  • Today is Sunday May 12, 2024 and every year in the US the second Sunday of May is Mothers Day. On this bonus episode I asked people two questions 1) what makes their moms amazing and remarkable and 2) what are some of the biggest lessons you learned from her? These are their answers.

  • ELIZABETH’S BIO

NOTE| This episode is longer than usual→ ‘Top Of The Game (in) Overtime’ shows are released occasionally

In between immigrating from Ethiopia to America as a three-month old to running one of the largest healthcare systems in the country, a lot happens. In Dr. Wako’s case: she was a nurse who became a doctor who ended up being chief medical officer of a hospital campus, then running two as chief executive, and is now CEO & President of an entire system, Swedish Providence. If that is not enough, somehow while working full time as a doctor and hospital administrator and being a mom to four young children, she obtained an MBA. She is remarkably at the top of her game.

As of the end of 2023, Swedish encompasses five hospital campuses, over 200 primary care and specialty clinics, 3700 physicians, 231,440 ER visits, just under 1 million outpatient visits, and almost $3 billion in revenue. With a career spanning three decades, Dr. Wako’s path in medicine began at the bedside, as a registered nurse caring for psychiatric patients. Seeking a broader role on the care team, she went on to medical school in Utah and then to the University of Washington where she completed a residency in anesthesiology and a fellowship in perioperative medicine. Her past roles include chief medical officer and chief operating officer for Swedish’s First Hill campus, and chief executive officer for Swedish’s First Hill and Cherry Hill campuses.

Elizabeth holds an associates of arts (AA) in nursing from Walla Walla Community College, a BS from University of Washington, an MD from University of Utah, and an Executive MBA at the University of Washington. She is as accomplished as she is quintessentially human and we can all learn from her, I certainly have. We talk about healthcare, science, communities, AI, capital investment, biases, what drives her, and the future of care in the United States.

  • FRED’S BIO

Fred Rivera is as accomplished as he is a terrific human being and has had a remarkable career. He is one of the highest ranking (and few) Latinos in the business of American professional sports. He currently serves as Executive Vice President and General Counsel for the Seattle Mariners, loves the game, started pitching as a young kid (great curveball), played in college, and deeply knows the economics of sports - and their positive impact on communities across America. We talk about school, multi generational influences, LA Law (the show), community fabric, leadership, and of course, emotional connections to baseball.

His Mariners role was preceded by another big role: Fred served as Managing Partner of Perkins Coie’s Seattle office, one of the largest and most prestigious law firms in the United States where he spent about two decades. He started his career in the 1990’s as a trial attorney in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice and in the early 2000’s he served as Vice President in charge of internal investigations at Fannie Mae.

He serves on the boards of directors of Heritage Bank (NASDAQ: HFWA), Delta Dental of Washington and OAC Services, and ROOT Sports, the Mariners-owned regional sports network. He has been recognized in the U.S. News-Best Lawyers in America and as Director of the Year (2022) by the Puget Sound Business Journal. Fred also serves, or has served, as President of the Latina/o Bar Association of Washington, Regional President of the Hispanic National Bar Association and the boards of Rainier Scholars, Trustee of the King County Bar Association, Board of Directors of the Downtown Seattle Association, ArtsFund, and the United Way of King County, where he was Chairman.

  • TED’S BIO

If you start doing something at the age of 2, you may get pretty good at it and such is the case with Ted and skiing. A true pioneer with a distinctive, unparalleled, lightning-fast and highly aggressive carving style he perfected playing around with his childhood friends in Park City, where he grew up. Still in his 30’s, Ted retired from skiing a few years ago and is by far one of the best alpine ski racers in the world. He is also a serial entrepreneur having founded Shred Optics (an outdoor winter gear company) and currently as a shareholder of Carv (a hardware/software enabled digital ski coach). His childhood nickname and to this day is “shred” - and he hardcore “carv(es)”.

Ted is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, winning the combined in 2006 (Turin, Italy) and the giant slalom in 2014 (Sochi, Russia), and is a five-time World-Cup champion in giant slalom. He finished his career with 25 victories and 52 podiums in competition. His record puts him among the three greatest giant slalom skiers of all time. His full record and stats here.

He is a household name in the world of winter sports and a life-long skier and ambassador for the sport who is currently an NBC analyst, brand ambassador, content creator, public speaker and business owner. Some of the brands he is or has been affiliated with include Land Rover, Apple, Deer Valley, and GoPro and as his own website puts it: “He's comfortable connecting with people on the slopes and in the boardroom, for Fortune 500 companies… his Olympic and entrepreneurial experiences, as well as his journey of going from a kid at the bottom of the rankings to one of the best skiers in the world, captivate all audiences.”

    BRAD’S BIO

Brad Gerstner is a serial entrepreneur, venture capitalist and hedge fund manager. He is founder, chairman and CEO of Altimeter Capital, a leading technology investment firm he started during the 2008 financial crisis. Brad and his team are known for fundamental analysis and deep expertise in consumer internet, software and artificial intelligence across the capital formation cycle, a style colloquially known as crossover investing.

The efficient and productive use of capital “knows no buckets”, and Brad is at the forefront of these crossover opportunities across the private, quasi-public and public markets. He has been involved in over 100 IPOs and some of his notable investments include Snowflake, Bytedance (TikTok) Zillow, Uber, Meta (Facebook), Plaid, Okta, Gusto and Zillow among many others.

Brad was born and raised in Indiana and his father’s failed business taught him many lessons early in life. “In life you are either running towards something or away from something” as he puts it. His investing career started while day trading to pay for law school at Indiana University, followed by being appointed to be Deputy Secretary of State of Indiana, the youngest in history. His true calling was in business and attended Harvard to obtain an MBA. Right after graduation he was a founding principal of General Catalyst and worked / co-founded / sold several travel and consumer internet related startups, followed by serving as a portfolio manager at PAR Capital and eventually launching Altimeter.

In 2016, Altimeter was the largest shareholder of United and helped usher changes at the company, including its board. In 2022, Gerstner wrote a now seminal open letter to Mark Zuckerberg stating Meta was losing focus, had too many employees and was losing investor confidence recommending that the company cut expenses by 20%, focus on AI and limit Metaverse spending to $5 billion a year. A few weeks later, Meta effected many of his recommendations and the company’s stock has increased ~4X since.

He has been a regular guest on the All In Podcast and has a podcast (BG2) with co-host and former Benchmark GP Bill Gurley. Brad recently unveiled Invest America, a plan to create a broad and passive basket of stocks representing the American economy for every child in America rooted in the power of capitalism, compound interest and returns. Brad is at the top of his game and his influence is hard to overstate, underpinned by his intellect, vision, capital allocation savvy, curiosity and belief in opportunity for all – no matter where one starts.

I’ve known Brad for 25 years, is a great friend and every time we speak I learn a few things, including this episode - enjoy this remarkable human being.

  • TOM’S BIO

One week ago, Thomas Monahan was announced as the new CEO of Heidrick & Struggles International, Inc. (NASDAQ: HSII), one of the preeminent global executive search, leadership development, and management consulting firms. Previously, Tom served as CEO and President of DeVry University until Oct 2023 and remains the organization's Vice Chairman. Prior to that, he served as Chief Executive Officer of Corporate Executive Board (NYSE: CEB), now Gartner, which acquired CEB for $2.6 billion. He also served as Chairman of ProKarma and is currently a board member of Transunion (NYSE: TRU). Early in his career he was a consultant at Deloitte and Andersen Consulting. Tom’s career has been spent engaging, leading and governing organizations that leverage innovative technology, robust data, and exceptional people to inflect business performance, improve individual lives, and produce healthy and just societies. He is also Managing Partner of Norton Street and served on the boards of Winsight, Workforce Logiq, Convergys.

I had the pleasure of serving with Tom on the Board of Trustees of The Nature Conservancy and is a good friend. He is, by far, one of the most thoughtful and strategic business people I have come across and his professional journey started working in the family business, a carnival. This episode’s segments about leadership and the future of higher education are, respectively, terrific distillations of the essence of world-class leadership and the dynamics affecting the higher-education sector.

The episode was recorded before his role at Heidrick & Struggles was announced.

  • FAYE’S BIO

Faye owns and runs the best bar and restaurant in the United States, Double Chicken Please, located in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. But the improbable and head spinning story that culminated in what is now one of the hottest places to eat and drink in America is truly the stuff of legend. An amazing woman, Faye got into the business as a teenager, first serving drinks in a pub in Taipei, followed by a rockstar flair bartender stint, eventually becoming one of the most inventive cocktail makers in Shanghai and now in America’s largest city.

She moved to America with nothing but a visa, an idea and a dream which drained her savings over five years, finally opening her restaurant in the middle of Covid. While figuring out the maze of real estate, licenses and all the rest she and her partner embarked on an R&D trip in a Volkswagen van around the country logging thousands of miles to test their concoctions on real people - as she puts it “finding and learning the American palette”.

From her Cold Pizza drink (a margherita margarita) to her Waldorf Salad drink to her NY Beet Salad and Japanese Cold Noodle drinks, Faye is a trailblazer that has won many awards for her creations and now showcases them in the biggest stage of them all. Faye’s tenacity, constant pivoting, pursuit of excellence, resilience, finding product market fit and superb execution of an idea in the most difficult of circumstances to turn it into the best bar in the most competitive market in the world is truly remarkable. Her entrepreneurship combined with her skill, craft and creativity put her at the very top of the game.
