  • Tucked between the Apennines and the Ligurian Sea, Genoa is one of Italy’s most captivating cities, and one of its most overlooked.

Home to one of the largest medieval centres in Europe, a UNESCO-listed collection of Renaissance palaces and a food culture that gave the world pesto and focaccia, Genoa is a city to be savoured.

In this episode of Wanderlust: Off the Page, host Aaron Millar is joined by regular Wanderlust contributor Tristan Rutherford, who fell in love with the city on his first visit over 25 years ago and is still coming back for more.

Receiving just a fraction of visitors as the county’s better-known cities, this is a journey on the road less travelled into the heart of one of Italy’s most beautiful, historic, and delicious destinations.

    Highlights include:

    • Spend a night in a palace. On select occasions, Genoa's tourist board opens up the city's UNESCO-listed aristocratic palaces for visitors to spend the night. It’s a rare chance to experience the extraordinary opulence of what was once one of Renaissance Italy's most powerful cities.

    • See a once-in-a-generation Van Dyck exhibition. Van Dyck spent six formative years in Genoa, and this summer the city is reuniting the greatest collection of his portraits ever assembled, many never publicly displayed before.

    • Get lost in the caruggi. Genoa's medieval old town is one of the largest in Europe - a labyrinth of narrow alleyways, historic shops and ancient bakeries where locals still get lost today.

    • Pesto, focaccia and wildflower gelato. Genoa invented pesto, mastered focaccia and has been perfecting the art of wildflower gelato and candied fruit for centuries.

    • The best-value base in northern Italy. Portofino in 30 minutes away. Cinque Terre just over an hour. Milan, Florence and the Italian Alps all within easy reach. Genoa is the perfect base for day trips to explore the surrounding area, without breaking the bank.

    • The Rolli Days - and why 2026 is the year to go. Every October, Genoa’s most extraordinary private palaces open to the public. This year also marks the 20th anniversary of the Palazzi dei Rolli’s UNESCO inscription, making it the perfect moment to visit.

  • Think you know Texas? San Antonio will surprise you. It moves at its own pace, wears its history on every street corner, and welcomes strangers to its table as if they’ve always belonged.

In this episode of Wanderlust: Off the Page, host Aaron Millar is joined by Wanderlust’s North America Editor Jacqui Agate; Manuel Davila - artist, Indigenous tour guide and member of the Tap Pilam Coahuiltecan Nation; and celebrated chef Johnny Hernandez, to explore the food, culture and extraordinary history of the Lone Star state’s best-kept secret.

    Highlights include:

    • The Alamo - but not as you know it. Everyone knows the name. Almost nobody knows the full story. Manuel Davila reveals 13,000 years of history hiding in plain sight - and why the account of the famous battle only survived because of the women who lived to tell it.

    • The city that wears its culture on its walls. From ochre pigments gathered at the riverbank - the same ones his ancestors used on the missions — to murals covering entire neighbourhoods, Manuel Davila shows why San Antonio doesn’t put its culture in a museum. It lives it.

    • UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. Chef Johnny Hernandez fills us in on what it takes to be recognised as one of the United States’ best foodie cities, and how they express their history, cultural foundations and welcome through their food fusions.

    • 365 festivals a year. Fiesta San Antonio is 11 official days of parties - but every San Antonian knows the whole of April is fair game. And come October, the city hosts the largest Día de los Muertos celebration in the United States. Plus, 363 other festivals - yes, really - throughout the year.

  • Far from the mega-ships and endless buffets of mainstream cruising, UnCruise Adventures takes travellers somewhere altogether wilder — remote coastlines, glacier-carved bays and untouched jungle waterways that can only be reached by small vessels.

In this episode of Wanderlust: Off the Page, host Aaron Millar sits down with Captain Dan Blanchard, master mariner, back-country guide and the beating heart behind UnCruise Adventures, for a conversation full of bear encounters, whale-side kayaking and a skincare tip you won't find at any spa.

Adopted by the Tlingit tribe of southeast Alaska, Dan brings a deep respect for indigenous culture and the land to everything UnCruise does. His philosophy is simple: follow nature's clock, not your own. No two voyages are ever the same.

From the earliest days of the province to the present time, strong women have been influential in shaping Canada’s Alberta into the forward-thinking, thriving place it has become. And in this episode of Wanderlust: Off the Page, we’ll be hearing from two of the best.

Matricia Brown, from Warrior Women, will be sharing stories of her Indigenous culture and heritage. Karen Anderson, from Alberta Food Tours, will be taking us on a delicious tour of the region. And our very own Lyn Hughes, Founding Editor of Wanderlust, will be sharing some of her favourite experiences in Alberta as well.

From its Indigenous Peoples and Western culture to a mouthwatering food scene and legacy of pioneering women, this conversation makes it clear why Alberta was named ‘World’s Most Desirable Region’ in 2025’s Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards.

In today’s episode, Wanderlust’s North America Editor, Jacqui Agate, takes us on the inaugural journey, following the tracks deep into the culture, history and landscapes of the American South.

  • When it comes to travel, it’s often the moments that stop you in your tracks that stay with you forever. In Kruger National Park, those moments come thick and fast — from tracking wildlife on foot to watching leopards prowl from a swimming pool.

Today, we’re heading deep into one of Africa’s greatest wilderness areas to explore two very different but beautifully complementary ways to experience Kruger.

First, Jeremy Mabena, CEO of the Motsamayi Tourism Group, takes us to Kruger Shalati – The Train on the Bridge, one of the most unique places to stay anywhere in the world. Suspended above the Sabie River on a historic railway bridge, Kruger Shalati blends pioneering rail heritage with modern design, soulful luxury and a strong commitment to community empowerment.

Then, we leave the comfort of the train behind and head out on foot with Alex van der Heever, an expert tracker and director at Kruger Untamed. Alex introduces us to a wilder, more immersive safari — seasonal canvas camps, walking safaris, and learning the ancient art of tracking lions, buffalo and other wildlife through one of the most intact ecosystems on the planet.

This episode is a journey into raw wilderness, deep connection, and the people working to protect Kruger for generations to come.

    Highlights include:

Waking up on a century-old railway bridge that once carried some of the earliest visitors into Kruger National Park, and has now been reimagined as one of Africa’s most unique safari lodgesLearning what it’s like to track lions on foot, and why tracking is one of humanity’s oldest sciences.Understanding how walking safaris change the way we see wildlife and ourselves, shifting the focus from sightings to connection and awareness.Exploring how both lodges support local communities through training, employment and conservation.Finding out one of the best Kruger National Park itineraries that blends authentic luxury with immersive adventure, and finding the inspiration for your next big trip.

  • The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railway is more than just a scenic ride. It’s a journey back in time. Founded in 1880, this mountain railroad was first set up to ferry workers from the wild west town of Durango to the mines of the San Juan Mountains, and has been in continuous operation since then.

In today’s episode, travel writer James Ruddy is going to take us on a journey, riding the steam locomotive from the old mining town of Silverton, 914 metres back down to the high desert plains of the Four Corners region.

Following the course of the Animas River, the tracks wind through thick pine forests, teetering on the edge of razor-thin cliffs beneath towering 4,267-metre peaks. Widely recognised as one of the most scenic train rides in America, and powered entirely by steam, its story mirrors the story of the West, and for those who want to catch a glimpse of what life was like back then there are few pieces of living history more authentic than this.

Afterwards, Jeff Johnson, the General Manager of the railroad, will fill us in on its history, and the local secrets of what to do in the town of Durango at the end of the line. We’ll even grab a bite in the Diamond Belle Saloon where you can eat next to a 100-year-old bullet hole in the bar.

But that’s not all, round the corner from Durango is one of America’s most fascinating national parks: Mesa Verde. Home of the ancestral pueblo people between 600 and 1300 CE, we’ll visit the spectacular cliff dwellings where they lived in villages hewn from the rock face.

All aboard for a journey back in time on the most beautiful train ride in America.
