  • 2nd October - 8th October Wrestling History!

    2nd October

2000 – After Vince Russo vacated the WCW World Heavyweight Championship he had won seven days prior on Nitro, Booker T defeated Jeff Jarrett to win the vacant title. The match was a ‘San Francisco 49ers’ match which saw the belt and three mystery items held in boxes on poles in each corner of the ring

    3rd October

2005 – Monday Night Raw returned to its original home, the USA Network, after five years of broadcasting on Spike TV (Formerly TNN). The show was titled ‘Raw: Homecoming’. It was the first-ever three-hour Raw and had a triple main event. Edge defeated Matt Hardy to retain his Money In The Bank contract in a ladder match, Kurt Angle and Shawn Michaels fought to a 2-2 draw in a 30-minute Ironman Match and in the night’s last match, John Cena defeated Eric Bischoff in a No Disqualification WWE Championship match.

    4th October

1975 – Ric Flair was among passengers involved in a plane crash on approach to Wilmington Airport in North Carolina. The plane contained Ric Flair, David Crockett, Bob Bruggers, Tim ‘Mr Wrestling’ Woods, and Johnny Valentine. Although none of the wrestlers passed away, the pilot (Joseph Michael Farkus) slipped into a coma and died two months after the incident. Valentine suffered injuries that confined him to a wheelchair for the rest of his life and Flair famously suffered from a broken back. Multiple doctors implored him to retire from the ring. Instead, he returned to action eight months later.

    5th October

1997 – WWE presented In Your House: Badd Blood from the Kiel Center in St. Louis, Missouri. The event became a landmark in wrestling history, featuring Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker in the very first Hell In A Cell match. The finish to this brutal, classic contest. Ultimately, Michaels won the bout and became the number-one contender for the WWF World Championship. He would receive his title shot the following month at Survivor Series in Montreal against Bret ‘Hitman’ Hart. The bout famously saw the debut of one of the most enduring characters in wrestling history, Kane. Long teased as The Undertaker’s secret little brother by Paul Bearer, the newcomer directly led to the finish of the match by ripping the door from the cell and Tombstoning his ‘brother’ allowing HBK to get the win.

    6th October

1999 – Gorilla Monsoon passed away due to complications brought on by diabetes at the age of 62. Monsoon, real name Robert James Marella, was one of the most revered personalities in the history of the company. The Hall Of Famer was a famed wrestler turned commentator and backstage administrator. Famous for manning the desk right behind the entrance curtain to give last-minute direction and timing to wrestlers, the very position was eventually named The Gorilla Position as a tribute to the icon.

    7th October

2007 – WWE presented ‘No Mercy’ on PPV from the All-State Arena in Chicago. The event was notable for containing a record three WWE Championship matches. The event began with Randy Orton being awarded the title after John Cena’s pectoral injury prior to the event. Orton was then immediately defeated for the title by Triple H. The Game subsequently defended the title against Umaga before losing it back to Orton in a Last Man Standing match, all on the same night

In the main event, Triple H won the vacant WWF Championship in a Six-Pack Challenge against The Rock, Mankind, Kane, The Big Show, and The British Bulldog with the special referee being ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin. Unfortunately, the PPV will be remembered for the Kennel From Hell match between The Big Bossman and Al Snow, which was a cage match inside the hell in a cell structure with ‘vicious’ Rottweilers in between. Thankfully, the gimmick wasn’t used again.

    27th September

    1999:
The highest-rated segment in Raw history (In terms of audience size) aired featuring Mankind (Mick Foley) presenting a ‘This is Your Life’ presentation to the Rock. It would feature guests such as the Rock’s home economics teacher, gym teacher, and old high school girlfriend and he would insult them all in wonderful Rock fashion. The segment had an 8.2 audience rating.

    28th September

    1998:
Following the finish of the previous night’s main event where both Undertaker and Kane pinned WWF champion Stone Cold Steve Austin, Vince McMahon came to Monday Night Raw to announce that neither ‘Taker nor Kane was the champion. With a ring full of staff, McMahon was about to make his announcement when the cameras cut to Stone Cold driving a Zamboni through the backstage area and then to the ring. Crashing into the ring, Austin then launched himself from the top of the Zamboni and started a beat down on McMahon, in what is one of WWE's most watched segments to this day.

    29th September

    September 16th

    1996:
Sting turned his back on WCW. This was part of the ongoing storyline involving a ‘fake Sting’. The Stinger cut a promo telling his fellow stars and the fans off for doubting him. This led him into his famous gimmick change into ‘The Vigilante Sting’ draped in black with his Crow makeup and trusty baseball bat around a month later. • 28th August - 3rd September Wrestling History!

    28th August

    1994:
Two Dudes With Attitude’, Shawn Michaels and Diesel, won the Tag Team titles. They would then vacate the belts in November the same year when the duo split at Survivor Series.

    29th August

    1988:
WWF debuted it’s brand new PPV event: SummerSlam, which was held at Madison Square Garden. After an injury to his original opponent Brutus ‘The Barber’ Beefcake (Caused by an injury sustained after an attack by Ron Bass), Intercontinental Champion The Honky Tonk Man demanded someone to wrestle and didn’t care who. The call was answered by the Ultimate Warrior who dispatched Honky Tonk in 31 seconds to win his first ever title in company and end Honky’s record setting reign as the longest IC champion of all time.

    30th August

    2010:
The 900th episode of Monday Night RAW is broadcast and opens with Bret Hart talking about himself and the Undertaker being the only two people in WWE that were on both this episode of Raw and the first episode in 1993. A match is made by the anonymous General Manager between Bret Hart and the Undertaker later in the show, but the match doesn’t get underway. Instead, the Undertaker is taken out by Kane and then The Nexus.

    31st August

    1998:
Miami, Florida sets the stage for WCW Monday Nitro and the build up to their PPV, WarGames. The match ends in a countout loss for Hogan/Hart due to them arguing in the aisle after Bret took Hogan’s belt away from him that he was using to whip Sting. Afterwards, the Warrior appears in a cloud of smoke in the ring which takes out the NWO.

    1st September

    1979:
Pat Patterson ‘wins’ a tournament in Rio de Janiero to become the first Intercontinental Champion. As most now know, and WWE cheekily acknowledge, no such tournament ever took place and Patterson was simply given the new championship.

    2nd September

On RAW Brock Lesnar declared that he would only defend the WWE Undisputed Championship on SmackDown from that date forward, thus leaving Raw effectively without a world champion. Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff would remedy this the next week by reviving WCW’s ‘Big Gold Belt’ and presenting it to Triple H as Raw and WWE’s first World Heavyweight Champion.

    3rd September

    2017:
House Strong Style (now known as Moustache Mountain and consisting of Pete Dunne, Tyler Bate and Trent Seven) won the CHIKARA King Of Trios tournament by defeating House Sendai Girls (Cassandra Miyagi, Dash Chisako and Meiko Satomura) in the tournament final in Wolverhampton, England.
