We are back with our next edition of the WCPE Book Club. This month, we are looking at Wonder Woman: Historia from DC Comics. Released in 2021 and 2022, the three-issue series was written by Kelly Sue DeConnick with art from Phil Jimenez, Gene Ha, and Nicola Scott. We are given a fresh take on the origin of the Amazons and how Hippolyta came to be the Queen. We also get a fresh take on the story, with friend of the show Bill Schmidt sitting in with us for this discussion. Jerry and John are recording this on the road this weekend from Tremendicon. We are two weeks away from discussing our next WCPE Book Club selection, Wonder Woman Historia from DC Comics. If you want to join us for that discussion, send us a note. Last week saw a surprise announcement from Kickstarter's credit card processor, Stripe. Turns out they no longer want to process purchases for items in the NSFW category. This has been a huge discussion all week, and has led to some interesting pushback. HOWEVER, after we recorded this episode, Kickstarter issued an apology and said they would continue moving forward with the mature projects. John and Jerry are headed to Tremendicon in Springfield, MO, for the last weekend of May. We will do a live podcast recording, host some panels, and represent the Hero Initiative as we always do. We are getting caught up after last week's Book Club discussion, and we are already working on next month's selection of Wonder Woman Historia from DC Comics. If you want to join us for that discussion, send us a note. A day after we recorded episode 618, we learned of the passing of writer Gerry Conway. Conway was part of the wave of new creators joining comics in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He quickly made his mark, taking over writing chores on Amazing Spider-Man from Stan Lee. Along the way, he helped co-create characters like the Punisher, Firestorm, Power Girl, Ms. Marvel, and many others. Is anyone getting mixed messages from Marvel Comics? A while back, a message went out from senior editorial that they were scaling back events, yet all of last week's Comic Giveaway Day books were intros to upcoming events in Avengers, X-Men, Spider-Man and Hulk. Journey with us to the early days of the concept called a mini-series. With four issues, writers and artists had the opportunity to explore characters and concepts that might not easily fit into an ongoing monthly title. For example, our choice for this month's book club is Hercules, the 1982 series from creator Bob Layton and Marvel Comics. Taking place some time in the future, Hercules is sent to space by his father, Zeus, to find humility. He may not find the humility, but he does save a kidnapped maiden, protect a planet from going missing, and drops some drugs into Galactus's wine glass. Sounds like a good read to us! So, what did everyone do last weekend? For the guys of the Worst Comic Podcast Ever, well, we manned the Hero Initiative table at Planet Comicon. We set up at Boulevard Brewery for a drink and draw fundraiser. We hosted five panels with the likes of Dan Mora, Adam Kubert, Paul Dini, Chris Claremont, and many more. We did a live podcast panel complete with guest artists. And somehow, we even made time to record our next Book Club episode! This time, we are travelling back to the mid-1980s as we revisit the Teen Titans for The Judas Contract, where the Titans discovered a traitor on their team, Jericho signs up for the team (see what I did there!), and Dick Grayson finally decides on a new costumed identity. Written by Marv Wolfman with art by George Perez, this is THE Teen Titans story to read. Recorded on the con floor, Jerry, John, and Cullen are joined by loyal listener Eric Haar as we dissect this storyline. Look what Wednesday has given you! A brand-spankin' new episode of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! The big book of the week has to have been DC KO #5, wrapping up the battle between Luthor Superman and Darkseid. And as much as this was an ending to the mini-series, it serves as a teaser for what DC Comics has planned for the rest of 2026. Shocking news out of the Pacific Northwest this week, as Mike Richardson was let go from Dark Horse Comics. While, on the face of it, that was a shock to many people in the industry, reading between the lines shows that this move was bound to happen. We just were not expecting it this week in this manner. Did you see the trailer for Lanterns coming later this year on HBO? We cannot wait to hear Kyle Chandler's southern drawl reciting the Green Lantern oath. ComicsPro, the comic shop retailer network, held its annual meeting last week in Los Angeles. Many of the publishers used the opportunity to showcase new projects and announcements. DC led the way with some absolute - or should we say ABSOLUTE - book news that has everyone ready for more. Speaking of DC Comics, does the publisher have a flagship team book right now?
