  • In this special episode, Cam and Jen talk with Ed & Melissa from Murder Unscripted, who dive into the decades-old mystery about the disappearance of Ilonka Cann.

On May 25, 1970, 22-year-old Ilonka spoke with her parents in Ohio, excited about coming home for a visit that summer. She never made that trip.

The very next afternoon, she vanished from her rural Pennsylvania farmhouse, leaving behind all her belongings and her 15-month-old son crying alone in his crib.

For decades, searches of the isolated property yielded nothing, while the case took bizarre legal turns regarding her husband's personal life. Finally, after fifty years, a 2024 coroner's inquest changed everything by officially ruling Ilonka’s disappearance a homicide.

  • The UK Midlands is a region steeped in history and folklore, from the ancient Kingdom of Mercia to the birthplace of Shakespeare. But on a freezing, misty day in December 1993, a peaceful village right off the M1 motorway became the backdrop for a living nightmare. While driving past a dirty station wagon parked on a grassy verge near Junction 20, a local witness noticed a passenger sitting bolt upright in the backseat wearing a jet-black dress. It was a sight that made her blood run cold; she knew with absolute certainty that the woman was already dead. What followed was a massive police hunt for a transient predator who used England’s motorways to hide in plain sight, Alun Kyte, the Midlands Ripper.Join Jen and Cam as they discuss 'Monster on the M1: The Murders of Samo Paull & Tracey Turner.'Our team:Listener Discretion by Edward October Research & Writing by Lauretta AllenExecutive Producers Nico & Jesse of The Inky PawprintSources:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7_M0eU6pVk&t=7shttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1hGFRvWqyohttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alun_Kytehttps://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-48254878https://crimeimmemorial.com/2024/09/15/yvonne-coley/https://murderpedia.org/male.K/k/kyte-alun.htmhttps://www.the-independent.com/news/uk/crime/janine-downes-death-police-appeal-b1796190.htmlhttps://crimeimmemorial.com/2024/10/15/gail-whitehouse/https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-shropshire-12297341https://www.westmercia.police.uk/news/west-mercia/news/2021/february/detectives-continue-to-appeal-for-information-into-womans-murder-on-30th-anniversary/https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/uk-news/unsolved-murder-revisited-after-34-31844795https://www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/local-news/missing-coventry-sex-workers-victims-22984273https://lolly-truecrime.medium.com/natalie-pearman-was-16-years-old-when-her-body-was-found-in-a-lay-by-on-ringland-road-norwich-8ba882b288cahttps://www.thetimes.com/uk/law/article/child-abusing-double-killer-suspected-of-other-murders-7t2pjsm73https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-stoke-staffordshire-65556070https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/ac7a330a-afe6-4247-a106-10e59fba8651/episodes/7e1fe6a3-895f-452d-9512-b307a319fbb5/they-walk-among-us---uk-true-crime-midlands-ripper-alun-kyte---part-1 (and also part 2)https://www.newspapers.com/image/719963897/?match=1&terms=Alun%20Kytehttps://www.newspapers.com/image/259073041/?match=2&terms=Alun%20Kytehttps://www.newspapers.com/image/867605363/?match=2&terms=Alun%20Kytehttps://www.newspapers.com/image/808440223/?match=1&terms=Alun%20Kytehttps://www.newspapers.com/image/822427249/?article=a4f38430-aabb-4708-a3fb-f982c5af9186&terms=Alun%20Kytehttps://www.newspapers.com/image/822427249/?article=a4f38430-aabb-4708-a3fb-f982c5af9186&terms=Alun%20Kytehttps://www.newspapers.com/image/719023877/?match=1&terms=Samo%20Paullhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balsall_Heathhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/866507468/?match=8&terms=Samo%20Paullhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/865864192/?match=1&terms=Samo%20Paull https://www.newspapers.com/image/865864423/?match=6&terms=Samo%20Paullhttps://grokipedia.com/page/Alun_Kyte#:~:text=The%201994%20Murders,December%201993.%20%5B9%5D%20Her%20bodyhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/878164808/?article=3ed5a862-86a9-47e0-9de9-0bfce9a53075&terms=%22Tracey%20Turner%22https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murdered_sex_workers_in_the_United_Kingdom Learn more about your ad choices. • In January 1991, 13-year-old Paola Illera arrived home from school and stepped into the elevator of her East Harlem apartment building. She was only moments from her family's 30th-floor apartment, but she never made it upstairs. Hours later, her body was discovered miles from where she was last seen, launching an investigation that would haunt detectives for years.

As fear spread through the neighborhood, investigators searched for answers in a case that seemed to offer few clues. Yet hidden among the evidence was a tiny trace that would eventually help uncover the truth. This week, we examine the murder of Paola Illera, the long hunt for her killer, and the string of crimes that terrorized East Harlem throughout the 1990s.

Join us as we discuss: ‘The Predator of East Harlem: Arohn Kee’ on this week’s episode.

  • Thank you to Kimberly for the request.

Creve Coeur, Missouri, is known for its affluent, charmed lifestyle. It's a kind of safe, quiet suburb where nothing bad ever happens. But in French, Creve Coeur translates to “broken heart,” and thirty-five years ago, that translation became a brutal reality for the family of Elizabeth Mackintosh.

Elizabeth was a brilliant, fiercely independent, and strong-willed 50-year-old nurse from the Scottish Highlands who moved across the world to attend the prestigious Covenant Theological Seminary. She was just weeks away from graduation when her life was violently cut short.

On Monday, March 26, 1990, Elizabeth unlocked the campus chapel at 4:00 AM for her routine cleaning shift. By 7:20 AM, she was found dead inside a restroom. The brutality of the attack shocked the community and baffled investigators.

  • This week’s episode is a little different. Instead of focusing on a single crime, we're diving into an entire criminal organization, one built on loyalty, fear, violence, and an unbreakable code of silence.

It all begins with the disappearance of 19-year-old Breanna Taylor from a quiet Ohio suburb in 2006. At first, her case seemed like another missing-person investigation. But as detectives dug deeper, they uncovered something far more disturbing: a sprawling white supremacist criminal enterprise operating in plain sight.

What started as a search for one missing young woman would eventually expose a network of murder, drug trafficking, racketeering, and corruption, and lead to what federal prosecutors called the largest white supremacist racketeering case in American history.

Join Cam and Jen as we discuss 'The Disappearance That Brought Down a Criminal Empire: Breanna Taylor.'

  • The southeastern shores of Australia are famous for gorgeous beaches, whale watching, and sunny holiday vibes, but in late 1994, the people of Sydney’s Northern Beaches were shocked by two horrific crimes.

It began with a 34-year-old landscape gardener, Stephen Dempsey, who went missing after an impromptu stop at the Deep Creek Reserve. Months later, a gentle father of seven and taxi driver, Ezzedine Bahmad, was brutally murdered during a late-night shift.

Police were left with two separate mysteries until a gruesome discovery in the waters of Pittwater broke both cases wide open. The clues led investigators straight to a 21-year-old local predator and a secret inside a refrigerator.

Join Jen & Cam as they discuss "Natural Born Killer: The Murders of Stephen Dempsey & Ezzedine Bahmad."

  • In the quiet suburb of Cockeysville, Maryland, nothing bad was supposed to happen. Families left their doors unlocked. Neighbors trusted one another. And the Browning family seemed picture perfect.

Fifteen-year-old Nicholas Browning was bright, polite, and dependable, a Boy Scout, a good student, the kind of teenager parents trusted without question. But on a cold February night in 2008, that image would shatter forever.

After being dropped off for what should have been an ordinary sleepover with friends, Nick returned home the next morning to a nightmare scene: his parents, John and Tamara Browning, and his two younger brothers, Benjamin and Gregory, had all been brutally murdered.

What investigators uncovered next would shock an entire community and reveal a darkness hiding behind the facade of an all-American family.

Join Cam and Jen for this episode of Our True Crime Podcast, titled ‘The Sleepover: Browning Family Massacre.’

Be sure to check out the promo for Rogue Transmission from our friend Edward at OctoberpodVHS. • In this month’s special, Cam and Jen talk with Nikki from Serial Napper.

In March 2023, 23-year-old Kiara Agnew left her home in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, to celebrate her birthday in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. It was her very first time leaving Canada.

Less than twelve hours after checking into a luxury five-star resort, the dream vacation was shattered.

Kiara was found beaten to death in the resort's laundry room, with her boyfriend discovered asleep right next to her body.

What the Mexican authorities initially called an "open and shut" case of femicide quickly spiraled into a complex web of legal battles, a shocking "not guilty" verdict, and deeply divided families.

Listen as Nikki helps us unpack a devastating case marked by conflicting timelines, missing surveillance footage, and a family's ongoing fight for answers.

They were certain they knew who took her, but without any physical evidence, the case went completely cold.

Then, in September 2016, history repeated itself. Another young woman, just 21, disappeared after leaving a party with the same man. What followed was a frantic search and a series of dark discoveries in the Missouri brush. Two girls vanished ten years apart, but their stories ended in the exact same place, deep in the Cass County woods.

  • Just after 5:00 p.m. on February 18, 2014, ten-year-old Hailey Owens set out on the short walk home from a friend’s house. What began as an ordinary Tuesday turned horrific when neighbors Carlos and Michelle Edwards watched a tan Ford Ranger pull alongside Hailey. After asking for directions, the driver suddenly grabbed her and dragged her into the truck as she tried to walk away. Carlos Edwards sprinted after the vehicle, nearly reaching Hailey before the truck disappeared down the street, while another neighbor chased the kidnapper and called 911. Michelle managed to provide the police with the license plate as panic swept through the quiet neighborhood. Just doors away, Hailey’s mother, Stacey, was preparing dinner, expecting her daughter home any minute, only to be met instead by flashing police lights, frantic officers, and the horrifying realization that her child had been abducted. As volunteers flooded the streets with flashlights and Hailey’s smiling photo spread across social media, the entire city of Springfield, Missouri, held its breath.

  • This month, we have a talk with Courtney from The Book of the Dead, who joins us to talk about the murder of Sister Tadea Benz and the execution of Johnny Frank Garret.

In October 1981, the quiet city of Amarillo, Texas, was rocked by a crime that felt like a nightmare: the brutal assault and murder of 76-year-old Sister Tadea Benz inside St. Francis Convent. The pressure to catch the killer was on, and the police quickly set their sights on 17-year-old Johnny, who lived across the street.

Johnny Frank Garrett was executed by the state of Texas in 1992, but was he a cold-blooded killer, or a convenient scapegoat?

Don't forget to subscribe to Courtney's podcast, The Book of the Dead. We think you will like her as much as Jen and Cam do.

  • When hunters in Bulltown Swamp discovered the remains of an unidentified woman in late 2022, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was left with a mystery that felt impossible to solve. There were no matching missing person reports, no DNA matches, just a dental implant and a crime scene that looked like an attempt to make a person disappear forever.

Months later, the GBI got the lead they needed when someone recognized the victim from an artist’s rendering that appeared on television.

What they would soon hear would be unbelievable.

  • In the early 1990s, long before his name would be tied to something unthinkable, Scott McLaughlin was already unraveling. Untreated childhood trauma, cognitive struggles, and severe mental illness shaped his life. Suicide attempts. Institutionalizations. Heavy medication. And yet, nothing seemed to stick. The help he received was fleeting.

A decade later, in 2002, his path crossed with Beverly Guenther, a woman who knew hardship in a very different way. Beverly had lived through devastating loss, including the death of her young child, and years of grief that followed. But she fought her way back. She found purpose in her work, her creativity, and her compassion for others. To those who knew her, she was kind, intelligent, and resilient, someone who believed in helping people, even when they were broken.

“She was really turning her life around,” her brother once said.

And then… she met Scott McLaughlin.

  • The 1970s were more than just shag carpet and polyester; they were a time of deep contradiction. While things felt full of possibility, a shadow of distrust hung over everything—fueled by Vietnam, Watergate, and a struggling economy. As more parents headed to work to keep up, many children were left unsupervised for long stretches.By this time, neighborhoods like Houston’s “The Heights” had become run-down and poverty-stricken. Many teenage boys were dropping out of school just to help their families survive. Growing up in a world that felt increasingly unstable and often without a father figure at home, these boys were vulnerable. They were searching for belonging and a mentor, but tragically, they found a monster who used his own teen accomplices to lure them into a trap.Join Jen and Cam as they discuss "In the Boat Shed: The Houston Heights Murders."A huge Thank You to our team:Listener Discretion by Edward October Research & Writing by Lauretta AllenExecutive Producers Nico & Jesse of The Inky Pawprinthttps://theinkypawprint.comSources:available on ourtruecrimepodcast.comLearn more about your ad choices. • This month, Nina Innsted of the Already Gone podcast joins Cam and Jen to discuss the disappearance of Paige Renkoski. Paige was a 30-year-old substitute teacher who seemingly vanished into thin air in May of 1990. It’s a curious case because it happened in broad daylight, on a busy highway. The only thing she left behind was her shoes and her purse.

We are thrilled to have Nina on Our True Crime Podcast. Not only did she just celebrate the 10-year anniversary of her podcast Already Gone, but she’s also an Ambie Award winner for her collaboration with Payne Lindsey for the podcast Up and Vanished: The Trial. Plus, she just published her first book, "Unsolved Michigan".

Please make sure to subscribe to Nina's podcast, Already Gone. It's a must for any true crime fan.

  • In the early hours of December 4, 1979, something jolted Edith Hastie awake—and within seconds, her worst fears were confirmed. Fire was already inside her home on Selby Street in Kingston upon Hull, climbing fast, swallowing the staircase, cutting off escape. Her four young sons were still inside. What followed was a frantic, desperate race against heat and smoke, one that would end in unimaginable loss, an act of quiet heroism, and questions that would linger long after the flames were extinguished. Three boys would be pulled from the wreckage with catastrophic burns. But this wasn’t just a tragic house fire. It was something far more disturbing.Because as investigators began to piece together what happened that night, a chilling pattern would emerge, one that pointed not to an accident, but to a firestarter hiding in plain sight.

  • ***Content Warning***

This episode contains discussion of violence, torture, and murder. Listener discretion is strongly advised.

At 16, Suzanne Capper was just a girl trying to find her place in the world and hanging out with a group she thought were her friends. But on a freezing morning in December 1992, a man named Barry and some of his coworkers were driving to work when their headlights caught a figure in the darkness.

Standing by the side of the road was a young girl, her hair was gone, and her skin was blackened and charred from fire. Somehow, against all odds, she had crawled out of the woods to find help.

The chaos that followed was something that none of the men in the van that morning would ever forget. The UK would wake up to news that there were people who lived among them, who had a main objective in life, which was to inflict pain. And the story would prove to be too much for them.

  • It was November 15, 2004, 52-year-old Peter Porco woke up like he always did: early, well before his alarm, with a few minutes to gather his thoughts in the quiet of his Delmar, New York, home. Peter was a fixture in the local legal community, serving as a state Appellate Division court clerk.

Peter got out of bed, walked to the bathroom, and stood at the sink.  He then made his way to the kitchen to pack his lunch for the day, just like any other workday. He always enjoyed the quiet mornings before the day started. He performed his morning routine like he always did. He started to load the dishwasher. He packed his lunch. He even wrote a check to pay a parking ticket.

Peter was known as someone you could count on to be there every day, doing his job no matter what. So when Peter failed to show up to work, one of his coworkers was sent to his home to check on him. When he arrived at the Porco home, something immediately stood out. The house was eerily quiet, the blinds drawn. He tried calling the landline. No answer. He called the police.

Officers arrived on the scene and approached the front door. He noticed something strange: a smear of blood on the doorknob, small droplets trailing down the porch.  The front door was slightly ajar. With a sense of dread, Officers opened the door. And that’s when he saw it.

Peter Porco was on the ground, his face covered in blood and his eyes wide open. Peter was dead.
