  • I’m excited to share a special episode with you from The Travis Macy Show. Travis recently sat down with Kari Loya for a conversation that will leave you reflecting on your relationship with your father and children.

Kari is the author of the book Conversations Across America which is about a 73-day, 4,600-mile cross-country bike trip Kari took in 2015 with his 75-year-old dad, Merv, who had early-stage Alzheimer’s.

As I was editing this episode for Travis’ show I found myself reflecting about my dad, some of the many adventures we have had together, and how fragile that all felt last summer when he was diagnosed with cancer again

There is a moment at the end of Kari and Travis’ chat that just about killed me. I’m reminded how lucky I am to have the relationship with my dad (truly with both my parents) that I have, and if you are lucky enough to feel the same - I hope this conversation moves those same feelings in you.

Please be sure to check out the Travis Macy Show for more inspiring conversations like this one - and also grab a copy of Kari’s book!

  • For this Father's Day episode of the podcast, I sat down with my dad Mike “Pappy” Palmer to have a real heartfelt conversation about family, parenting, and life. We sat down over a glass of bourbon and covered a lot of ground - from our experiences raising kids and being grandparents, to how family dynamics have changed over the generations.

Dad shared his perspective on the differences between being a parent and being a grandparent, which was really interesting to hear. We also got a little deep talking about coping with his cancer diagnosis last year and what that was like for both of us as a parent and child. Dad had some really wise insights about preparing kids for life's ups and downs.

I really enjoyed talking with dad about how we each define success at this stage in life. I'm really thankful I was able to sit down and have this talk with dad and hope you enjoy it!

  • I'm really excited to bring you this conversation I got to have with my good friend and the host of the Travis Macy Show, Travis Macy, and legendary mountain guide and adventurer Jason Antin.

You may know Jason from his incredible Beat Monday series where he and former WDDR guest Mike Chambers take on epic outdoor challenges in 64 hours from Friday evening to Monday morning.

I’ve wanted to have Jason on the show for a long time, and I am glad Travis could join us for this chat.

I love hearing from endurance athletes about how they can apply the grit and determination they learn from their training and adventures to parenting and vice versa.

We got some great insights from Jason on topics like pushing kids into activities, specializing versus sampling sports, and how Jason manages risk both as a guide and a dad.

Jason also shared lessons he's taken from his many adventures on living passionately while prioritizing family responsibilities.

I think you'll really enjoy this conversation and I hope you take away from it as much as I did.

If you haven’t already please make sure to go check out The Travis Macy Show wherever you are listening to this podcast. I feel fortunate to call Travis a friend and to produce his podcast. Travis is a great podcast host and I feel like I have grown a little every week when I get done listening to his show, and I think that is pretty cool.

  • I first met Dr. Scott Frey when editing an episode of Choose The Hard Way hosted by Andrew Vontz and was immediately drawn to his story.

Scott is an award-winning scientist, mentor, husband, father, and lifelong endurance athlete with over 30 years of experience at the forefront of research on the relationship between the human brain, our thoughts, and behaviors.

Today, Scott joins me to discuss the lessons he has learned from parenting his children and stepchildren, how he approached raising his kids with an openness to diversity, and the challenges of navigating technology use as a family in today's world.

We also touch on defining success and finding purpose beyond achievements or possessions.

I really enjoyed this chat with Scott and appreciate his thoughtful perspective on parenting, childhood development, and living with intention.

As you know my goal with this show is to have real and vulnerable conversations about the life we live as dads. A big thanks to Scott for doing just that and sharing his story this week.

We will be back in 2024 with new episodes and I am really looking forward to it! I hope all of you out in listener land have a great holiday season with your friends and family.

  • I am really excited to share this conversation with Alex Palmer. And even though we have the same last name and an almost identical accent - we are not related.

In this episode, Alex and I talk about what it is like to experience a difficult pregnancy, fertility treatments, miscarriages, IVF and many of the other challenges that can come with trying to get pregnant - from the male perspective.

As listeners of this show will likely know, this subject is very personal to me and one that I feel is very important for men to talk about. Alex and I talk about how lonely and one-sided the process can feel for men and why we feel it is so important for men to talk to other men about what they're going through.

Alex and I recorded this conversation this summer, so you will hear him talking about being pregnant during this conversation. I am happy to report that in early November Alex and his wife Gretchen’s baby boy joined them and they are all doing well and are properly sleep-deprived!

Alex is the founder and host of The Fellowman Podcast (formerly the Blackdog Cast) and does great work over there so be sure to check it out.

My goal with this show is to have real conversations about the life we experience as dads. A big thanks to Alex for getting vulnerable and sharing his story. • The fatherhood journey is a team sport. In the midst of striving for balance, recovering from perfection, and finding your own path, how can parents stay present in their experience?

In this candid conversation, Travis Macy and Anthony Palmer join forces to reflect on how they navigate the challenges and joys of parenting, while also juggling work and personal life. They share wisdom passed down from their own dads and look to the future.

Plus, these two dads discuss how technology impacts parenting, and share hilarious and heartwarming stories from fatherhood.

  • It has been almost a year - a YEAR! - since our last Wake.Dad.Drink.Repeat. episode dropped and we are kicking things back off with a very special story.

This week on the pod, Phillip McCall joins me for a very deep and personal conversation about the journey that he, his wife Erin, and their son Wade have been on since 2021.

While Erin was pregnant, their son Wade was diagnosed with Bladder Outlet Obstruction (BOO). While their story is filled with challenges, anxiety, setbacks, and periods of mourning - it is also full of love and support and has left Phillip with a deep understanding in the power of opening up, sharing, and “letting people in.”

Phillip and I talked about miscarriages and the emotional and mental struggles men face during difficult pregnancies. We also discussed finding peace in chaos and navigating major challenges with our healthcare system.

Plus, Phillip shares powerful stories about how they nurtured their marriage relationship while their son was in the NICU. For a deeper dive into the Mcall’s story you can check out their blog here.

This story is a perfect example of why I started this show, and I am so grateful to be back with each of you. Thanks for tuning in.

  • This week on the pod, Palmer is joined by Mike Watts.

Mike is a dad to two, has a killer accent and is really good at breathing.

Ok - so that sounds a little wild, but its true. Mike is a mater instructor with Oxygen Advantage and a really great guy.

In this episode Palmer and Mike chat about:
-human performance vs. athlete performance and how they relate
    -Mike defines functional breathing
-high performance habits (breath, how we think, how we feel, sleep, how we nourish ourselves, etc) and why Mike started working on these
-Mike shares a couple different breath work activities
    -Leadership
    -and a ton more!

This was a really fun conversation and we hope you feel as inspired as we did while recording. Inspired not only to prioritize breath work in your life, but to think about your high performance habits and how dialing them in can help you to be a better leader and more present for your family.

  • This week on the pod Palmer is joined by Barry Bales!

Barry is a lot of things, as a musician, he has been the bassist for Alison Krauss and Union Station for 30+ years. He is a songwriter and has played with the likes of Vince Gill, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, and more. Oh and he is the winner of 15 Grammy Awards!

Barry is a husband and has one son, Marshall who is 15. Barry is a 5th-generation farmer. He and his family own Bales Farm, where they raise grass-fed/grass-finished beef, pasture-raised chicken, pasture-raised pork, and free-range eggs.

Barry and his wife, Aliceson, were kind enough to have us out to the farm to record this episode. We sat outside on one of their porches and talked over a glass of bourbon on a beautiful East Tennessee day.

Barry and Palmer talked about the importance of knowing when and what life lessons to teach our kids and the mediums to use when teaching, about his time as a child growing up on the farm, and the love and admiration he had for his grandfather, and the challenges of managing our own expectations of what we want for our kids. They talked a bit about the music industry and some of the changes Barry has seen during his time in it and spent the last part of the conversation talking about regenerative farming, why they practice it at Bales Farm, and why we need to see changes happening in our farming and food culture.

A big thanks again to Barry for joining the podcast!

  • We are mixing things up a bit this week - and doing a Monday drop! We are doing this because the guest this week is, me! Travis Macy is back on the pod but this time as host.

The pod has grown a lot over the last year, and last week's guest (Chris Baddick), had a great idea for me to reintroduce myself to the audience and dive into my fatherhood story a bit. I thought it was a great idea and really enjoyed recording this episode.

When I was trying to decide who to get to help me with this, Travis was the first name that came to mind. Not only is he the host of the Travis Macy Show, but Travis is a friend, a client, and someone who I have really come to admire and have a lot of respect for as a human. A huge thanks to him for taking over the show. Please be sure to head over this his pod, subscribe and leave it a review!

I hope you all had a wonderful Father's Day weekend, and I will catch you in 2 weeks!

  • Don't fear - Wake. Dad. Drink. Repeat. is back just in time for Father's Day!

Chris Baddick joins Palmer this week on the pod for a conversation that focuses on untangling the whirlwind of life - and embracing the lessons learned along the way. Chris is a dad to two young girls, a former professional mountain biker, and a lover of all things outside.

Things get deep quick in this week's episode, with a conversation about Chris' father-in-law being diagnosed with ALS and how that event pushed him and his wife to leave the life they knew so that they could run the family business and live closer to family.

Chris and Palmer discuss cycling, spending time outside with kids, the "10-minute miracle" (it's not what you think it is), how Chris defines success, and much more.

A big thanks to Chris for joining the conversation!

  • This week on the pod I’m joined by my buddy Travis Macy! Travis made his first appearance on the pod back in August of 2021 and I am thrilled to have him back! Travis is a dad to two, the host of the Travis Macy Show, an author, endurance coach and just an incredibly genuine human who I feel very lucky to get to call a friend.

  • This week on the pod I am joined by Michael Friedberg!

Michael is a dad to one, former US Ski Team Member & World Cup athlete, and an incredibly good human. Michael and I talk a lot about the respect, admiration and love we have for our dads on this pod, about his journey as a dad, and about the recent Marshall fire in Boulder, Co.

Michael, his wife Rachel, and their daughter Darwin lost their home and all their belongings in the recent fire and as unimaginably challenging as that is, they have been wrapped in love and support by family, friends, and the Boulder community.

Even though it is a story full of sadness, it is also one full of beauty, hope and kindness-something that feels to be missing in so much of the dialogue in today's society.

  • This week on the pod I am joined by JJ Johnson. JJ is a dad to twins, the Chef/Foudner of FIELDTRIP, the co-author of Between Harlem and Heaven, and host of the cooking show - Just Eats with Chef JJ.

JJ and I talked a lot about the intersection of food and culture on the pod this week. We dove into how he shares culture through cooking, why he feels it is so important to do so, and I asked him if he feels a sense of responsibility to share culture through his cooking and how he hopes to share all of this with his kids.

We also talked about some of the cultural struggles of being a black father raising black kids, how he and his restaurant worked to support their community during the Covid-19 pandemic, and we had some laughs over him cutting his teeth as a parent with twins!

Andy and I dive into a lot on the pod this week! Andy talks about some funny stories from the campaigns he has worked on at Liquid Death (like capturing some of Tony Hawk’s blood), his training for the Barkley Marathon and the Vol State Race.

We also take a dive into the world of climate change and how we view its impacts now as dads. We talk about how important protecting our planet and “playgrounds” are so we can adventure with our kids, and how we are capable of making the change we need. Andy wraps up the show with some killer thoughts during our rapid fire section.

I had a great time connecting with Jason again. We dove into a lot on this episode, but the conversation started with talking about the new book that he and his son True wrote, how that journey started and what it was like getting to have that experience with his son.

This led to a deeper conversation around courage, Jason’s current work helping to get folks out of Afghanistan, mental health, race and its relationship to privilege and parenting, getting involved in local elections, “normalizing stuff” and much more!
