  • Mel provides this re-edit of episode 18 about Gestational diabetes screening in preparation for episode 99 with Lily Nichols about real food for gestational diabetes. This episode addresses the inaccuracies of gestational diabetes screening and how we still don't have good research evidence on how to diagnose diabetes in pregnancy, this pairs well with episode 99 with Lily Nichols.

  • When a baby is in a breech (head up) position for labour and birth, women are faced with unique challenges of care provider incompetence and fear. Many clinicians don’t know how to or refuse to attend vaginal breech births. They cite increased risk and danger, but is this correct? Is it more dangerous to give birth to your breech baby vaginally or by caesarean section? Dr Rixa Freeze, president of Breech without Borders talks us through the research and we discuss the concept of never being able to eliminate risk, we just move it upstream. It’s up to women to decide which risks they are willing to accept, and it’s up to care providers to be skilled enough to be able to care for women according to the womans' preference.

This is the second breech episode for the Great birth Rebellion, the first was with Dr Andrew Bissits (episode 26).

Midwife or Ob? Public or private? What are doulas? How can a student midwife help you have a positive birth? What about your birth options - does your hospital offer baths or water? Or perhaps you know you want an epidural or caesarean - who is best to provide your care then?

So many questions right?! But don't worry - this course is here to arm you with the answers.

I designed this course because I want you to have all of the information on your different care providers, but also tools to use during the first trimester to help you to feel better, and to get through this often challenging time.

As a midwife working in public and private hospitals I have insider knowledge on our maternity care options in Australia - and I share all of this knowledge with you in this course!

Over five modules I take you through the common physical and emotional changes women experience in the first trimester and how you can support your body to feel better, important lifestyle considerations to implement in early pregnancy - plus we go in depth into how to choose the right care provider for you.

  • In today’s episode Maude takes us through her two pregnancies and births. She moved interstate in her first pregnancy, registered with her local public hospital and had a planned caesarean because her baby was breech. She talks at length about her positive birth experience and the challenges of breastfeeding and being a stay at home mum. When she fell pregnant with her second baby, she accessed psychological support to assist with the transition from one to two babies and it really set her up for a smooth pregnancy. She knew she wanted a VBAC so she takes us through what she did to prepare and how the birth unfolded.

  • Sometimes we hear so much about birth - all kinds of births - that we can forget it is a normal, biological process. In today’s episode, Emily’s experience reiterates the ease of physiological birth - both at home with a single baby, and in hospital with twins. She is honest from the get-go when she admits that she wasn’t even sure she wanted to be a parent but we follow her journey of acceptance, the grief of misscarriage, the trust in her body and the preparation she did to lean into her intuition and birth all three babies with a profound sense of faith in her breath and body. If you’re currently in a period of doubt and fear (both very normal experiences in pregnancy), you’ll find so much comfort in this episode.

In this episode Katie takes Rachel into a conversation about why the nipple shield topic gets Katie’s knickers in a Twist.

    We discuss:

The history of their use from1500s to present day How the research might not be telling the right story? Why are they so controversial? We ask do nipple shields affect how much milk the baby can take out of the breast? When might be a good reason to use a nipple shield – way more reasons than you probably think! How do you get the right fit, and who are we fitting the shield for, the baby’s mouth or the mum’s nip? Do babies attach differently when they use one? And we discuss how to wean off from using a nipple shield.

All this and tons more packed in to one episode for your eager lug’ols.

In this episode, Katie takes Rachel behind the scenes for an in-depth exploration of donor milk—an intriguing topic that might just challenge everything you thought you knew about this practice.

I have to caveat that some of the information in this episode is possibly going to get your knickers in a twist though – do we have any episode that don’t?!

    We’ll be discussing:

The history of milk banking Are we seeing different health outcomes when using donor milk compared to a mother’s own milk? Are there differences between donor and mothers milk that we should know aboutWhat about informal, unpasteurised, milk sharing? Is this also happening in the hospital settings as well? And have you ever heard the term “milk sibling” before?

I'll also dive into whether we need to rethink our approach to milk when caring for vulnerable infants. Plus, Rachel asks me about the future of milk banking—where is this practice headed?

  • Today we’re joined by Jo, a Forensic Accountant turned Psychic Medium, sharing her four birth stories. Growing up in a family of eight, Jo was surrounded by babies, and hospital births were simply the norm. Her first birth experience was profoundly shaped by her mother-in-law’s illness and passing, which, unbeknownst to her at the time, would mark her initiation into the world of mediumship.

Today, Jo opens up about her hospital births, which she once saw as positive, yet were shaped by a cascade of interventions - inductions, episiotomies, NICU stays, and even an epidural injury. It was through the gift of mediumship and learning to trust her intuition that Jo realised all the wisdom she needed to guide her through her fourth pregnancy and birth was already within her. Jo's journey is a powerful reminder of the innate and sacred wisdom that we all carry within us.

  • If you need to hear a positive NICU breastfeeding story, this is it! Sarah shares her experience with premature prelabour rupture of membranes (PPROM) and the NICU journey that followed the birth of her baby at 32 weeks. She started antenatal expressing in labour and continued hand-expressing in the days after before switching to a hospital-grade pump. She had plenty of milk, triple-fed and used a nipple-shield alongside navigating an oversupply (she could pump 400ml in a single session!). She saw a variety of lactation consultants in the first few months and emphasises how important it is to find the right person for you who also has the right level of expertise for your situation.
