Uncovered is our series where we take a closer look at some of the Aussie companies that get less analyst coverage and media attention. And today’s episode is a cracker.
When it comes to strokes, there is a saying: time is brain.
During a stroke, blood vessels are blocked and blood carrying essential oxygen cannot make it to brain cells. This lack of oxygen kills 1.9 million brain cells every minute. Sadly, globally, only 35% of patients suffering from an acute stroke arrive at hospital in the critical 4.5 hour window for treatment. As such, stroke researchers around the world are focused on shortening the time to treatment.
Argenica Therapeutics are approaching this problem slightly differently. Rather than trying to get the patient to hospital within the 4.5 hour window, they’ve asked: how can we widen that 4.5 hour window?
To better understand their work, today we speak to Argenica Therapeutics CEO and Managing Director, Dr Liz Dallimore.

Around the world, concussions are the biggest challenge in sport. As the 2023 AFL and NRL season kicks off here in Australia, we are seeing multiple class actions from former players and rule changes to extend the time out of the game players must take after getting concussed.
As such, we thought it was the right time to uncover an Australian company working on the problem of head knocks in sports – Hit-IQ (ASX: HIQ).

This episode focuses on Danimer Scientific, which was founded in 2004 and in 2007 purchased Procter & Gamble’s intellectual property on PHA technology. PHAs or Polyhydroxyalkanoates (let’s just go with PHAs) are polyesters produced by microorganisms.
Danimer produces PHA by feeding vegetable oil into bioreactors where it is consumed by soil borne bacteria. This bacteria produces PHA through biosynthesis. Danimer then turn this PHA into a number of bioplastic products including barrier coating for paper and board products (think, the plastic coating that makes your coffee cup waterproof) and 100% biodegradable dental flossers.

For most of us, abalone, also known as ear shell, sea ear or mutton fish, is a seafood we’ve heard about but never tasted. They are single-shelled, algae-eating, marine molluscs. Rare Foods Australia, which up until last year was named Ocean Grown Abalone, built a world-first artificial reef to grow their abalone. Situated ~300km south of Perth in Augusta, Western Australia this artificial reef is made up of 5,000 separate concrete abalone habitat units. Each of these units can host 400 abalone each. Young abalone are sourced from an onshore hatchery and added to the units. They are then left to grow for two to three years before reaching a marketable size.
