  • Fran Sands is an amateur boxing coach and mentor to kids and teens in the Northeast of England. His involvement in amateur boxing began in 1978, when at the age of six he entered his first boxing gym. Over the next 13 years he competed in 60 amateur contests, winning regional titles, reaching national semi-finals and finals, and representing England at Under-19 level. At the age of 23, he moved into a coaching role.

Our conversation became deep at times, as it flowed in and out of topics from boxing instruction to mentoring the youth, to strategies and tactics and how being part of a boxing family and an amateur boxing club impacts lives. I found Fran Sands to be smart, thoughtful, and soulful in his approach and outlook, and I quite enjoyed our conversation. I hope you will, too.

  • For over 40 years, Stuart Alve Olson has been studying Taoist and Buddhist philosophy and Chinese language while practicing Taoist meditation and ceremony, Qigong, Taijiquan, Praying Mantis Kung Fu, and Internal Alchemy.

He is the founder, director, and head teacher of the Sanctuary of Tao. Born in the year of the White Tiger (1950) in Minnesota, he is an author/translator of nearly 40 works on Taoist Philosophy, Taijiquan, Qigong, and Taoist internal practices. In his late 20s and early 30s, Stuart began learning from teachers such as Chan Master Hsuan Hua, under whom, on Christmas day 1979, he took refuge as a disciple at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas. Stuart became the disciple of the renown Tai Chi Master T.T. Liang, and learned under many other notable teachers, including Kung fu and healing master Oei Khong-hwei and Dharma Master Cheng Yi.

In the spring of 1982 through 1984, Stuart undertook a Buddhist bowing pilgrimage, “Nine Steps One Bow,” from the Minnesota Zen Center to the border of Nebraska, traveling along state and county roads during the spring, summer, and autumn months. During the winter months, he stayed at Master Liang’s home and bowed in his garage.

Our discussion went deep into many of these areas, as well as others and, as always, Stuart is the consummate gentleman and scholar.

  • In this conversation, Mark V. Wiley and David Kutzik discuss various topics including social media, the impact of technology, the decline of social interaction, and the nature of intelligence. They explore the addictive nature of social media and the control exerted by corporations. They also delve into the role of artificial intelligence and the importance of independent press.

The conversation highlights the social nature of human intelligence and the concept of intelligent agency. Overall, the discussion provides insights into the challenges and implications of living in a highly mediated and technologically driven society.

We explore explores the topics of free will, agency, intelligent agents, ethical agency, political economy, energy sources, climate change, democracy, fascism, tribalism, truth, and the role of media and technology. In this conversation, Dr. David Kutzik discusses the disappearance of journalism and the rise of branding and self-branding. He also shares insights into the development of non-intrusive monitoring technology in gerontology and the challenges of implementing it in the healthcare industry.

Dr. Kutzik highlights the impact of capitalism on healthcare and the need for a shift in business models. Overall, the discussion explores the complexities and limitations of modern healthcare and the importance of critical thinking and ethical practices.

    Takeaways

The concept of free will is argued to be an illusion, with agency being the ability to navigate constraints. Corporations and governments are identified as the dominant intelligent agents responsible for the ecological crisis. The need for socialism or a more socialistic future is discussed as a means to address the challenges of the present. The decline of liberal democracy and the rise of fascism are explored, along with the impact of tribalism and echo chambers. The collapse of truth and the role of media and technology in shaping public opinion are examined. The decline of journalism has led to the spread of misinformation and the normalization of public relations as news. The rise of branding and self-branding has created a culture of narcissism and exploitation. Non-intrusive monitoring technology has the potential to improve caregiving and healthcare, but faces barriers in the current capitalistic business environment. The transformation of business models prioritizes profit over delivering quality care, leading to the exploitation of workers and the erosion of trust in healthcare.
