and the US that has been kept a secret for years. It is a story that takes us back to the Cold War years and to a relationship of dominance and submission between the US and Greece. But it’s also a personal story, about facing one’s past — decades after being forced to forget. Can a broken family come together again?

Au 17e siècle, les Habsbourg possédaient déjà ici un château d’agrément qui fut toutefois détruit en 1683 lors du deuxième siège de Vienne par les Turcs. Après la victoire sur les Ottomans, l’empereur Léopold Ier chargea alors le maître du baroque, l’architecte autrichien Fischer von Erlach, d’ériger un pavillon de chasse sur les ruines du château détruit. Un demi-siècle plus tard, Marie-Thérèse fit transformer Schönbrunn dans le style rococo par Nicolas Pacassi, architecte de la Cour et en fit sa résidence d’été officielle. C’est ici que Marie-Thérèse passait les mois d’été avec sa Cour qui, toujours est-il, ne comptait pas moins de 1500 personnes. La famille impériale contribua activement à l’aménagement intérieur du château qui témoigne aujourd’hui encore de la vie quotidienne des Habsbourg, de leurs habitudes et de l’histoire de Schönbrunn, restée bien vivante. Les successeurs de Marie-Thérèse ont, eux aussi, laissé des traces, surtout l’arrière arrière-petit-fils de Marie-Thérèse, l’empereur François-Joseph, qui naquit ici au château et y mourut en 1916, après 68 ans de règne. Quand vous serez au premier étage, prenez à droite et pénétrez dans la salle au parquet à chevrons. En regardant par la fenêtre à votre gauche, vous apercevez la grande cour impériale qui fait partie de « Schloss Schönbrunn Experience ». Ce musée pour enfants offre au visiteur l’occasion d’expérimenter et d’apprendre une foule de choses sur la vie à la Cour impériale. Par la porte ouverte, vous pouvez jeter un coup d’oeil dans la chambre de l’aide de camp, dont la mission principale consistait à transmettre immédiatement à l’empereur toute information militaire. C’est sans doute pour cette raison qu’il logeait à proximité du monarque.
