What a week to be a New York Mets fan! Sources told ESPN the team from Queens signed Juan Soto from the Yankees to a 15-year, $765 million contract, which is the most expensive deal in league history. This would break the record for most expensive contract, a record previously held by the Los Angeles Dodgers after they signed Shohei Ohtani last season for $700 million over the course of 10 years.
On this week’s episode of Yahoo Finance Sports Report, host Joe Pompliano gets into all the finer details of this massive contract negotiation and why this is such a big deal for the New York Mets.
Pompliano is also joined by Jess Smith, president of the Golden State Valkyries, to discuss what it’s like building a professional sports team from the ground up, the WNBA expansion draft that took place earlier this week, and what the league needs to do to take the next step to continue its growth.
“It’s everything,” Smith says. “The media deal is a huge component of the continued visibility, produced games, etc. We’re going to see these athletes. Their individual likeness is just continuing to grow exponentially on top of the talent that’s going to be coming into the league for the foreseeable future as people are already watching and taking note of the next potential draftees coming into the WNBA and taking the court against legacy players people have been watching for many years. But most importantly, it’s consumers. Consumers are the ones who have pushed this growth.”

On this week’s episode of Yahoo Finance Sports Report, host Joe Pompliano analyzes the ratings from the NFL’s 2024 Thanksgiving Day games, specifically the Dallas Cowboys versus the New York Giants, and explains what was so particular about this match.
The Cowboys vs. Giants game, which aired on Fox (FOX), averaged 38.5 million viewers during the broadcast. This is projected to rank as the most-watched NFL telecast this season, according to Fox Sports PR. What makes this so unique is the game itself was that “It was two of the worst starting quarterbacks [playing] in the league today,” Pompliano says. “Both backup quarterbacks for the Giants and Cowboys with Drew Lock and Cooper Rush played and the game wasn’t very exciting.”
Even the Miami Dolphins and Green Bay Packers game had high viewership with 26.6 million, according to NBC Sports PR.
Later on in the show, Pompliano breaks down the significance of General Motors (GM) joining F1 and Bluestone Equity Group Managing Partner Bobby Sharma, joins the show to discuss investing in sports.

Who knew betting on the NFL would cost DraftKings (DKNG) $250 million? On this week’s episode of Yahoo Finance Sports Report, host Joe Pompliano takes a look at the sports betting giant and breaks down why it took a financial hit at the expense of bettors taking massive wins.
In their recent earnings report, DraftKings announced that they revised their 2024 fiscal guidance due to NFL game bets going in favor of bettors. Pompliano says it’s not something DraftKings should worry about long term as they’re “sort of an ebb and flow with betting where sometimes the favorites go on a hot streak and sometimes the underdogs do as well.” However, he advises it “is certainly something that we need to be watching out for because the vig that DraftKings was seeing on these bets was not enough to make up for the loss on the NFL bets.”
Losses from football aside, DraftKings CEO Jason Robins is optimistic about the future of the company, recently telling Yahoo finance, "2025's going to be an even bigger year for us."
Commercial sports betting has become a multi-billion dollar industry that is continuing to grow. According to the American Gaming Association, its year-to-date revenue reached $8.36 billion through August alone, which is a 30.4% increase from the same period last year.
