  • For over 12 years, Nike (NKE) has partnered and collaborated with the NFL as the exclusive provider of uniforms and apparel for all 32 teams in the league. Earlier this week the sportswear giant announced they will be extending their contract with the NFL through 2038.
On this week’s episode of Yahoo Finance Sports Report, host Joe Pompliano breaks down the significance of this NFL partnership and why it’s a win for Nike, especially with the new CEO Elliott Hill — who entered the role in October 2024 — at the helm of this deal.
“[Hill] has only been on the job for a few months now, but he specifically said he wanted athletes to be at the center of everything they do,” Pompliano says. “That includes sports and sports leagues like the NFL. So this is a great sign for Nike.”
Pompliano is also joined by combat sports journalist and host of The Ariel Helwani Show, Ariel Helwani, to discuss the world of MMA (mixed martial arts), especially the growth of UFC. Helwani attributes a lot of it to the UFC's media rights deal with ESPN that began in 2019. UFC is currently owned by TKO Group Holdings (TKO), with Dana White continuing to lead the combat sports promoter as CEO and president.
“When ESPN is in business with an entity, they start to cover them and promote them a lot more. So they'll be on the ticker, they'll be on dot com, all that stuff, and more,” Helwani says. “When they really want to put the muscle and the machine behind it, it changes in a massive way.”

  • What a week to be a New York Mets fan! Sources told ESPN the team from Queens signed Juan Soto from the Yankees to a 15-year, $765 million contract, which is the most expensive deal in league history. This would break the record for most expensive contract, a record previously held by the Los Angeles Dodgers after they signed Shohei Ohtani last season for $700 million over the course of 10 years.
On this week’s episode of Yahoo Finance Sports Report, host Joe Pompliano gets into all the finer details of this massive contract negotiation and why this is such a big deal for the New York Mets.
Pompliano is also joined by Jess Smith, president of the Golden State Valkyries, to discuss what it’s like building a professional sports team from the ground up, the WNBA expansion draft that took place earlier this week, and what the league needs to do to take the next step to continue its growth.
“It’s everything,” Smith says. “The media deal is a huge component of the continued visibility, produced games, etc. We’re going to see these athletes. Their individual likeness is just continuing to grow exponentially on top of the talent that’s going to be coming into the league for the foreseeable future as people are already watching and taking note of the next potential draftees coming into the WNBA and taking the court against legacy players people have been watching for many years. But most importantly, it’s consumers. Consumers are the ones who have pushed this growth.”

  • On this week’s episode of Yahoo Finance Sports Report, host Joe Pompliano analyzes the ratings from the NFL’s 2024 Thanksgiving Day games, specifically the Dallas Cowboys versus the New York Giants, and explains what was so particular about this match.
The Cowboys vs. Giants game, which aired on Fox (FOX), averaged 38.5 million viewers during the broadcast. This is projected to rank as the most-watched NFL telecast this season, according to Fox Sports PR. What makes this so unique is the game itself was that “It was two of the worst starting quarterbacks [playing] in the league today,” Pompliano says. “Both backup quarterbacks for the Giants and Cowboys with Drew Lock and Cooper Rush played and the game wasn’t very exciting.”
Even the Miami Dolphins and Green Bay Packers game had high viewership with 26.6 million, according to NBC Sports PR.
Later on in the show, Pompliano breaks down the significance of General Motors (GM) joining F1 and Bluestone Equity Group Managing Partner Bobby Sharma, joins the show to discuss investing in sports.

  • Who knew betting on the NFL would cost DraftKings (DKNG) $250 million? On this week’s episode of Yahoo Finance Sports Report, host Joe Pompliano takes a look at the sports betting giant and breaks down why it took a financial hit at the expense of bettors taking massive wins.
In their recent earnings report, DraftKings announced that they revised their 2024 fiscal guidance due to NFL game bets going in favor of bettors. Pompliano says it’s not something DraftKings should worry about long term as they’re “sort of an ebb and flow with betting where sometimes the favorites go on a hot streak and sometimes the underdogs do as well.” However, he advises it “is certainly something that we need to be watching out for because the vig that DraftKings was seeing on these bets was not enough to make up for the loss on the NFL bets.”
Losses from football aside, DraftKings CEO Jason Robins is optimistic about the future of the company, recently telling Yahoo finance, "2025's going to be an even bigger year for us."
Commercial sports betting has become a multi-billion dollar industry that is continuing to grow. According to the American Gaming Association, its year-to-date revenue reached $8.36 billion through August alone, which is a 30.4% increase from the same period last year.
Plus, PFL founder and co-owner Donn Davis, joins the show this week to discuss MMA, media rights, and the growth of the fighter’s league.

  • The 2024-2025 NCAA basketball season began earlier this week, and now that these student-athletes are back on the court, there's a lot to pay attention to. On this week's Yahoo Finance Sports Report, host Joe Pompliano breaks down the top three things viewers should pay attention to this season.
First up, Duke University freshman Cooper Flagg. Not only is the 17-year-old, 6-foot-9-inch athlete one of the top players in the league, but the star is raking it in off the court, already signing partnerships with brands like New Balance and Gatorade.
Pompliano is also keeping an eye on the women’s teams and the new era of female basketball players. Top names like Paige Bueckers and Juju Watkins look to build on the massive impact Caitlin Clarke had on NCAA women's basketball viewership last year.
Plus, NASCAR President Steve Phelps joins the show to discuss the racing empire’s historic media rights deal and the benefits of teaming up with various networks and streaming platforms.

  • With the NBA in the midst of tipping off their 2024-2025 season, eyes are on the Los Angeles Clippers, but not entirely for the reasons you’d expect. Chatter around the Clippers’ arena, the Intuit (INTU) Dome, has taken off following their first home game last week versus the Phoenix Suns.
This week on Yahoo Finance Sports Report, host Joe Pompliano breaks down everything you need to know about the $2 billion privately funded arena that opened this past August and why it has been generating so much buzz. Between its amenities, technology, and section of fan seating dubbed ‘The Wall,’ talk of the arena is going viral due to rave reviews from attendees, fans, and even athletes themselves.
Plus, Andrew Brandt, Moorad Center for the Study of Sports Law Executive Director, joins the show this week to discuss the NFL’s rumored talks of expanding the season, plans to go international, and what all that means for investors.

  • There is a ton of money surrounding the 2024 World Series. With the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees kicking off the coveted playoff series this Friday night on Fox (FOX), the hype over both teams is sure to generate plenty of buzz (and revenue) for the network as well as the MLB.
This week on Yahoo Finance Sports Report, host Joe Pompliano goes in-depth about the World Series and why, specifically, the Dodgers vs. Yankees match will likely bring in massive numbers. Not only do these teams have the two highest payrolls in the MLB, but they also play in the two largest media markets in the country (Los Angeles and New York City), and have two of the most famous players in the world in Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani.
“If you’re Major League Baseball or Fox Sports, who is going to be broadcasting this World Series, you could not be happier with the outcome,” Pompliano says.
Plus, we've got Jordan Rogers, a sports marketer, joining the show later to discuss the new landscape over at Nike (NKE) with its latest leadership changes, what it means for the sportswear brand, and how it could impact your portfolio.
