Today we welcome Author Tripp Friedler to talk about his immensely powerful memoir about a father dealing with his son's crippling disorder- in a world that doesn't even understand it.

The Tunnel is a father's memoir about a family's odyssey through the world of serious mental illness. It is a story about the battles Friedler's son Henry fought with his parents, with various authority figures—including schools, teachers, and the police— and most importantly, the battles Henry fought with his own mind. Henry's story takes place for the most part in the distinctive air of Uptown New Orleans. He came from a well-educated and prosperous Southern family, the only son between two sisters.

I highly recommend everyone read this book. Tripp thank you for sharing your story with us. You are allowing the world to better understand what Bi-Polar disorder is and how we can learn to better accept it.

Then Later we welcome New Orleans Restauranteur, Cara Benson! Cara owns many spots across the city that are loved by all! What started with the French bistro, Tartine, located under the gorgeous Live Oaks off of Broadway, Uptown then gave way to the unforgettable Brunch gems like, French Toast in the French Quarter, Toast on Gentilly Blvd, and then Toast in Gretna! This particular location is my kids' all time favorite restaurant because of the amazing vibes and fantastic playground for the littles to play on while you wait to be seated!

Recently, Cara wanted to create another restaurant that caters to specially made breads and dishes with no gluten! Hen House is just that!
She wanted to create a space that would welcome guests that have dietary restrictions, so that they may experience a Brunch that everyone can love!

What makes this restaurant even cooler is that when Mardi Gras season comes,
The Hen House closes and becomes a KING CAKE FACTORY that rolls out the BEST KING CAKE that New Orleans has to offer.

I stand by my statement! Cara's King Cake is unlike anything that I have ever had!
During the Carnival season you can find these delicious cakes at all of her places.

Listen to how it all happened!

Wow. Wow. Wow! What an episode! I am so grateful!

For YEARS, literally over a decade I watched Lucy Bustamante on WWL news as she and her co-anchor, Mike Hoss presented the daily or nightly news. Their chemistry and ability to not only deliver the news like normal, but their respect for each other along with their bits of personality would bubble over through the camera. Their smile, their laugh, their nightly news presentations are so sorely missed. In my own opinion, there hasn't been one since.

WELL, with that said! I tracked down my own Lucy Bustamante after my Karen Swensin interview and was determined to invite Lucy to the show. And not only did I want to invite her but I was committed to finding Mike Hoss and asking him to personally crash the interview. Well friends, it happened. And it was SO FLIPPING GOOD!
Lucy Bustamante is an Emmy and Murrow winning Bilingual News Anchor and journalist and her once co-anchor, Mike Hoss is now the Voice of the NFL Saints on WWL Radio.

Then later, We talk about a seriously important topic that gets lost or forgotten about on a daily basis. Our country's children in foster care. Did you know that when CPS comes to a home to remove a child, they are given a trash bag and about 3 minutes to fill it with the things they cherish most?
There, they travel from home to home toting their life in garbage bag. They deserve better. They deserve dignity. They deserve HOPE for a better tomorrow.
Together with one of our sponsors, Comfortcases.org and founder Rob Scheer, we will partner with "Protection is Affection" CEO Sonya Norsworthy- Marbley
to assemble 300 brand new Comfort Cases that will be given directly to children in our community that are experiencing foster care for the first time.
Together with Louisiana Senator Royce Duplessis, New Orleans Council Member, Lesli Harris and so many more, we will gather Saturday, September 21 from 10am-12:30pm at Ashé Arts and Cultural Center, 1712 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd. in New Orleans.
Lunch will be generously provided to our volunteers by Ruby Slipper Cafe.

Listen now to see how myself, Rob and Sonya, along with a whole team of compassionate humans put together such an impactful and special event!

That summer break went by faster than my patience inside our RV in the middle of the summer desert- with 3 kids! For real!

We had an awesome camping vacation to the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and then to Zion. It was breathtaking. I have a new found respect for the American SouthWest. Being able to witness it with my family and to see my kids' reaction was the best part.

But today? TODAY IS OUR BIG MID SEASON PREMIERE!!
We've been tracking down some of the most inspiring people to talk to! And today is the day! So, Let's Goooo!

First up, is a invaluable resource that our New Orleans Mama's count on.
Created by Ashely Angelico and Elizabeth Shmelling in 2012, they set out on a new and revolutionary way that local mothers learn, share, and connect with other local Mothers in South Louisiana.
Almost 13 years later, they have grown by leaps and bounds. Today, they have over 25 writers that help to introduce subjects, new and old to the conversation. From babies to dinner time, The New Orleans Mom has got the mama COVERED.

Listen as Ashley and Elizabeth sit down with me to talk about the very beginnings of (NOM) and how little sprinkles of fait and faith come together on the other side of the country to create the LEADING choice for South Louisiana's Mama's.

Then later, we welcome back to the show Dr. Lauren Mutter from Ochsner's Children Hospital! Our Segment "Emergency" is all about our listeners submitting their own questions about their children. From sports to diet, to VACATION!
Dr. Lauren and I tackle these questions to help give you a little more insight and information to allow our listening parents the opportunity to make healthier and safer steps in their daily lives.
Today, we are talking about Emergencies, BUT we are highlighting the VACATION pediatric questions that can arise when we all are away!
From the proper meds that should be taken to the baby in an airplane,
Dr. Lauren breaks it all down!

Find out who's question is answered first and wins a Gift Card from our friends over at Rouses Markets!

Our Mid Season Finale is coming in hot! Just like the heat and humidity. I was saving this segment of NolaPapa Eats for the summertime!
Cajun Chef Jarred Zeringue, owner of Wayne Jacobs Smokehouse in Laplace, Louisiana has been smoking hot for almost 100 years!
From gumbo to crawfish to their amazing smoked aundoille and hot dogs, once you try it, you will not go without it!
Chef Jarred even ships his meats all over the country! So no worries if you don’t live in South East Louisiana- just go to his site and order his Cajun cookbook along with all the other goodies.
Having homemade smoked hot dogs on the 4th of July is memory waiting to be made!

And locals, go eat inside his restaurant before you grab your loot to take home.

Go to www.wjsmokehouse.com to find all your goodies!

    Then later,
We are finishing up this mid season with a documentary film maker that made it his mission to showcase the story behind the little Southern studio that could.
"Beyond The Glass: The WDW Animation Building" is about the opening and success of the Walt Disney Animation Florida studio located inside of Then, MGM Studios, which is now Hollywood Studios.
Dane from his YouTube channel Big Beautiful Dis joins me to talk about the AMAZING INTERVIEWS he was able to land to make this documentary so entertaining.
As unlikely as it was, from The Little Mermaid to Aladdin to the Beauty and the Beast, this little animation studio churned out some of the biggest Disney hits in the 1990's.
Watch and find out how! I loved every minute of this documentary!

Hurricane Season SUCKS. I am just putting that out there! There is SO much more added to all of our plates during these 5 months of the year. From our own check lists for water and supplies to making claims to your insurance AFTER a storm. It is incredibly suffocating.
But it is all about order. Keeping your lists organized and safe will keep your head on straight.
Our friends over at the Law Firm of Forrest Cressy and James are back to go over the most important legal advice regarding hurricane season.
From before the storm to after the storm- Eliza James is with me to walk through some of the most anxious times of the year for me!

For your free consultation go to www.FCJlaw.com
    or call
    (504) 688-4776

Then later y’all, we welcome back our pals at the Louisiana SPCA! Hurricanes don't just effect humans, ya know. Rebecca is here to talk about the most important things we need to think of when we are preparing our pets for Hurricane Season.
One thing that really stood out to me is making sure your pet is vaccinated BEFORE the season begins. That way if you do need to evacuate, you will have your current vaccinations and papers to allow your pet to come along safely.
Prepare now and feel better tomorrow!
Rebecca hits home with so many different ways to prepare.
The Louisiana SPCA does a world of good for our community from Humane pet adoption, rescue, shelter and veterinary services all across Louisiana.

Hurricane Season has hit again, folks. Air as wet as a soggy blanket mixed with temperatures that'd make many melt before even stepping outside. Adding to the uncomfortable mixture is the time of year that we all despise. Especially this season, with a whopping 25 Named storms- most in history!
So as we take a breath and get ready, pediatric psychologist from Ochsner Children's Hospital, Dr. Erin Reuther is here to help us navigate.
Rolling off of May and Mental health awareness, we add to the mix with ways to identify anxiety and stress our kids.
As parents, it is up to us to ask our children if they are ok. We do not assume they are. We know this by strategic ways of forming our sentences that allows them to tell me how they feel. For example, "You're OK, Right?"
Listen to the tips that Dr. Reuther talked to me about and apply them to your own family's scenarios!

If you are a concerned parent seeking assistance from an Ochsner Children's Hospital professional,

    Then Later,
We welcome author, J Leonard Costner. In 2012, he transitioned from athlete to author, channeling his diverse experiences and artistic sensibilities into creating “Legacy.” With a degree in art and storyteller’s spirit, Costner crafts narratives that are not just read but vividly experienced, using prose as his canvas to paint the intricate landscapes of his imagination. His international background and artistic expertise converge in his works, offering readers a literary voyage that is as visually captivating as it is emotionally resonant. In "Legacy", and in all of his works, Costner invites readers not just into a story, but into a world. A world that is at once enchanting and believable, vast in scope but intimate in emotion.

Today, J Leonard Costner continues to write, each new work a labor of love, a new landscape painted with words. He is not just an author, but an artist of narrative, a craftsman of worlds, and a guide for readers looking for an adventure that defies the ordinary.

Costner's unique way of storytelling like,
His writing style being non-traditional. Using words to paint an image, which sticks to his strength as an artist rather than a writer.

The exploration of humanity, when life is just that and when it's the Antagonist. Perservearing and choosing to actively participate against all odds and not allowing yourself to be the victim. The ability to create a universally relatable story devoid of the need to use race and sexuality as a crutch. A celebration of all cultures. The exploration of histories nature of repetition.

A unique writer with an ambitious plan to release even more works of art!

His books can be found here!

Look. I love New Orleans as much or more than some. She has her beauties and she has her nightmares. I don’t really know how to address this except to address it head on. My husband is a specialist psychiatrist and we cannot keep up with inflation of everything. I’m coming to you very vulnerable right now. I have built a brand around the city that I love so much. Property taxes that are drowning homeowners. Homeowners insurance, (that is really hard to attain.) Car insurance that is laughable to most of the country. A private school system that is lovely but suffocating. How is New Orleans going to handle this? Luckily, we have our friends over at Berkshire and Hathaway And real estate with Steph. Luckily we have professionals that can help us steer and the direction we need to go. Whether it’s on the South Shore or in the parish like Chalmette or on the North Shore. Stephanie knows everything and I’m excited to invite you to this conversation, because it is deep..

Find everything about our amazing sponsor and representative Stephanie at www.realestatewithsteph.com

Then later, we welcome our amazing partners over at Ochsner children’s to bring our second segment of EMERGENCY!! With Dr. Mutter.
I’m so excited about this because we have submissions from our amazing audience. The listeners submit their questions and if chosen by Dr. Mutter, they receive a gift card from Rouses markets!
We are asking about summer holiday vacation! And the winner goes to Victoria Zemke! There are so many things that parents should be aware of during summer holiday and this segment will show you that. Congratulations to Victoria and we cannot wait to introduce the next segment of. May is National Foster Care Awareness Month. It is a time to acknowledge the 463,000 American children and youth in foster care and the family members, foster caregivers, volunteers, mentors, child welfare professionals, and policymakers who help children and youth find permanent homes and connections.
Today we welcome back our partners and friends over at ComfortCases.org.
The founder, Rob has been on the show multiple times and we have had a blast. But this time, he has left the room!
We are welcoming another important piece to the puzzle, Heidi Webb!
Heidi breaks down what is exactly in a comfort case. But most importantly, she really paints an emotional picture of what it is like in the beginning for a child entering the system as they are given a plastic trash bag to put all of their belongings in.
    Y’all, it is heart wrenching.
Listen as Heidi talks about all of the hundreds upon hundreds of volunteers that come together to create these Comfort Cases, these packs stuffed with love.
All to give these kids dignity in the darkest times of their lives.

I strongly suggest you get involved with comfortcases.org like we have.
And They are coming to New Orleans this Fall!
Find out how you can get involved! [email protected]

Then later, we welcome a BRAND SPANKIN' NEW SEGMENT! Sponsored by our friends at New Orleans Ice Cream Co.
We present to you, "The NolaPapa Secret Fun Stop!"
My mission to find SECRET, FUN SPOTS around South Louisiana. We all have our usual places that we go to regularly. This is different. Think Unique!
Our first guest created her business 12 Years ago by captivating her tour groups filled with children of all ages as they walked the streets of the Historic French Quarter.
Jill Dresser's inspiring story of perseverance will allow us all to be grateful for every moment, because our lives can change in a split second.

"French Quar-Tour Kids" was created to make learning fun in a new and exciting way.
Jill has customized different Spooky Tours for the little ones from 4-9 years old and the Tween Twilight tour that is geared towards the older crowd. There are even more to choose from as well!
She invited my kids to go on her "Spooky Treasure Hunt" and we had the best time!
They especially loved playing with the real investigation gadgets!

I assure you that this is a SECRET FUN SPOT that your family will love!

If you have not gathered by now, I really love local news anchors and journalists. From a kid until now, I love following along with different ones. I remember as a boy there was this one news lady named Jean Burns back home on WDAM in Hattiesburg, Ms.
Holy Smokes. She was a knock out. And her name was so French like. I was smitten. Imagine my reaction when my little sister won a big beauty pageant and the news came to our house to film an interview.
As I looked out of the blinds from our Southern Mississippi home my knees buckled. There she was. Jean Burns stepped out of the news car.
She was so soft spoken, yet so commanding and confident in her presence.

Look, I was as gay as a peacock in a button down, but I still had an innocent childhood crush on that news lady.
And from then on, I loved News people. I even got a tour of the meteorology department at our local news WHLT22. The weather man was super nice and allowed me to see the set when I was 14 or 15. I didn't care too much about meteorology.
I just liked the cameras and sets. I was blown away at how small it felt.

And here I am later, all these years after, and I still have that same sense
    of wonderment of it all.
After I moved to New Orleans and settled down...I started to get into my new healthy rhythm that involved: local news and The Price is Right.
An unlikely pair, I'd agree. But for me, that was my jam.
I found my place here in Nola and really loved connecting with different media personalities from the television. From the weather people like Bob Breck and Margaret Orr or News Anchors like Angela Hill, Lucy Bustamante and Karen Swensen.

Speaking of Emmy Award winning Karen Swensen- Her ability to connect with the audience was so authentically genuine. To my recollection, Lucy Bustamante had just left WWL and I was wrecked. WRECKED. I literally cried on her last 10pm segment. Stop laughing.

I didn't think there would be another journalist that would bring that level of charm, passion and kindness to that particular news desk- until there was!
In came, Karen Swensen- with such a light and a much needed smile to help Nola's scorned hearts recover over Lucy's departure. Both Lucy and Karen can smile with their eyes. Not everyone can do that.
Karen's ability to report with such a sensitive and empathetic way was unique, all in her own. She was able to share the light of a story while it still being as dark as some reporting can be.
Her smile and chemistry with everyone she worked with was inspirational.
After her husband's passing, Karen Swensen started a business called
    Life’s About Change.
Now she's partnering with other small businesses to offer a platform of hope and optimism by spotlighting artisans' products.
She is commonly seen with her bestie on The Today Show with Hoda and Jenna.
From WWL to The Today Show- the light Ms. Swensen shines with the grace and love she shares is unmatched and anyone that has met her would agree.

Find more about Karen Swensen's passionate work at:
