This week, we’re diving into the psychology of biophilic design - why we find it so appealing, the evolutionary basis for preferring certain landscapes to others, and the reasons we fear certain natural elements like snakes and spiders. We also chat about the social experiences we find in nature, like camping with friends and sharing stories around a fire, and the ways in which climate change complicates our relationship with the natural world.
Our guest is Dr. Judith Heerwagen, a psychologist who specializes in the behavioral, social, and health impacts of buildings. Dr. Heerwagen has worked extensively on the psychology of biophilic design and is the co-editor of Biophilic Design: the Theory, Science and Practice of Bringing Buildings to Life which won the 2009 Publishers Award in architecture and urban planning. She is also the recipient of 2014 Design for Humanity Award from the American Society of Interior Designers.

I’ve got a great chat for you today… My guest for episode this episode is an endurance swimmer, a Churchill Fellow on a mission to improve support for Children after suicide, a swim coach and a really inspiring woman. She took up swimming later in life - deciding to swim the channel with virtually a year’s notice having only ever swam a kilometre before. We talk about swimming through grief, self-worth and loosing consciousness through jelly fish stings. When it came to editing this one, I just couldn’t leave any of it out really, so this is a long one, virtually unabridged… it was so rich in content and really connected with me on many levels and I hope it will you too. The offshore wind sector is growing exponentially, with over 205 GW of new offshore wind capacity forecasted to be installed by the end of this decade. But, we need to make sure that there is a workforce in place, especially in emerging markets, in order to deliver this capacity and deliver on offshore wind’s incredible potential. Skills, safety, and diversity are three key factors that need to be considered in order to ensure the health and safety of workers, secure the long-term sustainability of the sector, create thousands of local jobs, and inclusively power the global energy transition so it benefits citizens across the globe.
