This is a fascinating episode that takes up thinkers that the podcast has covered before—the Koch brothers, Austrian economists like Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich Hayek, and others—but from a different angle: that of the entrepreneurial work ethic. Historian Erik Baker's superb book on the topic, Make Your Own Job: How the Entrepreneurial Work Ethic Exhausted America, offers a genuinely absorbing tour of this most American of ideologies, one that has emerged again and again, in various guises and in different circumstances, to reconcile workers to the contradictions of the U.S. economy, especially the shortage of jobs that has come with its many "innovations" and changes. What are the historical and even spiritual sources of the entrepreneurial work ethic, and what ideological needs does it serve for bosses and managers? Why is it so seductive to Americans? How does it relate to deeply American impulses relating to responsibility, guilt, and shame? In what ways did the entrepreneurial work ethic serve U.S. aims during the Cold War? And how has it endured in our age of Silicon Valley tech overlords and Donald Trump, entrepreneur, being re-elected? We take up these questions and many more in this rich conversation.

Nate Petroski is an off-the-grid recluse who has a girlfriend he met online, millions of fans all across the country, and a bespoke beard-oil brand. Something isn’t adding up here. In this finale episode, Hannah and Maia step into the wilderness of the internet’s very own homesteading community. These influencers make a living documenting their alternative, self-sufficient lifestyles. And, in an increasingly volatile political and economic climate that has many people wishing to go back to basics, it’s extremely lucrative. But is being an internet influencer antithetical to the tenets of off-grid living? Or does it make it more community-oriented than the lifestyle allows? Listen to find out! Tangents include: a divisive Oscars season, Hannah becoming a female pickup artist, and the perplexing contradictions of AmishTok.

One of the biggest podcasts out there right now is The Telepathy Tapes. It's topping the podcast charts on both Apple and Spotify's American listings, but it perpetrates an incredibly dangerous idea about people with autism. But none of this is new, and we've seen this kind of trend before.
So it's about time we talked about it. -
Katelyn and Oliver revisit the Netflix/Dave Chappelle controversy with an in-depth interview with the two trans employees most affected by the fallout. Joining the show are B. Pagels-Minor, who was fired by Netflix after helping to organize the company’s trans employee walkout, and Terra Field, who was briefly suspended after a Twitter thread of hers criticizing the company’s decision-making around Chappelle’s special went viral.

It wouldn't be Cancel Me, Daddy if we didn't delve into Dave Chappelle's horrible, new Netflix special "The Closer." Katelyn and Oliver are joined by the one and only Imara Jones of TransLash Media who shares her sharp analysis and insightful perspective on the hateful special who's actually being silenced. The trio discuss how Netflix can't "carbon offset" bigotry, the ways this special puts Black trans women especially at risk, and the problem with hate being profitable.

Wattpad: a literary oasis of the Web 2.0, or a cash cow monopolizing on the infernal musings of a thousand Club Chalamets? In this episode, Hannah and Maia are joined by Youtube superstar Princess Weekes, to ponder the eponymous literary platform; from its gaming origins, to its heyday as a fertile space for burgeoning writers, to what it is now which is… bizarre. Is Wattpad f-cking up our relationship to literature, or should we just be happy that we’re literate at all? How do we critique an institution like Wattpad without punching down at its readers? And how much has the internet affected the kinds of books that are sold to us? These questions and more answered here. Tangents include: Hannah and Maia buying each other “sad broad” snacks, and an extra special shoutout to Regina, Saskatchewan.

The Wiccan Rede is the foundational moral principle of Wicca. As it's one of the larger forms of Witchcraft practiced today, I thought we'd dig into it and understand where it came from, what it means, and why it's important.
-
On this eighth episode of the podcast, we're talking about good old Technopaganism. Well, "Technowitchcraft" is probably the better term, but I'm old and from the 90s. In any case, the point is that there's a lot of ways that technology can be incorporated into Witchcraft, but there are a lot of questions we have to ask along the way.
Or something. -
On this episode of the podcast, the topic is the importance of accepting that we're all ridiculous human beings and that's it's a good thing. Witchcraft should be done with a sense of play, and we should all keep that in mind before we take ourselves too seriously. Because when we take ourselves too seriously, none of us are remotely pleasant to be around. Doing witchcraft by rote isn't the best idea, gatekeeping is bad, and there's probably not a wrong way to do a spell. Unless you like light yourself on fire or something.Try not to do that.

Weebs… and the people who hate them. Japan has always had a distinctive relationship with the West. But ever since it broke out on the global stage with its “gross national cool” - distributing an array of films, shows, video games, and toys the world over, Westerners have taken on a particular fascination with the country. To the point that an entire Western subculture has formed around an interest… or rather obsession, with all things Japanese. In this episode, Hannah and Maia track how the weeb was born - from the radical DIY origins of manga and otaku, to the fedora-wearing white Redditors of today who hump h*ntai body pillows. But the question remains: Is a weeb a person who simply attends anime conventions and enjoys a vast knowledge of Japan, or a gooner with a Japan fetish? OR does this binary really exist at all? Listen to find out.

“Imagine if a document saying all the things that he wants ends up in the wrong hands,” Melissa Nathan—the crisis public relations expert who preserved alleged domestic abuser Johnny Depp’s public image—texted behind the scenes of her latest smear-campaign-for-hire. The New York Times called Nathan’s bluff. publishing the extent of her actor-director client Justin Baldoni’s alleged retaliatory social media operation to turn public sentiment against actress Blake Lively, the target of his alleged workplace sexual harassment on their film “It Ends with Us.”
This week, Katelyn and Christine discuss the coordinated campaign against Lively, perpetrated by our old enemies behind the Amber Heard defamation allegation. The health insurer horror stories haven’t stopped coming in the two weeks since UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed by alleged murderer-turned-folk hero Luigi Mangione. And the ruling class is not having it! Elected officials, corporate CEOs, and the mainstream media with the power to change or buck the system are hell bent on protecting it, at the expense of many more lives.
This week, Katelyn and Christine discuss the sudden, ongoing suppression of free speech, sharing each of their experiences with health insurance, censorship be damned. Their conversation spans UHC’s denials and demands for Christine’s mental health records in 2024 to Kate’s gender-affirming surgeries, which she crammed into one year to meet her deductible under one of the various insurance plans that Americans will have in their lifetime. Thirsty Internet assassin boyfriend memes, of course, rise to the top. And Kate asks Christine to name the greater Italian American—Christopher Columbus, or Luigi Mangione? Tune in for her answer!
