  • In this brand new episode of the Wake the F*ck Up podcast, our host Alix sits down with Laura Walton, a licensed marriage and family therapist, grief coach, yoga instructor, and author, to explore the deep and often taboo subject of grief. Laura shares her personal journey of profound loss, including the suicide of her father when she was just 21, and the overdose death of her boyfriend at 26. These experiences have shaped Laura’s mission to offer better support for those navigating grief, particularly those grieving “difficult” losses that carry stigma, such as suicide and drug overdose.

    Throughout the conversation, Laura emphasizes the importance of allowing grief to be witnessed and giving space to the uncomfortable emotions that arise when we lose someone we love. Alix and Laura discuss how yoga and somatic practices—such as mindfulness, breathwork, and movement—can be powerful tools for healing, offering a safe space to process grief in both the body and mind. The discussion also delves into the challenges of grieving in a society that often doesn’t know how to handle such heavy emotions, particularly when it comes to “taboo” deaths that may be met with silence or judgment.

    Later in the episode, Alix and Laura share their personal experiences with grief and relationships, both old and new. They touch on the difficulties of integrating past losses into present-day connections, especially when dating after loss, and the unique dynamics of blending families after multiple tragedies. Alix and Laura have a shared vision for redefining grief—not as something to get over, but as an ongoing journey that can coexist with joy and new growth.

    As the episode wraps up, Laura introduces her upcoming book on yoga and grief, offering listeners an exciting glimpse into her work and inviting everyone to embrace their emotional experiences in whatever form they take. If you’re seeking new tools for emotional healing, you’re welcome to explore Laura’s website for widow resources. • Welcome back to the Wake the F*** Up podcast, as we delve into all that 2025 has to offer. Our hosts Alix and David kick off the episode by reflecting on their holiday experiences as a family. Familiar themes of grief, family dynamics, and the evolution of traditions after loss are woven through this discussion as we catch our listeners up on what Dalix and David have been up to during the holiday break. If you experienced challenging family dynamics during the holidays (who doesn’t?!) you'll relate to this conversation. Our hosts share personal stories about navigating grief within their families, highlighting how in a large blended family, each child copes differently, but there are still universal feelings of anxiety and grief that family members will have in common.

    Alix and David discuss their experiences with changing holiday traditions, the emotional weight of ornaments, and the challenge of blending old traditions with new ones. The conversation also touches on therapy, particularly somatic experiencing and sound therapy, emphasizing the importance of processing difficult emotions and practicing self-love and acceptance.

    As the New Year approaches, Alix and David remain focused on acknowledging struggles and setting compassionate resolutions. The key takeaway here: it’s ok to not be ok. • Welcome back to the Wake the F*ck Up Podcast. This week Alix and David are excited to share a brand new framework we have been working on around healing loss with self-love. Using self love as a tool for healing your grief is a guiding principle of our work here at Wake Wellness. Like the grief cycle this is sequential but not always linear. Alix sat down with Dr. David to walk through the steps in a live podcast recording session. We’re sharing this 90-minute conversation in two parts, so be sure to turn back in next week for the next half of our conversation.

    We have received a ton of great feedback on our YouTube channel from listeners responding to David’s raw and unfiltered insights on male healing and this episode is no different. Listen as Alix walks David through the five steps of healing from loss, from shattering to returning to love.

    Step 1: Acute Onset of Shattering - David shares his experience of Betsy's sudden death. Alix and David share an insightful discussion about the different types of grief, from sudden loss to prolonged illness, and how they can impact people differently. You’ll also hear our hosts reflect on some of the more commonly known aspects of grief such as the shock and denial phases that often come immediately in the wake of major loss. David is sharing his grief process in these five steps but this framework can work for any of our listeners processing their grief and learning to heal with self love.

    Step 2: Going Inside - Next in the five steps of healing, David shares his struggle with old coping strategies. Discovering the importance of introspection and mindfulness is a key turning point in David’s journey, and as he shares with Alix, is was this phase of grief that led to his realization of needing professional help.

    Step 3: Trusting Yourself - David reflects on his experience with therapy and how it helped normalize his grief. David discusses the profound importance of professional help in his healing journey, and cites this as a critical tool for him to begin building self-trust, unlocking self-discovery and learning self-care.

    As Alix shares throughout this episode, this framework can work for any of our listeners processing their grief and learning to heal with self love. There are still two more steps for Alix and David to talk through so be sure to tune in next week for part two of this episode. Warning: It gets even more raw and more real as David shares his unfiltered emotions in processing these five steps with Alix. We hope you’ll join us and continue to find these tools useful and helpful in your journey through loss and grief and into self love.

  • EAT, PRAY, LOVE—these words have resonated deeply with many of us, a timeless reminder of life’s cyclical nature, its trials, and the possibility for transformation. As Alix and Dr. David Long take time off on maternity leave, a new chapter is unfolding for them, one that intertwines the complexities of loss, love, and new beginnings. In their absence, Cally Skye, Dionne, and Katie have arrived in Mexico to lead the Rebirth Retreat, a transformative experience designed to help individuals navigate grief, rediscover personal wellness, and reconnect with their deeper selves.

    It’s almost poetic, though entirely unintentional, that the circumstances surrounding the retreat mirror the very themes we explore here: life’s unpredictable nature, the paradox of joy and sorrow, and the beauty found in the process of healing. Alix and Dr. David Long, who both experienced the heart-wrenching loss of their previous spouses, are now embarking on a new chapter in their lives as not only a newly married couple but as parents for the sixth time. It’s a journey of profound resilience, as they blend together a blended family, much like the Brady Bunch, but through the lens of grief.

    As we begin our exploration in Mexico, Katie Coffee, an experienced grief mentor and wellness coach, leads us on an extraordinary journey to Puerto Vallarta—a town rich in culture, natural beauty, and deep spiritual significance.

    In this sacred space, participants in the Rebirth Retreat are encouraged to explore the complex layers of their grief, reclaim their personal power, and reconnect with their ancestral wisdom. Cynthia Corfah, a retreat participant, shares her deeply personal experience of how she connected with her ancestors during this journey, discovering not only the stories of those who came before her but also the strength and resilience that runs through her bloodline. Through guided meditation, nature immersion, and storytelling, she uncovered insights that have helped her heal and move forward in an empowered way.

    The Rebirth Retreat focuses on the healing power of grief—an understanding that grief is not something to be fixed or avoided, but a natural and transformative process that can lead to personal growth. By embracing grief, we unlock the potential for deep emotional and spiritual healing, allowing us to fully embrace life once more. Through a combination of wellness practices, mindfulness techniques, and grief mentoring, participants are supported in navigating their individual journeys toward healing, self-acceptance, and renewal.

    If you’re ready to embark on your own healing journey and discover how grief can lead to personal growth, we invite you to read more about Cynthia Corfah’s transformative experience here. Her story offers a deeper look into how reconnecting with ancestral roots can bring clarity, healing, and insight into the grieving process.

Dionne will be part of our team leading a variety of therapeutic activities carefully curated to help you heal grief and trauma and awake to your true self. Dionne specializes in intergenerational trauma, ancestral trauma, grief, heartbreak, burnout, and all of these things that are not really addressed in typical wellness programs. Dionne calls these struggles “the silent drainers” and she has been working on retreats for more than twelve years, leading with techniques and tools to help support your physical and mental wellbeing.

    Dionne kicks off the podcast by sharing her diverse background and transformative journey from overcoming a spinal injury to becoming a mentor focused on sustainable wellness. Dionne and Katie discuss insights on wellness practices, including the importance of daily habits like meditation, reading, hydration, and yoga. Dionne’s advice: tap into your natural curiosity and invest in yourself every day.

    Dionne also warns our listeners about the signs of fear-based decision making: overthinking, seeking validation, and the classic physical sensations of stress and anxiety. Dionne encourages our listeners to look out for these signs and embrace mindful decision-making, rather than operating from a place of fear.

    Later in the podcast Katie and Dionne dive into what you can expect at this year’s Rebirth Retreat. Intention setting, meditation, movement (yoga, ecstatic dance) will all be part of your experience, tailored to help our guests reclaim lost parts of themselves. Workshops will focus on grief release, ancestral healing, limiting beliefs, voice and heart expansion.

    Finally, we’re answering some important questions about packing essentials. Dionne gives her recommendations for what to wear, what shoes you might need, and essential items you’ll want to bring along to maximize your enjoyment of the retreat. Top of the list: SPF, sunglasses, your passport, and your favorite thermos or water bottle (hydration is key).

    As we wrap up the podcast, you’re invited to reach out with any questions. We want this to be a safe, open-minded environment for everyone involved, and we are so excited to have Dionne leading some of our programming and bringing her expertise to our retreat.

  • The team at WAKE Wellness is working hard to put the finishing touches on our WAKE Wellness Puerto Vallarta Rebirth Retreat coming up November 2-9. We wanted to re-share this interview with one of our amazing retreat team members Cally Skye, to help give you a better idea of what to expect on a wellness retreat. Our podcast team will be back soon with brand new content and lots of exciting updates from the WAKE team. Until then, enjoy this candid and insightful conversation between our guest host Katie Coffee and Cally Skye.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    If you’re curious about what to expect on a wellness retreat and what you might get out of it, you’re going to want to dive into this week’s episode of the Wake the F*ck Up Podcast. Guest host Katie Coffee welcomes special guest Cally Skye, our resident expert in breath work, yoga, trauma release and empowerment. Cally will be lending her skills and insights to our WAKE Wellness Puerto Vallarta Rebirth Retreat coming up in November. Today she joins us on the podcast to talk about all the experiences you can expect at the retreat.
    To kick off the podcast, Katie and Cally dive into a little bit of background about Cally’s career journey, including past experiences with toxic relationships, emphasizing the importance of self-discovery and healing. Cally shares how she initially got into breath work and why she decided to pursue a career of helping people heal and take better care of their wellbeing, both physically and emotionally. Cally also shares her biggest takeaway from last year's WAKE retreat and the lasting impact that she has experienced.
    Later in this episode, Katie and Cally explore questions about why it’s so hard for us to let down our walls around other people, and the impact that generational trauma can have on your psyche. Cally also shares her insights on how perfectionism is the enemy of authenticity and that by allowing yourself to be misunderstood you can stand in your truth and embrace your authentic self.
    Cally says one of the ways people can benefit from a wellness retreat is by tuning out the noise so that you can really tune into yourself again. This is likely the most unplugged that you're going to be through the whole year, and this is an opportunity to give yourself that permission to say, “I don't need the outside world right now. It'll be there when I get back. It'll always be there. It'll always be loud.” Going on a retreat gives you the chance to examine what happens when you turn down the noise of the outside world and ask yourself “What do I hear when I'm quiet and when I'm still, like, what is actually true? What voice is mine, and what voice is an ex partner or, like, a bad friend, maybe? Whatever it might be.” We hope you’ll join us on the WAKE Rebirth Retreat to discover the answers to those questions.
    You don’t want to miss the deep insights from Cally and Katie as they each discuss their own personal intentions for the retreat this year, and the emotional struggles they are hoping to release and heal from through this experience. Cally also shares how she will be bringing her musical talents to the retreat, playing flute as part of the relaxation and meditation ceremonies. Plus, Callie demonstrates a simple breath work technique and shares her approach to sound meditations during retreats. The key takeaway here is the importance of slowing down and being present
  • This week on the Wake the F*ck up Podcast we share a widow’s journey to healing. Amanda Kurtz sits down with Katie to share the story of how she lost her husband in April 2023 to Stage Four stomach cancer. They had been together for more than 11 years, and had just gotten married in January 2023. In this episode, Amanda shares her poignant journey of grief following her husband’s death so shortly after their wedding. She reflects on the profound impact this experience had on her mental health, her role as a parent to her 15-year-old son, and the importance of setting personal boundaries during such a challenging time. As you’ll hear in this episode, Amanda feels a strong calling to become a grief coach and help others who have been through her same journey.
    If you are a frequent WAKE podcast listener then you already know we highly recommend therapy as a tool for healing from grief. Amanda shares how she started therapy two weeks after Eric’s passing, and took a mental health leave from work to prioritize her well-being and support her son. She emphasizes how crucial it is to allow yourself to feel all the emotions deeply and completely during your grief journey, and encourages listeners to monitor their loved ones for changes, particularly teenagers, as they navigate their own grief.
    Later in the episode, Amanda discusses how living in a small community where her husband was well-known presented unique challenges, especially when it comes to the potential for dating again. Amanda shares her thoughtful approach to this delicate situation, including how she symbolically changed her jewelry to reflect her family's current dynamic. She speaks candidly about the complexities of introducing someone new to her son and the cautious optimism she feels about re-entering the dating world.
    Professionally, Amanda works as a health record ambassador, a role that brings its own emotional burdens, particularly when dealing with do-not-resuscitate orders, or DNRs. A DNR order is a medical order written by a health care provider. It instructs providers not to do CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) if a patient's breathing stops or if the patient's heart stops beating. These are complex and emotional topics, and they can be very hard to deal with in the moment of a health crisis. Amanda highlights the importance of having early discussions about end-of-life decisions, advocating for proactive conversations to ease the burden on families during difficult times.
    As Amanda tells us, losing Eric helped her connect more deeply with her authentic self, and also helped her see more clearly the true nature of others around her. Looking ahead, Amanda shares her aspirations to become a grief coach and establish a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting young widows and widowers.
We hope that this message connects with you as deeply as it has with all of us.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>
    Welcome back to a very special episode of the Wake the F*ck up Podcast. Our hosts Alix and David sat down to record this episode barely a week before Alix’s due date with their baby girl. It has been a very emotional month as they prepare to welcome this new life, while Alix also marks the five year anniversary of the death of her first husband Carl.
    Throughout this episode Alix shares her personal experiences with grief. She kicks off the episode with an insightful metaphor comparing coffee to grief. The metaphor illustrates how much can unknowingly occur in loss, and how your routines and habits, both big and small, get completely disrupted after loss. As Alix points out, grief affects even the simplest daily activities.
    Alix and David also share their experiences with the difficulties involved in making end-of-life decisions, and the guilt and regret that can come during the final days of a loved one’s life, and persist long after they are gone.
    Later in the podcast Alix and David explore the topic of legacies left by loved ones, and the choice to live and rebuild life after loss. The idea of legacy is not just about your professional life or your work, but also about the influence you may have on your friends and family.
    Every person’s grief experience is different. This podcast episode takes a deep look at grief as a complex journey of self-discovery, emphasizing the importance of self-love. If you are a regular WAKE podcast listener then you know challenges like guilt and anger are common, and it’s incredibly important to seek out resources, self care, and support for your grief journey.
    As Alix marks 5 years since Carl’s death, the key takeaway of this episode is that while grief evolves and integrates into life, honoring the memory of those we've lost remains a vital part of moving forward. Alix wraps up the episode by encouraging our podcast listeners to cherish every moment with the people you love.
