Jay wraps the week (and the year) with a fantastic article in the Jan 2025 Harpers Magazine titled âThe Ghosts in the Machineâ [Harpers Magazine]. The article reports Spotifyâs internal program aimed at filling âbackground musicâ playlists with licensed sound-alike content that costs much less that the royalties paid to streaming artists. It re-raises a familiar question on the show, can the economics of the music industry ever result in a system that benefits and is fair to its artists.

Jay is out this week rehearsing with the Ken Demith Collection so friend of the show Keith Grasso is sitting in, and heâs bringing a substantial amount of, much needed, holiday cheer. An accomplished musician, bandleader, record producer, songwriter, composer, arranger, and film and television producer, Jones won 28 Grammy Awards and many other accolades in his 70 year career. August of 2023 was a bad month for the Internet Archive. The nonprofit digital library website, most famous for its Wayback Machine, lost a case against book publishers regarding their âEmergency Library Projectâ launched during the pandemic. The same day the case was decided in District Court, UMG & Sony Music filed a copyright infringement lawsuit over the Archiveâs âGreat 78 Project.â The project is an unprecedented effort to digitize obsolete 78 rpm records. Maximum damages, if the Archive were to lose, would top $621 million. Let the âBattle for the Soul of the Internetâ commence.

Greg is excited to announce that The Resilient, in order to further their mission helping veterans navigate adversity, launched The Reborn Project (rebornproject.org). The initiative aims to identify individuals and groups that exemplify hope, raise awareness, and empower veterans to rise from adversity. The project kicks off with the Leave No Man Behind Tour, an eight show tour in 2025.

The album is raising money to cover the costs of Jesseâs medical bills, following the rare spinal stroke that he suffered last year.
