In this episode of the Transactional Analysis Podcast, hosts John Fleming and Matt Taylor speak with Graeme Summers and Keith Tudor, the co-developers of Co-Creative Transactional Analysis (TA) and recipients of the 2020 Eric Berne Memorial Award for this contribution to TA.
In this conversation, they trace the origins of Co-Creative TA - from shared questions in training, to years of tussling over theory, to a framework that has shaped how practitioners across psychotherapy, education, coaching, and organisational work understand the heart of TA.
You'll hear them explore:
What Co-Creative TA is and what it is deliberately notThe three principles: we-ness, shared responsibility, and present-centred developmentHow social constructivism and field theory informed their re-reading of BerneWhy health psychology (psychosanology) matters as much as pathology in TA practiceThe difference between transactional analysis and transactional designThe integrating adult and why Graeme now wants to talk about the ‘disintegrating Adult’ tooWhy Co-Creative TA is a meta-perspective rather than a school, and what that means for trainees and practitionersDisclaimer: In this episode, Graeme and Keith are expressing their personal opinions and is not speaking on behalf of any company or organisation.

How Lorena connects movie script and life script The concept of what Lorena calls “CineCounselling”Why cinema can offer a symbolic language when a client can’t yet find wordsUsing film to create the right distance to speak about self through storyA group example using a movie to explore the free child, creativity, and expression with studentsLorena’s view of TA counselling as empowerment for the clientHow movie scenes can make TA concepts more accessibleGuest Information

In this special episode of The Transactional Analysis Podcast, hosts Matt and John pay tribute to Dr. Mark Widdowson, a highly respected Transactional Analyst and a great contributor to the field, who sadly passed away in August of this year.
Dr. Widdowson was a guest on one of our earlier episodes, where he shared his deep knowledge and passion for psychotherapy and Transactional Analysis (TA). His influence on both the TA community and on each of us personally cannot be overstated.
In this episode, we honour his legacy by sharing reflections on his impact and by revisiting his powerful Research Award acceptance speech at the 2017 WTAC (World TA Conference) in Berlin, where he was presented with an award for his research on the effectiveness of TA Psychotherapy.
Dr. Widdowson’s dedication to TA research, particularly in the area of depression, continues to shape the field. His work brought significant insights into evidence-based psychotherapy, and he was known for making complex theories accessible and practical for therapists.
His energy, humour, and commitment to improving the lives of others were felt by all who knew him, and he has left an indelible mark on the TA community.
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Widdowson speaks with his characteristic wit and passion, discussing the importance of research in TA, his journey in the field, and the future of TA as an evidence-based practice. His words are as relevant today as they were then, and we hope they inspire and remind listeners of his immense contribution.
This episode is our way of saying thank you to Dr. Widdowson, for all he gave to the world of TA, and for the countless lives he touched through his work and teaching.

In this episode, we announce several changes to the podcast. John and Matt have spent the last six months considering how to ensure the longevity of the podcast project, which was initiated in 2019. The outcome is a decision to change the name of the podcast from "3 People In Your Head" to "Transactional Analysis Podcast (TAP)", the creation of a Community Interest Company limited by guarantee (a not-for-profit company) and the creation of a board to oversee the governance of the project. We introduce James Longwell (PTSTA), the new Chair of the Board, and discuss our vision and mission to promote TA.

This episode is the first audio version of the Eric Berne Memorial articles from the Transactional Analysis Journal. We plan to publish two a year as part of our sponsorship agreement.
Trudi Newton received the 2023 Eric Berne Memorial Award for her work in establishing a new metaperspective that reframes transactional analysis as positive psychology. The article cited in the nomination, which you are about to hear, read by Trudi herself, is “The Health System: Metaphor and Meaning” from the July 2007 Transactional Analysis Journal.
Trudi’s paper is an exhortation to all of us to engage in a kind of ongoing, ground-breaking process of theoretical evolution through practice, reflecting the spirit of the early pioneers in TA theory.
You can view the diagrams that Trudi references on our website by clicking the link below:
