  • I know, I know you don't use a travel agent any longer. But the service offered by Lyne Barlow, an independent travel agent in County Durham was incredible - way cheaper than everyone else and when you asked her why she would say that the bigger players ripped you off. And all your family and friends were using her and getting great deals on dream holidays. Why not get yourself a deal?

But unfortunately, that old adage about if something seems too good to be true it usually is, held true with the agency operated by Lyne Barlow. But her scale of deception was staggering....

  • Julie Hill was a nurse working in the endoscopy unit of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield. Also working there at this time was Doctor Colin Shawcross and the obvious attraction between the couple led to a sexual relationship developing. There was a slight issue as both were married and living with their partners. However, the relationship continued to deepen and by the summer both realised that they wanted to be with each other. This meant they both had the dreadful task of telling their partners that they were leaving them. In this case these conversations resulted in the most shocking of outcomes...

  • It was a man with an Irish accent who made the warning call with a recognised code word to British Rail at Waterloo at about 8.50pm, saying that a bomb would go off at The London Stock Exchange in 20 minutes. But there was no bomb at the Stock Exchange. At 9.23om, a huge bomb exploded at The Baltic Exchange, half a mile from where the caller had said the attack would take place.

The result was terror, chaos, loss of life and multiple serious injuries. In this episode of the UK True Crime podcast, I tell the story of the horror that was The Baltic Exchange Bombing.

  • Last week we heard how Marian Bates was murdered at her jewellery shop in Nottingham in front of her husband Victor and daughter Xanthe during a botched armed robbery. One of the criminals who was sent to prison for 13 years in connection for conspiracy to rob Marian’s jewellers was Craig Moran. And in April 2017, Moran was out of prison and looking to make up for the lost years behind bars. In the episode this week, we follow his organised crime career from his release to the current day.

  • Marian Bates ran the Time Centre jewellery shop on Front Street in Nottingham with her family. On one normal day, Marian was working as usual with her husband Victor and daughter Xanthe when at about 13:30 armed robbers burst into the shop. Marian was shot during the robbery as she tried to defend her daughter and tragically lost her life at just 64 years old. This robbery, which only netted just about £1,000 for the thieves, resulted in a long chain of events...

  • Seventy seven year old Judith Richardson lived in Hexham in the north of England. Judith was often seen out and about in the town walking her beloved pet dog Hamish a West Highland Terrier. and was well known for her love of organ recitals at the Abbey. One day when her bag turned up in Newcastle, 20 miles from her home, it was handed in to police who arrived at her home to return the bag.

Knocking on Judith’s door brought about no response. There was no sign of a forced entry to the property, but something did not feel quite right. Deciding to force entry into the property, the officers were stunned to discover the body of Judith Richardson lying dead in her hallway. Just who would possibly have wanted to kill Judith? And why?

  • This week, we head to the South-West of England for a shocking story involving the mysterious world of outlaw motorcycle clubs.

There is a famous line about the Hells Angels motorcycle club – if you have to ask how to join the Hells Angels, you probably won’t understand the answer and membership probably isn’t for you.

The episode this week shows the strong ties of the members of these clubs, but on this occasion, a normal evening escalated to such an extent that an innocent man was left dead at the roadside.

  • The episode this week is from South Wales.

Fiona Scourfield lived on a farm with her partner, step-son, dog Bruno and 32 other animals all of whom Fiona adored. She loved animals and worked hard for charities supporting animal welfare, especially dogs.

But Fiona would be tragically murdered at just 54 by someone she had only ever shown love and affection. Shockingly, it was a member of her own family. This week, I look at just what happened to Fiona.

But there are some cases like this one from the north-east of England where Mark Shaw was so brutally attacked that the details of the violence are necessary to the story. Mark was killed by those close to him leaving his friends and family shocked and unable to quite comprehend just what had happened to Mark.

  • It was a bright winters day in Sheffield at about 4pm as two friends were walking to return a drill bit to a tool factory. As the walked, they saw something just off the pavement in the hedges – it hadn’t been covered up and was easily spotted. It was a three foot holdall.

The two men who found it carried it down the road, thinking it contained something valuable like an engine; it was certainly big enough. The bag was covered by a bedding sheet tied with rope and the body was wrapped in polythene. They undid the rope, unzipped the bag, peeled open the polythene and got the shock of their lives. They had found a badly decomposed body - a body that was soon confirmed to be that of a man who had been murdered a number of years before.

Just who had dumped the body in this area where it would easily be found. And who had killed him - and why?
