Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too!
This week, weâre continuing our series of episodes exploring what concept training actually is and how it shows up in real life with your dog. Weâre taking the concepts you hear us talk about all the time, breaking them down, and making them practical, relatable, and easy to spot in your everyday training. This time, Lauren is joined by the brilliant Alice to explore one of the most important foundations for calm, connected walks: proximity.
Ever feel like the moment your dog spots something interesting, you stop existing? Whether it's another dog, a squirrel, a jogger or an exciting scent, so many everyday struggles - from pulling on the lead to unreliable recall - come back to one simple question: where does your dog believe the value is? In this episode, Lauren and Alice explore why proximity isn't about keeping your dog glued to your side, but about building a dog who genuinely wants to stay connected because that's where the good stuff happens.
Along the way, they share real-life stories that highlight just how much emotion can sit behind proximity. From a dog unexpectedly disappearing after deer to a young Border Collie finding human closeness overwhelming because it predicted restraint, you'll discover why some dogs naturally avoid being close, how we can accidentally poison proximity by making it signal "the fun's over", and how to change that picture.
You'll also hear plenty of practical games you can start using straight away. From Middle, Middle Toes and Leg Weaves to Magic Hand, Two Feet On and simple collar-grab exercises, Lauren and Alice explain how these games build value for being near you, make handling feel positive, and create a dog who happily checks in both on and off lead. They also explore why proximity becomes such a powerful safety skill for reactive dogs, nervous dogs, and any dog learning to navigate busy environments with confidence.
Ready to build a dog who chooses to stick with you? Grab the ÂŁ1 Games Club trial, explore Proximity games and guided training tracks, and discover how a few simple games can transform your walks.

Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too!
This week, Lauren is joined by the brilliant Linda Hughes to tackle a question that sparks some fascinating discussion: what would you tell someone who's completely new to dog training?
Whether you're dreaming of becoming a professional trainer, you've just welcomed a puppy into your life, or you're simply trying to become the best trainer you can be for your own dog, this episode is packed with honest, practical advice from two people who have spent years learning from dogs, owners, mistakes, successes, and everything in between.
Lauren and Linda chat about why experience matters so much, and why spending time with lots of different dogs often teaches you more than any qualification ever could. They discuss the value of rescue and rehoming environments, the importance of handling dogs with different personalities, motivations and challenges, and why some of the biggest lessons come from the dogs who don't make training easy.
The conversation also dives into one of the most important skills a trainer can develop: knowing your limits. From aggression cases and bite risks to difficult home environments and client expectations, Lauren and Linda share why referring a case on isn't a sign of failure - it's a sign of professionalism. You'll hear why good trainers stay curious, keep learning, and aren't afraid to ask for help when they need it.
They also explore the human side of dog training. From avoiding industry cliques and maintaining healthy boundaries, to balancing online learning with hands-on experience, this episode is full of insights for anyone looking to build a long, sustainable future in the dog world.
And for new dog owners, there's plenty here too. Lauren and Linda discuss why the work starts before your puppy comes home, how to choose the right breeder, what questions to ask, and why preparation often prevents problems before they ever begin.
If you've ever wondered where to start, what really matters, or how to keep growing as a trainer, this episode is full of thoughtful advice, practical wisdom, and plenty of encouragement to stay curious and keep learning.

Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too!
This week, Lauren is joined by the brilliant Justin Prust for a conversation about something that affects every area of life and dog training: confidence.
We talk about confidence all the time when it comes to our dogs, helping them feel safe, optimistic, and ready to take on the world. But what happens when our own confidence takes a hit? How do we keep showing up for our dogs, our families, and ourselves when life throws us a curveball?
In this honest and personal episode, Lauren and Justin share experiences of navigating major life challenges, including divorce, grief, prolonged stress, and those moments that leave even the most confident people questioning themselves. Together, they explore the difference between confidence built on external validation and confidence that comes from a deeper sense of self-trust, purpose, and resilience.
You'll hear practical ideas for strengthening confidence in everyday life, from tracking small daily wins and practising gratitude, to celebrating progress, creating momentum, and recognising just how much you've achieved when it feels like you're standing still. Lauren and Justin also discuss the role of movement, exercise, nutrition, self-care, and community, and why confidence often grows through consistent actions rather than dramatic breakthroughs.
Along the way, they explore some of the surprisingly simple tools that can help shift your state when you're struggling, including music, humour, connection, pattern interrupts, and even the power of a favourite outfit, scent, or ritual to help you step into your best self.
Whether you're working through a difficult season, rebuilding after a setback, or simply looking for ways to feel more capable and grounded, this episode is packed with practical ideas and honest reflections that will leave you feeling encouraged and empowered.

Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too!
This week, Lauren is joined by Linda for a candid conversation about the mistakes that have shaped them as dog trainers and dog owners. Not the polished success stories, but the moments they would do differently, the lessons they learned the hard way, and the experiences that changed how they see dogs forever.
From creating a Border Collie with endless intensity and no off switch, to teaching a reactive dog to scan the environment for trouble, they explore how easy it is to accidentally reinforce the very behaviours you're trying to avoid. Along the way, they discuss the hidden cost of drive, arousal and obsession, and why some of the things that look impressive in training can become problematic in everyday life.
The conversation also turns to physical wellbeing and the lessons that come with experience. Lauren and Linda share stories of sport dogs who pushed through discomfort, injuries that taught them to look more carefully, and how their views on repetitive ball throwing, impact and canine fitness have evolved over time. You'll hear why high-drive dogs can be particularly difficult to read, and why enthusiasm doesn't always mean a dog's body is coping well.
Alongside the serious lessons are plenty of lighter moments too. Runaway dogs, stolen sandwiches, Christmas turkey theft, unexpected chinchillas and the kinds of stories that are funny now, but perhaps weren't quite so funny at the time. Because if you've lived with dogs for long enough, you'll know that some of your greatest learning comes wrapped in chaos.
Most importantly, this episode is a reminder that nobody ever knows it all. No matter how many dogs you've owned, how many qualifications you hold, or how much experience you've built, dogs have a remarkable way of keeping you humble. The best trainers aren't the ones who never make mistakes - they're the ones who keep learning from them.
Ready to listen in? Press play, and let us know: what's the biggest lesson a dog has ever taught you?

Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too!
This week, Lauren is joined by the brilliant Sam to answer a listener question that so many owners of worried dogs will recognise: what do you do when the very confidence-building games designed to help your dog seem to scare them in the first place?
Whether it's a cardboard box, a crinkly bottle, a piece of paper on the floor, or simply something unfamiliar appearing in the environment, some dogs find the world a much bigger and scarier place than others. In this episode, Lauren and Sam explore why confidence building isn't about following a game exactly as it's demonstrated, but about finding the right starting point for the dog in front of you.
Together, they discuss how to break optimism games down into tiny, achievable steps. For some dogs, that might mean playing Cardboard Chaos. For others, it might simply mean being comfortable in the same room as a cardboard box. You'll hear why progress often comes from looking for the smallest possible win and building from there, rather than pushing for the finished picture too quickly.
Lauren and Sam also chat about the role of movement, choice, and pressure release when working with nervous dogs. They explore why giving a dog the option to leave can actually help them become braver, how owner pressure can unintentionally make confidence struggles harder, and why keeping training light, playful, and enjoyable often creates the biggest breakthroughs.
The conversation also highlights the importance of reinforcement. From food motivation and toy play to everyday opportunities for earning rewards, you'll hear why "trainability is susceptibility to reinforcement" and how building a stronger reinforcement history can transform what is possible for a worried dog. Lauren shares examples from her own dogs, while Sam talks about helping a noise-sensitive dog learn that sounds and novelty can predict fun rather than worry.
Most importantly, this episode is a reminder that there is no single blueprint for confidence building. The best training plan is always the one that works for the dog standing in front of you.
If you're living with a nervous, cautious, or pessimistic dog, this episode is packed with practical ideas, encouragement, and simple next steps to help you build confidence one small win at a time.

Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too!
This week, Lauren is joined by Dan to tackle something that sits behind every training session, every result, and every relationship with your dog: mindset. Because no amount of better treats, tools, or techniques will compensate for a cluttered, inconsistent, or reactive headspace. When your thinking is off, your timing slips, your patience shortens, and your dog feels it.
In this episode, we dig into how a strong handler mindset is actually built, through small, repeatable actions. Dan shares why having one clear outcome for each session matters, how to break training down into simple chunks (think step-by-step, not all at once), and why trusting the process is what eventually gets you to that point where everything starts to click.
Lauren and Dan also explore the impact of the people around you. From training partners to wider communities, who you spend time with shapes how you think, how you train, and what you expect of yourself. Youâll hear honest insights into competition, comparison, and how to push for high performance without letting it become personal.
We also go into the patterns that often hold people back - getting stuck on setbacks, replaying problems, or measuring yourself against highlight reels instead of real progress. Youâll learn practical ways to shift your focus, track wins, and course-correct day by day so progress stays steady, even when things feel messy.
If you want better dog training results, it starts with better thinking - and this episode will give you simple, practical tools you can use straight away.

Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too!
This week, Lauren is joined by Karen for a conversation all about cooperative care: what it is, why it matters, and why so many dogs are simply enduring handling rather than truly feeling safe with it. Because a dog standing still at the groomers, freezing for the vet, or wriggling away from a harness isnât necessarily âfineâ at all. Often, itâs a dog with no real understanding, no predictability, and no way to say âgive me a moment, Iâm not comfortable with that.â
In this episode, we explore what happens when handling becomes a conversation instead of a battle. From muzzle training and harness struggles to grooming, nail clipping, tick removal, blood draws, and end-of-life care, cooperative care gives dogs a way to understand whatâs happening and participate willingly, one small step at a time.
Lauren and Karen talk through some of the practical foundation skills that make the biggest difference, including permission chin targets, bar holds, head-in-a-box games, and how proofing and gradual layering help dogs build genuine confidence around handling. Youâll hear why reinforcement alone is not the same as consent, especially for food-motivated dogs who may still be deeply uncomfortable, and why giving dogs the ability to pause or opt out can completely change the emotional picture.
We also dive into the real-life impact this training can have. From smoother blood draws at the vets and calmer grooming appointments to reducing stress around harnesses and medical procedures, cooperative care isnât just ânice trainingâ - itâs a practical skillset that supports your relationship with your dog through every stage of life.
Along the way, Karen shares honest reflections about living with a dog who finds handling difficult, the signs she wishes sheâd recognised earlier, and how changing the conversation has transformed everyday interactions that once felt stressful or confrontational.
If you want handling to feel calmer, clearer, and more collaborative for both you and your dog, this episode is packed with practical ideas you can start using right away.

Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too!
This week, weâre continuing our new series of episodes exploring what concept training actually is and how it shows up in real life with your dog. Weâll be taking concepts you may have heard us talk about before, breaking them down, and making them practical, relatable, and easy to spot in your own training sessions and day-to-day interactions with your dog. This time, Lauren is joined by the brilliant Linda to unpack one of the most important concepts in all of dog training: engagement.
Engagement isnât just about your dog looking at you. Itâs about your dog choosing you. Choosing to check in. Choosing to stay connected. Choosing to come back mentally, even when the world is busy, exciting, distracting, or full of things that normally pull their attention away.
Lauren and Linda explain why engagement underpins so many other skills - recall, agility, obedience, heelwork, calm walks, even day-to-day life in the house - and highlight the importance of the moments we often miss: the ones where your dog asks, âWhat next?â
Youâll hear why rewarding re-engagement changes everything and how building a strong reinforcement history helps your dog learn to seek connection rather than waiting to cued repeatedly. They also talk about fading food rewards sensibly, why you donât need to carry treats forever, and how value, timing, and consistency shape habits over time.
Play gets a huge spotlight too, because engagement should feel good for both ends of the lead. Lauren and Linda discuss using toys, movement, celebration, and genuine interaction to build motivation and excitement in training - while also recognising that different dogs enjoy different styles of reinforcement.
Lauren and Linda also consider the balance between engagement and appropriate disengagement. Because the goal isnât a dog who pesters you endlessly for work - itâs a dog who understands when the game is on, when the game is finished, and how to switch between focus and relaxation successfully.

Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too!
This week, Lauren is joined by Michelle for a deep dive into parasite prevention, fleas, ticks, worms, gut health, and the growing questions around routine chemical treatments. Because while spot-ons, tablets, and collars are often seen as the ânormalâ route, more and more dog owners are starting to ask: what are these products actually doing to our dogs, our homes, and the environment around us?
In this episode, we talk through the pros, cons, and wider impact of common flea and tick treatments, including why many products only work once a tick or flea bites, and what that means when weâre talking about tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease and babesiosis. We also explore some of the side effects owners report seeing, from nausea and digestive upset to neurological wobbliness, and why dosage can become especially tricky for very small dogs.
Lauren and Michelle also talk through a different approach: prevention through consistency, daily habits, and supporting the dog as a whole. Youâll hear why they choose natural ingredients, how gut health plays a surprisingly important role in resilience, and why they prefer testing before treating wherever possible. From worm counts to stool testing, this episode challenges the idea of broad-brush âjust in caseâ treatments and looks at the growing issue of resistance over time.
We also get practical. Youâll learn how to check your dog properly for fleas and ticks, where ticks commonly hide, how to spot flea dirt with a comb, and easy ways to feed preventative powders consistently, including a simple kefir ice cube hack your dog will probably love.
Along the way, thereâs a wider conversation too, about waterways, bees, environmental impact, and why one spot-on treatment on a large dog can reportedly kill up to 25 million bees. Itâs a huge topic, and whether youâre already using a natural approach or just starting to question the status quo, this episode will give you plenty to think about.
If youâve ever wondered whether thereâs another way to approach flea, tick, and worm prevention, this episode is for you.

Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too!
This week, Sam is back to tackle a challenge so many dog owners face: car chaos. That moment the keys jingle or the engine starts and suddenly your dog is whining, pacing, panting, or barking out of the window. For some dogs itâs over-excitement, for others itâs stress or even nausea, but either way, it can make every journey feel like hard work.
So whatâs really going on? For so many dogs, the car is loaded with meaning. Walks, vet visits, new places⊠It all builds anticipation fast. And that anticipation can tip into over-arousal or stress before youâve even left the drive.
Listen in as Lauren and Sam share practical strategies to help you change that picture. From creating ânon-eventâ car journeys that lead to nothing, to simply hanging out in a parked vehicle, youâll learn how to remove the hype and help your dog switch off. They also explore why crate training can be a game-changer for calm travel, creating safety, structure, and reducing visual triggers that often keep dogs on edge.
As the conversation continues, Lauren and Sam get into the detail of reinforcement too, because if calmness in the car is your current struggle, thatâs where your training focus needs to be. From hand feeding and using daily food to build positive associations, to scatter feeding and long-lasting chews, this is all about changing how your dog feels about the car.
If your dog struggles with car travel, this episode will give you a clear, practical plan you can start straight away.

Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too!
This week, Lauren is joined once again by canine physiotherapist and hydrotherapist Mel to tackle a topic that every dog owner thinks theyâve got covered: exercise. Because your dogâs walk should be the best part of their day⊠not the moment an avoidable injury begins. From dogs launching out of the boot and sprinting cold, to high-speed chases, collisions, and endless ball throwing, many ânormalâ routines are actually putting dogs at risk.
In this episode, we dig into what safe, effective exercise really looks like. Mel explains what the canine body actually needs, and why those first 10â15 minutes of on-lead walking can completely change the picture. Together, Lauren and Mel explore how simple management choices - like using pathways, long lines, and food scattering - can prevent that explosive first sprint and reduce injury risk before it even starts.
They also talk through real-life scenarios, including multi-dog households and dogs returning to ânormalâ walks following an injury. Youâll hear how to safely reintroduce off-lead time, when play together is helpful (and when itâs not), and how to step in before fun turns into a crash. This is all about understanding arousal, movement, and giving your dog the best chance to move well and stay sound.
We also explore the hidden risks in everyday environments, from wet ground and deep sand to pebble beaches and even different types of astroturf. Plus, we cover how exercise should change across your dogâs life, from older dogs with arthritic changes to fit, active sports dogs, and why nutrition needs to support increased training load.
If you want to exercise your dog in a way that builds strength, protects their body, and supports long-term health, this episode is for you.

Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too!
This week, Lauren is joined by the brilliant Linda to tackle a challenge so many dog owners know all too well: window barking. That moment your dog launches at the glass, noise levels skyrocket, and suddenly the whole house feels tense, chaotic, and on edge. Itâs frustrating, itâs exhausting, and for many, it feels like a habit thatâs impossible to break.
In this episode, we dig into whatâs really going on behind the barking. Because this isnât about a ânaughtyâ dog - itâs about a behaviour thatâs been well practised and, in many cases, accidentally reinforced. With the perfect vantage point and a constant stream of passers-by, your dog is essentially rehearsing the same high-arousal response again and again.
Lauren and Linda walk through a real-life case study, sharing exactly how Linda turned things around for a dog who was making daily life stressful for the entire household. Youâll hear how small, practical changes - like adjusting the environment to reduce visual triggers - and simple, positive training techniques can make a huge difference. From using window film to limit rehearsal, to transforming a familiar âuh-uhâ into a powerful, reward-based attention cue, this is all about changing the picture, not battling the behaviour.
We also explore why telling your dog off often backfires, and what to do instead. By focusing on rewarding the behaviours you do want - like choosing to move away from the window and settle calmly - you can build habits that stick, without conflict or frustration.
If youâre dealing with barking at windows, TVs, or anything that triggers that launch-and-lunge response, this episode will give you a clear, practical plan you can start straight away.

Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too!
This week, Lauren is joined once again by the brilliant Justin Prust, and this time theyâre diving into something that sits at the heart of everything we do â connection. We donât always realise how much it matters until itâs missing, but when you really look at it, connection is the thing holding your life (and your relationships) together.
Together, Lauren and Justin get real about what makes connection last: effort, consistency, and the courage to show up as your true self, even when it would be easier to stay polished and distant. From years of friendship to long-distance family life, they share honest stories that prove just how powerful a genuine âhelloâ can be.
Youâll hear practical tips for building stronger relationships in your everyday life, from sending voice notes that actually feel like you, to handwritten letters which add a personal touch that can mean the world, especially in our fast, digital world. They also explore why the idea of being âself-madeâ is a myth, and how connection grows when you give first, show up without judgement, and let people see the real human behind it all.
And because this is a dog training podcast, we bring it back to our dogs too. From the communities built around training and shared interests, to those unexpected, sometimes shocking moments (yes⊠even the rabbit-catching kind), we talk about how connection with your dog can wobble, grow, and ultimately become stronger through understanding, training, and trust.
If youâve been craving deeper relationships, a stronger sense of community, or a better connection with your dog, this episode will leave you thinking differently about the small things that really matter.

Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too!
This week, Lauren is joined by the wonderful Sam for a refreshingly honest conversation about something many dog owners struggle with: walks that just donât work.
If your dog melts down on walks and you feel that knot of dread before you even pick up the lead, you are not alone - and you are not doing anything âwrongâ. Together, Lauren and Sam unpack why the traditional daily walk can actually be the hardest possible exercise plan for some dogs, especially those who are reactive, worried, or easily tipped into over-arousal. When a dog is in a state of panic, learning simply isnât possible, and busy environments can quickly become a daily rehearsal of stress for both you and your dog.
So instead, we give ourselves permission to do it differently: think exercise, not walks
This episode explores practical, flexible alternatives that meet dogs where they are. From strength-building and slow, intentional movement at home, to Cavaletti work, Confidence Circuits, and fun food-based games that burn energy quickly, Lauren and Sam share ideas that are both achievable and effective. They also talk about how to make outdoor exercise work for your dog, including choosing quieter locations, using enclosed fields, and understanding how timing and space can make all the difference.
Along the way, they dive into the kinds of movement that really support behaviour change - including proprioception work and simple core exercises that help dogs feel more balanced and in control of their bodies.

Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too!
This week, Lauren is joined by vet and Flyball competitor Nichol to chat about raising a sports dog.
Barking dogs, busy ringsides, food on the floor - whether itâs agility, flyball or obedience, itâs a complex environment for any dog to navigate.
Our starting point is simple: focus first. Because if you donât have your dogâs attention, you donât have training. Lauren and Nichol share the games and reinforcement strategies that help your dog choose you, even when the environment is full of distractions.
From there, they get into arousal and overstimulation; why shorter sessions build more success, how to introduce busy environments without overwhelming your dog, and why sometimes the best decision you can make is two minutes of great work⊠then leave.
They also talk about building strong foundations at home, where your puppy can win; developing play, building reliable tug, and creating skills you can take anywhere - especially when food isnât enough in high-energy environments.
Youâll hear how to proof behaviours in new places, prevent rehearsal of unwanted habits, and help your dog feel safe and confident around the realities of competition spaces.
And finally, they touch on early retrieves, body awareness, and the mindset that keeps your training moving forward with every puppy you raise.
If youâre building a future sports dog - or just want a dog who can stay with you when life gets busy - this episode is packed with practical ideas.

Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too!
This week, weâre diving into one of the most misunderstood topics in dog training: food.
Are you bribing your dog? Creating a treat monster? Or accidentally training the very behaviours you donât want?
At absoluteDogs, we believe something simple but powerful: every piece of food has a purpose. When you start using food with intention, everything changes. Your dogâs choices, your timing, and the results you see in real life.
In this episode, we break down whatâs really going on when you use food in training, and how to turn rewards into a tool that builds trust, clarity, and reliability - not dependency.
We share practical, everyday training games that go way beyond âsit for a biscuitâ. Think reinforcing proximity to supercharge your recall, paying for loose lead walking when the world is distracting, and creating positive associations with things like cars, visitors, and door knocks so they become a total non-event.
Got more than one dog? Weâve got you covered there too. We chat about using food to move dogs smoothly from space to space, reducing chaos, ditching the chasing and negotiating, and building a calmer, more cooperative household.
We also tackle noise reactivity and the realities of neighbourhood life, showing you how to use simple pairing strategies to reduce barking and help your dog settle. Plus, the easy calming setups we always have ready - think Kongs, lick mats, and smart crate routines.
And finally, we head into cooperative care - grooming, handling, and vet visits - sharing how simple consent-based games like chin rests and stillness can transform these experiences from stressful to straightforward.
If youâve ever wondered whether youâre âdoing food rightâ, this episode will change how you see every single treat you deliver.

Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too!
This week, the wonderful Sam is back to chat to Lauren about a rather unusual training tool: a suitcase.
Siri, Samâs Jack Russell, used to find the outside world pretty overwhelming. Walks could quickly turn into moments of panic and reactivity. But a simple idea - a suitcase covered in unicorns - helped turn those tricky situations into something far more predictable and productive.
The âmagic suitcaseâ isnât really magic at all. Itâs a portable kit filled with games Siri already knows and loves. Over time, the suitcase itself became a cue: when it appears, it means âweâre about to play our gamesâ. That sense of familiarity gives Siri something clear and positive to focus on, even when the environment around her feels challenging.
Lauren and Sam talk through how Sam built this system step by step. It started at home with short, successful sessions, layering different games onto the same prop so Siri learned that the suitcase always means the same thing. From two paws up and wrap-arounds to boundary settles, scent searches, and even a noise box, each activity became part of the same predictable routine.
Itâs outside in the real world where the suitcase really comes into its own. When things feel a bit spicy - a busy street, a sudden distraction, a trigger appearing in the distance - the suitcase helps Siri switch from worry to work. Sometimes that means calm, nose-led activities; other times itâs more dynamic games that channel her energy in a helpful way.
If you have a reactive, nervous, or easily over-aroused dog, this episode offers a simple, creative way to bring familiar training games with you wherever you go - helping your dog feel safer, calmer, and more able to make good choices.
Ready to give it a go with your own dog? Sam would LOVE to see you and your dogs get creative with their own magic suitcases.

Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too!
This week, weâre continuing our series of episodes exploring what concept training actually is and how it shows up in real life with your dog. Weâll be taking concepts you may have heard us talk about before, breaking them down, and making them practical, relatable, and easy to spot in your own training sessions and day-to-day interactions with your dog. This time, Alice is back to chat to Lauren about the king of all concepts: calmness.
Calmness isnât just a nice-to-have in dog training. For some dogs, it can be life changing - even life-saving! In this episode, youâll hear more of the powerful story of Bonnie, a âmastiff mega muttâ with a difficult history and significant physical challenges, whose path forward depended on learning how to find calm in a world that once felt overwhelming.
Listen in as Lauren and Alice chat about what a lack of calm actually looks like in real life - hyper-vigilance, barking, lunging, restless nights, and a nervous system constantly on high alert. When dogs are stuck in these states, learning becomes almost impossible. Thatâs why calmness isnât just another training goal; itâs the foundation that makes everything else possible.
Youâll hear how calm became the guiding principle behind every training decision for Alice and her partner Chris. From using simple techniques like DMT (Distraction, Mark, Treat) to build neutrality around triggers, to ditching the food bowl and investing every meal into reinforcing calm choices, Alice explains the practical steps that helped Bonnie move from chaos toward stability - and how, for Bonnie, that really was life-saving.
Bonnieâs transformation didnât happen overnight, but the path forward was built from simple, repeatable habits: noticing calm, marking it, reinforcing it, and gradually expanding her comfort zone. As Bonnie learned to settle, walk more peacefully, and rest deeply, something else shifted too - the humans changed. Because one of the most powerful truths in dog training is that our dogs borrow our state.
If youâre struggling with barking, reactivity, or a dog who seems constantly on edge, this episode offers a hopeful and practical roadmap for building calmness - not as a trick, but as a lifestyle.

Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too!
Better performance and fewer injuries donât start with fancy equipment. They start with the basics: a balanced stand, a square sit, and the patience to slow down.
In this episode, Lauren sits down with canine physiotherapist and hydrotherapist Mel to talk about what really builds strong, capable dogs. They chat about why stillness is so important, how a steady stand builds strength, body awareness, and focus, and why those skills carry over to everything from agility to everyday handling.
Mel explains the kinds of exercises she would typically start with in a physio setting and how those same foundations can be thoughtfully built into the fitness work you do at home. You'll hear how she uses forward focus to reduce fidgeting, how she builds a true square sit, the value of small upward reaches to wake up the core, and the importance of coaching clean sit-to-stand transitions without shuffling feet or dipping spines. Mel also explains how she picks the right starting point for the dog in front of her - often core control before paw perfection - and why itâs so important to set both dog and owner up for success.
Lauren admits she was surprised to learn how long muscle really takes to build (typically six weeks before you see proper, measurable development) and Mel highlights the other key piece of the puzzle: fuel. If youâre asking your dog to grow muscle while keeping calories the same, it simply wonât happen. Strength takes time, consistency, and enough nutrition to support the work.
If youâre fascinated about canine physiotherapy or curious about safe, simple foundation exercises you can build into your dogâs routine, this episode is a must listen.

Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too!
Ever felt like your dogâs reactivity is a life sentence you didnât sign up for? Lauren and Linda chat frankly about the things owners rarely say out loud - relief when the pressure lifts, embarrassment on tricky walks, and the guilt that often comes with owning a challenging dog - and replace them with a manageable plan built on acceptance, management, and smarter reinforcement.
We discuss what progress really looks like for anxious and sensitive dogs and how strategies like DMT (Distraction Mark Treat) and scatter feeding help turn triggers into calmness. Youâll hear how small, consistent choices can help lower arousal at home - window film, crates, room rotations, stair gates - and how those choices pay off outside with calmer walks and fewer reactions. We also get practical about tools: head collars introduced with care, well-chosen flexi leads for safe environments, and hip belts that free your hands so you can feed fast and move with purpose. The tool isnât the point; itâs all about the outcome - no bad rehearsal.
Lauren and Linda also share their own experience of multi-dog households, especially when thereâs one or more Naughty But Nice dogs in the mix. They chat about how tension can ripple through a group, why pairings and fast interruptions matter, and how to diffuse stare-downs without drama. Youâll also hear why âyour house, your rulesâ is a training superpower: no forced greetings, no visitors grabbing your dogs, and no apologies for safeguarding your dogâs experiences. When setbacks happen, we ask the only question that moves you forward: what needs changing in setup, timing, or criteria?
This is a conversation about trading perfection for progress you can feel. Management is training, distance is often your friend, and the word âyetâ keeps you moving. If youâre ready to swap shame for strategy and work with the dog in front of you - even on the tough days - hit play, share this with a friend who needs it, and leave a review to help more owners find support.
