  • Phil Svitek is a filmmaker, author, podcaster, xenophile, scholar & 360 Creative Coach, dedicated to empowering aspiring artists.

    Phil's journey started at 15 with documentary editing, leading to groundbreaking work for the Connecticut Hospice. Then on to study at Emerson College. Under the mentorship of Friends‘ executive producer Kevin S. Bright, Phil honed his craft and produced over 500 episodes of Garden Girl TV (hired by his professor, Robert Patton-Spruill).

    Post-college, Phil connected with fellow Emerson alumna Maria Menounos, leading to his role as editor and co-producer for Adventures of Serial Buddies. When Maria and her partner, Keven Undergaro, launched AfterBuzz TV, Phil stepped in as Chief Operating Officer, spearheading digital production of 150+ weekly shows, resulting in a staggering 70,000+ episodes.

    As of late, Phil has expanded his creative horizons, venturing into web series, music videos, films (from shorts to features), books, documentaries, podcasts, and TV pilots. The list of people, brands, and companies that Phil has worked with boasts prestigious names, including The GRAMMYs, Goop, Maria Shriver, Wheelhouse, Girl Boss, Yoga Girl, Elise Loehnen, Sex with Emily, Jemele Hill, Revolt TV, DJ Richard Vission, Sweet Taboo, and many others.

  • Jay Calhoun and Lasana Hotep of Akoben Cinema, sit down with Writers Unscripted to discuss their process of independent film making. Listen in to hear how they got their latest film in Sundance!

    Jay D. Calhoun is a seasoned cinematographer and director dedicated to telling stories that make a difference. Jay has worked on major motion pictures like Mario Van Peebles 'BAADASSSSS!' (2004 Sony Classics) and MTV's TUPAC: RESURRECTION (1997 Paramount). He's directed several magazine shows, commercial packages for Fox, CBS and NBC affiliates, live sports, holiday parades and award winning documentaries.

    Lasana Omar Hotep is an educator, filmmaker and entrepreneur committed to eradicating inequities in society. As an educator, Lasana has taught at the primary level and has served as an administrator at the community college and university levels. As an essayist and writer, he has contributed to several publications including Be A Father to Your Child: Real Talk from Black Men of the Hip-Hop Generation (Soft Skull 2008), The Black Male Handbook: A Blueprint for Life (Atira 2008), and Icon of Black America (Greenwood 2011). He is also the co-author of Minding the Obligation Gap in Community Colleges and Beyond (Peter Lang 2020) and co-editor of the White Educators Guide to Equity (Peter Lang 2023).

    As a filmmaker he has executive produced several projects illuminating Black life throughout the diaspora. Hotep has served as the executive producer of the award-winning short, White Mirror, directed by Taj Kokayi and the forthcoming He Looked Like A Postcard starring Jessica Care Moore and directed by Qasim Basir. He has also served as an executive producer of Basir's To Live and Die and Live which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. Hotep is also producing the documentary Ghana: We Are Here directed by Charles Opong chronicling a African-American educators summit hosted in Cape Coast, Ghana in 2022.

    As C.E.O., Founder, and namesake of Tina Farris Tours, Tina Farris continues to not only facilitate record-breaking tours for GRAMMY® Award-winning generational superstars, but she also fuels the execution of historic cultural moments everywhere from The Super Bowl and The World Cup to The Kennedy Center and Global Citizen Festival in South Africa. Her current tour management roster spans longstanding clients The Roots as well as Chris Rock, Steve Lacy, The Internet, and Syd. Billboard, Essence, Revolt, The Root, and more have chronicled her career thus far, while Pollstar touted her as “Top Tour Manager 2019” and among its “2022 Women of Live.”

    Simultaneously, she has expanded into the world of film and television. She notably created the upcoming series Tour for STARZ (based on her journey) and will complete the Peter Stark Producer’s Program at University of Southern California in Spring 2023.
