The way we respond to people around us on all levels is very important in building relationships. Understanding of attachment styles and strategies when working with people may help us develop better responses to during our practice. I was very fortunate to be joined by Lydia Guthrie (Twitter: @Lydia_Guthrie), a trainer in attachment and relationship styles who is also training to be a systemic psychotherapist

Episode 34 – Prison Mental Health OT
In this episode, I am joined by Charlotte Wise & Katie Vaneker to discuss their roles working in mental health teams within a prison. We discuss what a typical day looks like and the challenges around this and the difficulty in maintaining an occupation focused practice in a highly restricted environment. Katie also shares her experience of having spent a month in a Nepalese prison. This is the first episode of the mini-series exploring the role and impact of occupational therapy within the criminal justice system.

Episode 39 – OT Service In Prison: Integrated Support Unit
On this week’s episode, I am in conversation with Charlotte French (@charfrenchOT), an Occupational Therapist in a remand prison in the North East of England about her role in an Integrated Support Unit which aims to support people experiencing mental health difficulties. We discuss what the unit looks like and the interventions and assessments she completes with the people she works with in order to support them. We also discuss some of the challenges with transitions away from the unit and the potential difficulties this may throw up.

Episode 40 – Prison & Sensory Approaches
On this week’s episode, I am in conversation with Gisele Craswell, an Occupational Therapist based in Canada about the use of sensory approaches in prison environment. We discuss the sensory experiences of people in prison and the possible impact on functioning. We also discuss what the evidence says about sensory interventions and mental health, the challenges in providing sensory interventions in prisons and Gisele provides advice for OTs based in prison or forensic units who want to develop a sensory pathway. Gisele states that she is more than happy to answer any questions or have conversations with OTs about this area of practice so if you would like to get in touch, please drop me an email and I will link you up with her. Crystal is currently an associate professor at Dalhousie University in Canada and has spent most of her career working and researching the area Occupational Therapy, mental health and criminal justice system. In this episode, we discuss topics such as ageing in prison, working in and out of institutional systems, challenging perspectives and development of a Justice Based Occupational Therapy Network.

Episode 48 – Conversation with Sue Baptiste
In this episode, I am joined by Sue Baptiste who is a well-respected Occupational Therapist. She has contributed extensively to the profession through her work with the WFOT. She is recognised as one of the founding members of the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure. She has also contributed to Occupational Therapy literature with work in books and journal articles. In this episode, we have a conversation about different topics including her interest in Problem Based Learning, chronic pain, transitioning into retirement and also an upcoming publication about the global outlook for the profession.
