  • What does it mean to be religious? It means almost everything because religions deal with the whole of human life and death. For thousands of years people have searched for the meaning and truth of their own nature and of the universe, and religions, which deal with the whole of human life and death, are the result.

  • The word testament in the expression "New Testament" refers to a new covenant that Christians believe completes or fulfils the Mosaic covenant or the old covenant that the national god of Israel made with the people of Israel on Mount Sinai through Moses, described in the books of the Old Testament. Christians traditionally view this new covenant as being prophesied in the Hebrew Bible's Book of Jeremiah. • After the death of Jesus, his followers believed he rose from the dead, and the community they formed eventually became the early Christian Church. Christian doctrines include the beliefs that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, was born of a virgin named Mary—wife of Joseph—performed miracles of healing and restoration, preached a message of repentance, died at the approximate age of 33 by crucifixion as a sacrifice to achieve atonement for sin, rose from the dead, and ascended into Heaven, from where he will return.

The four canonical or sacred Gospels—that tradition attributes to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, are the primary sources for the life and message of Jesus. • The Gospels are the primary sources of historical information about the man from Nazareth and of the religious movement he founded. Gospels, mean ‘glad tidings’ or ‘good news’ in Greek. These religious Gospels recount the life, ministry, crucifixion and resurrection of a Jew named Jesus who spoke Aramaic. Biblical scholarship regards the Gospels to be the literary manifestation of oral traditions that originated during the life of a historical Jesus and are a type of ancient biography, a genre which was concerned with providing examples for readers to emulate while preserving and promoting the subject’s reputation and memory. • Sailing upstream, Jacques Cartier reached the end of navigation at a large island in the St. Lawrence River. Here he found another Amerindian village, called Hochelaga, on the site of the present city of Montreal, Canada. From the height behind it, to which he gave the name Mont Real—better known today as Mont Royal or Mount Royal in English—he could see the foaming Lachine Rapids blocking the way to the upper waters of the St. Lawrence.

  • First known European penetration of the interior of the continent through the St. Lawrence River gateway took place in 1535, when Jacques Cartier returned as leader of a new expedition. Pressing upstream in three small vessels, he reached the Amerindian village of Stadacona, near the present site of the city of Quebec, Canada. At Stadacona, Cartier and his followers passed a bitter winter with the help of chief Donnacona. Many of his party died from cold and scurvy before he could set sail for France the following spring.
