  • In 1993, Fitzroy were both a club teetering on the brink of extinction and a senior side entering its prime. Off-field dramas were many, but on the field the Lions were among the most watchable sides in the AFL, driven by the likes of Paul Roos, Alastair Lynch, Paul Broderick and the inimitable Doc Whieldon. As a young coach, Robert Shaw was in the midst of the excitement of a year in which the team came close to playing finals while also wrestling with the looming spectre of the AFL's economic rationalism. He spoke to us about this, Fitzroy's part in The Greatest Season That Was.

  • Just a month out from the 1993 season North Melbourne were in tatters, the so-called next big things had stalled. A bad 1992 and now a 147 point thrashing in the Pre-Season Fosters Cup by the Crows saw coach Wayne Schimmelbusch sacked with just weeks until the season proper started. So how did a club that had no money, no coach and no captain turn it all around within 6 weeks to be top of the AFL ladder and the new glamour team of 1993 . We talk to North Melbourne football supreme Greg Miller about the events of 1993 and how its legacy turned North Melbourne into the team of the 90s.

  • The Greatest Season That Was: 93 documents our contention that in 1993, footy was never better. Hosted by Adam Collins, Dan Brettig and Shannon Gill, this series is an in-depth exploration of one amazing season.  Why 1993? It was an outlier for many reasons, a ridiculously even season of record scoring that was impossible to predict, in turn delivering a host of seminal moments that still echo through the modern era.  All this happened with the backdrop of a league that had gone through disastrous teething issues. But 1993 vindicated the vision that led to the national competition. After spluttering on the runway for years, the AFL truly took off and never looked back.  Thanks for listening.
