June has multiple observances focusing on children and child rights, including International Children’s Day, International Day of the African Child, and World Day Against Child Labor. So, we had a chat with Joy Katunge Matheka, an Advocate of the High Court and a Children’s Law expert.
Ms. Katunge scooped the Civil Society Lawyer of the Year Award during the 2021 Nairobi Legal Awards, owing to her contribution to child protection activities. She shares her journey of grace into child protection law (which she considers her true calling) while unpacking the scope of children’s rights and her experiences practicing law in CSOs. Additionally, she highlights the strides the Kenyan government has made in upholding child protection, and what lawyers can do to promote children’s rights in their spheres of influence.

The church is arguably among the oldest institutions in Kenya, yet there is a gap in its utilization of legal services. In this podcast, we focus on the church as a growing area of practice and interview two advocates, Sr. Trizah Muthoni and Myron Mukuna, who are pioneers in this area.

Robert is an award-winning lawyer with a personality that he is not afraid to show in his different fields. He was recently named the Young Lawyer of the year in the fourth edition of the Nairobi Legal Awards. This was the first time a private consultant had won this award. He is also a content creator who has had his TikTok videos aired on national television. Interestingly, Robert has been able to use his social media following to put out legal alerts on “Interesting Legal facts in Kenya”, a series that has amassed over a hundred thousand views across his social media platforms. Robert has previously worked with Uber Kenya Limited as a partnerships specialist

Our first guest is Hon Magistrate Caroline Kendagor who is the Deputy Registrar for Court Annexed Mediation and a Principal magistrate in the Kenyan judiciary. Hon Kendagor is a passionate judicial officer, a pioneer in the field of court-annexed Mediation, and an inspiration to young women everywhere but in particular in her home county of Elgeyo Marakwet.

In this episode of ‘Winning at Law’ we interview Mr. Kevin Mwangi. He is currently a programme officer-redress at the Independent Medico Legal Unit (IMLU). His main areas of practice are in legal analysis, legislative drafting, and public interest litigation.
Mr. Mwangi has amassed expertise in law reform, democratic governance, and constitutionalism at national and regional levels. His work has seen him awarded by the Law Society of Kenya- Nairobi Corporate Lawyer of the Year 2020.
He also currently sits as an Expert Member at the African Union division working on Human Rights the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights
