It's Casual Friday! Emma speaks with Jeet Heer, national affairs correspondent for The Nation, to round up the week in news. Expanding on this, Heer unpacks the growing pictures of a Trump campaign embroiled in chaos, as their main spokesfolks for the disillusioned man â JD Vance and RFK Jr. â continue to flounder in their media rounds while the candidate himself cannot help but get âLoomered.â Wrapping up, Jeet, Sam, and Emma look to the electoral state of the race, unpacking the central role Pennsylvania, North Carolina (thank you, Mark Robinson!), and Georgia are likely to play come November and assessing the rhetoric Harris and Trump are using to court those voters.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive deep into the crevasses of Mark Robinsonâs developing controversy, gain clarity on some of his and Trumpâs past interactions, and ponder the question of the leaker. It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with Noah Kulwin and Brendan James to discuss the most recent season of the Blowback podcast. Then, she speaks with Ross Barkan, contributing writer at New York Magazine and columnist at Crain's New York, to discuss his recent piece published in The Nation entitled "Is Eric Adamsâs Luck About to Run Out?" First, Emma runs through updates on Israelâs attacks on civilians in Lebanon, the UN General Assemblyâs overwhelming vote to end Israelâs military presence in Gaza and the West Bank, reporting on Bidenâs weapons transfers, the uncommitted movement, the teamstersâ lack of a presidential endorsement, swing state polling, New York Stateâs Democratic Party problem, the Fed, Russian offensives in Ukraine, Beshearâs conversion therapy ban, and dropping overdose rates in the US, before parsing a little more thoroughly through the developing story of Israelâs en-masse attack of Lebanese citizens (Hezbollah or not) via the use of rigged communications technologies. Emma is then joined by Noah Kulwin and Brendan James as they outline why they chose Cambodia for the focus of the fifth season of Blowback, unpacking its role as a central (and emblematic) node in the constellation of US intervention in Southeast Asia during the Cold War. Expanding on this, Kulwin and James dive into the complex cast of characters that dominate this season, first tackling the Nixon-Kissinger paring that set the blueprint for the entire thing, first sabotaging Vietnam peace negotiations in 1968 to help ensure a GOP victory, before centering a strategy of âPeace with Honor,â by which Nixon meant a shift to more expansive bombing campaigns, and immediately expanding said campaign by pushing Cambodian Royal Norodom Sihanouk to embrace a US carpet bombing campaign on his country (not war, totally not war), all while hiding the entire campaign behind a dual reporting system, separate books, and direct, behind-the-scenes communications between the White House and relevant parties. Shifting focus to Cambodia, Noah and Brendan parse through the Khmer Rougeâs origins as an auxiliary, socialist-aligned force with the North Vietnamese (the basis for Nixonâs carpet bombing), only to help launch a full-scale Civil War in the wake of the US-backed deposition of Sihanouk by South Vietnam in 1970, resulting in years of bloodshed (increased by ongoing US bombings) that saw the Khmer Rouge gain more and more territory and power, until the formerly-small-guerilla movement successfully sacked the capital city of Phnom Penh, launching five years of forced labor, full-scale genocide and the extermination of ethnic minorities, refugee crises, mass executions and more under the rule of Pol Pot. Continuing, James and Kulwin move into the breakdown of Cambodian society under the brutal regime of Pol Pot and expanding conflict as the Khmer Rouge turned against the North Vietnamese government that had supported them (in part due to the Khmer Rougeâs budding relationship with the US and the West), resulting in said government launching a full-scale invasion of Cambodia, getting rid of Pol Pot and establishing a friendly regime, all to the condemnation of the West that had been peacefully watching Cambodians die for nearly a decade. After briefly expanding on the mythology tying the Khmer Rougeâs rule to the greater Soviet movement and the obvious failures of said narrative when you look into who was actually supporting the regime, Emma, Brendan and Noah jump to the modern period, unpacking the symbiotic nature of a fully-capitalist Cold War between the US and China, and what that has meant for Cambodian development over the last decade, wrapping up the interview by running through the final figures on the mass deaths from US carpet bombing (100-150k), the US-backed Civil War (300-500k), and the following Cambodian Genocide (1.7m). Ross Barkan and Emma then dive right into the overwhelming cloud of corruption around NYC Mayor Eric Adams, including FOUR federal investigations ranging from domestic to foreign corruption, and the correlating complete incompetence of his governance, with Barkan comparing his administration to a Tammany Hall that didnât actually deliver anything to the people. After briefly expanding on the role an overwhelmingly unpopular New York Democratic Party is having on races up and down the ballot, Ross and Emma tackle the particulars of Adamsâ corrupt relationship with the NYPD and its deadly impact.

It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Sarah Lazare, editor of Workday Magazine and contributing editor at In These Times, to discuss her recent reporting on the UAW fighting to restore a shuttered Stellantis plant in Belvidere, Illinois. Then, they speak with Mark Joseph Stern, senior writer at Slate, to discuss the recent reporting in the New York Times regarding Chief Justice Robertsâ influence on the Jan. 6th cases that were in front of the Supreme Court. First, Sam runs through updates on Israelâs widespread and indiscriminate attacks across Lebanon, the UNâs vote on ending Israeli occupation in Gaza and the West Bank, Fed cuts, polling, the GOP blocking another IVF protection attempt, Mike Johnsonâs desperate attempt to stop a Trump-backed push for a government shutdown, Express Scripts vs. the FTC, and growing labor action in the US, before watching Sen. Kennedy set quite the example at a hate crimes hearing. Sarah Lazare then joins, diving right into a history of Stellantisâ plant in Belvidere, Illinois, from its opening in 1965 and through its peak in the late 2010s â when it employed nearly a third of the townâs population â before the Corporation-formerly-known-as-Chrysler decided to idle the plant in 2023, essentially taking away thousands of jobs from the city. Continuing, Lazare then unpacks the plantâs role in UAW negotiations with Stellantis in the wake of their overwhelmingly successful stand-up strike against the Big Three automakers (Stellantis, Ford, GM), with the reopening of the Belvedere plant one of many unprecedented wins for the union and emblematic of their emphasis on bringing workers into the manufacturing decisions that shape their lives. After briefly expanding on the details of the UAWâs major wins from the stand-up strike, as well as some concessions, Sarah walks Sam through the devastating impact the idling of this plant has had on Belvidere, the incredible effort by other locals and the broader UAW to use their labor to demand the return of this plant, and the likelihood of the fight expanding into a broader strike, before wrapping up with a conversation on the ripple effect of labor rights and the importance of solidarity in building a better life for us all. Mark Joseph Stern and Sam then jump right into two major stories coming out of the recent SCOTUS leak, with Stern first outlining the revelations of Chief Justice John Robertsâ complete MAGA-pilling over the last few years, including taking a commanding role on three major Supreme Court cases regarding Donald Trump, spearheading the entirety of the immunity decision and icing out the liberal judges, taking Alito off of the January 6th decision, and pushing for a landmark ruling on Trumpâs ballot access case. After expanding on the⊠âjurisprudenceâ behind Robertsâ shift, Sam and Mark parse through the mystery of the leak, and what it tells us about the state of the Court.

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Dr. Melvin Rogers, professor of political science and associate director of the Center for Philosophy, Politics, & Economics at Brown University, to discuss his recent book The Darkened Light of Faith: Race, Democracy, and Freedom in African American Political Thought. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trumpâs second would-be assassin, JD Vanceâs unbridled racism (and the related shutdowns in Springfield, Ohio), the Harris campaign, Boeingâs labor strike, Israelâs continuing murder of its own citizens, Yemen-Israel conflict, Boarâs Headâs fiasco, Eric Adamâs absurd corruption, and Laura Loomerâs budding relationship with Donald Trump, before parsing through JD Vanceâs claim to have âcreatedâ the insane anti-migrant conspiracy around Haitians in Springfield (incidentally, it was actually created by Nazis). Professor Melvin Rogers then joins, first outlining the importance of intellectual history in helping to contextualize the institutions and structures that materially shape our world within the ideas and strains of thought that inspired them, before stepping back to examine the two often contradictory strains of black intellectual thought that dominated how African American intellectual leaders saw the American projectâs relationship to Black people, be it as a something that is, at its core, about degrading and dominating Black identity, or something that, like all of humanity, is unfinished, malleable, and subject to growth. Professor Rogers then walks Sam through the pre-Civil War evolution of these beliefs, exploring the stories and works of folks like David Walker and Martin Delaney to demonstrate how central the question of the American project was to the push for abolition and Black liberation, with the former presenting a challenge and a disruption to the project while the latter saw it as immutable, best to be abandoned altogether. After reflecting on the model of the American project in the pre-war North, Professor Rogers moves to the post-Reconstruction era, tackling the retrenchment of White Supremacy in the US political system as the resilience of the underlying cultural anti-Black beliefs that the era had failed to address, examining how this issue â one that abolitionists had very much acknowledged â was then addressed by Black intellectuals moving into the 20th century, with folks like Billie Holiday and James Baldwin bringing the contradictions and horrors of American racism to the fore to, once again, challenge the idea of the American project itself, and push white Americans to acknowledge the lingering impact of the ideas that shaped our society.

Then, she's joined by Jakob Johnston, writer and researcher at the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR), author of the book Aid State: Elite Panic, Disaster Capitalism, and the Battle to Control Haiti, to discuss the recent pattern of hate crimes against Haitian immigrants in the United States. First, Emma runs through updates on the swing-state race, the fight for IVF, anti-migrant fear-mongering, US foreign policy, Israelâs lies, and environmental emergency, also parsing through some lingering impacts from the debate. adrienne maree brown then joins, diving right into the disappearance of the community alongside growing feelings of insecurity, isolation, and bigotry, tackling how this phenomenon is cultivated and stoked by the disappearance of public spaces. Expanding on this, maree brown walks through the precarious balance between rejecting mentalities of supremacy and dehumanization that divide us without cutting the line of humanity with the people who hold those views, before stepping back to tackle a few particular essays in âLoving Corrections,â which tackle the idea of countering the narratives of supremacy that have taken root in particular ideologies (patriarchy, Zionism) without atomizing or marginalizing the identities that have been corrupted (masculinity, Judaism, respectively). After expanding on the importance of understanding the historical and social context for building these bridges, adrienne and Emma bring the conversation to a close with the importance of understanding the personal context of interpersonal conflict. Jake Johnston then jumps right into summarizing the recent wave of anti-immigrant fear-mongering coming from the GOP and bolstered by the mainstream media, unpacking the deep history of the âsavageâ portrayal of Haitians from the stateâs outset as a product of the first truly successful slave revolt before stepping out to look at the material impact of the reemergence of this brand of fascist rhetoric, namely a wave of anti-migrant hate, violence, and threats. Taking a step back, Johnston and Emma expand on the long story of Haitiâs economic exploitation at the hands of the US and the West, a relationship exacerbated coming out of the 2010 earthquake that wreaked havoc on the countryâs infrastructure and saw vulture capitalists (many state-backed) flock to the disaster to stake their claim, a development that has seen the Haitian government become even further disconnected from their population, elected by and accountable to donors, rather than voters. Wrapping up, Jake tackles the importance of using this moment of absurd anti-migrant hate to redirect the conversation toward the policies of exploitation and domination â and the lack of a politically-backed alternative â that create this insecurity in the first place.

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Benjamin Shestakofsky, assistant professor of sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, to discuss his recent book Behind the Startup: How Venture Capital Shapes Work, Innovation, and Inequality. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on presidential polling, the Harris, Trump and RFK campaigns, the DOJ v. Google II, IRS funding, the GOPâs government shutdown, Israelâs slaughter of its own citizens on October 7, the murder of Aysenur Eygi, and the end of the âreturn the hostagesâ pretense for Israel, before listening in to Foxâs suggestions for Trump ahead of tomorrow nightâs debate. Professor Benjamin Shestakofsky then joins, diving right into the rise of Venture Capitalism out of late 1970s/early â80s reforms that shifted economic and corporate power to financiers and investors, such as the opening of pensions to riskier assets and dropping capital gains taxation, pushing businesses to put a much greater emphasis on stock prices and the promise of immediate growth instead of production or sustainability. Next, Professor Shestakofsky tackles his time working within and researching the world of venture capital, giving some practical examples of the risky and unsustainable mentality that drives the industry, stepping back to walk through some of the extreme examples of the exploitation it relies on, including obscuring the failed promises of their technologies by relying en masse on low-wage human labor â be it in the Philippines or Las Vegas. Expanding on this, Benjamin walks Sam and Emma through the impact the VC revolution has had on undermining the quality of services and helping to spur the âenshittificationâ of the internet, before wrapping up with some alternatives to this Silicon Valley mentality and the policies that can be used to incentivize that change.

It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with David Sirota, founder and editor-in-chief of The Lever, and host of its new investigative podcast Master Plan. David Sirota then joins, diving right into the recent reporting on his podcast tracing the blueprint for legalized corruption in the form of deregulated campaign finance law and gutted bribery statutes back to the Watergate scandal, a scheme funded by illegal corporate donations, and a memorandum response by one Lewis Powell to growing calls for campaign finance reform that would go on to define the American conservative movement for the next half-century. Expanding on this, Sirota walks through how the recommendations found in Powellâs memo would be implemented seamlessly over the next few decades, filling attempted congressional reforms with loopholes for corporate backs, and bringing about multiple successful Supreme Court cases (decided, in part, by the now Justice Powell) that would set the stage for the Citizenâs United decisionâs unbridling of corporate spending on elections, before looking at the myriad ways (many obvious) in which this legalized corruption completely undermines democratic governance. After touching on the constant (and, at points, prevalent) backlash to growing corruption in US politics, David and Sam explore the normalization of this corruption to a point beyond complacency, but of a refusal to even call it out, dissecting the hold corporate money has on our elections and what that means for candidates seeking to reform the system, and diving deep into the central role the Supreme Court has played in advancing American conservative agenda as an acting super-legislature. Wrapping up, David briefly assesses Harrisâ 90-day candidacy, the importance of simplifying your agenda when given such a short window of time, and the state of the Democratic Party in 2024.

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Neil J. Young, co-host of the Past Present podcast, to discuss his recent book Coming Out Republican: A History of the Gay Right. Then, she speaks with Hal Singer, economics professor at the University of Utah, to discuss some of Kamala Harris' recent economic policy proposals. First, Emma runs through updates on Israelâs expanding offensive in the West Bank, major polling bumps for Dems, the first Harris/Walz interview, Trumpâs Q invocation, Trumpâs would-be assassin, Bidenâs major victory over drug prices, SCOTUSâ continuing attacks on student debt relief, Brazil vs. Elon Musk, Cornellâs labor action, and corruption in journalism, before parsing through the overwhelming threat of every type of violence that Palestinians face in the West Bank. Neil J. Young then joins, diving right into the roots of the gay Republican movement in the Cold War-era Lavender Scare, an overwhelming attempt by US federal, state, and local governments to criminalize, surveil, and punish queer Americans, be they politicians, military, police, or just every-day citizens, leading up to a 1978 ballot initiative from the religious right in California to ban queer people from teaching in public schools that saw an overwhelming organizing effort from gay Republicans to shoot down the initiative and prove that they belong in the GOP, a belief that took root among white gay men in San Francisco, before taking off nationally. Moving forward, Young then looks to the major role played by California Governor and US President Ronald Reagan over the outset and evolution of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in pushing rhetoric and policy that sought to otherize and demonize the homosexual âlifestyleâ as the root of the crisis, and helping to launch a period of severe backlash to the social progress of the 1960s, particularly among the right. After expanding on the role of the public school system, and specifically the targeting of public school teachers, in right-wing attempts to marginalize and exclude queer folks, Neil and Emma walk through some of the major parallels we see with the challenges facing queer Americans today, wrapping up with the importance of understanding the immense stakes of this moment within its historical context. Professor Hal Singer then jumps right into the story of the US fight against inflation over the last few years, tackling the roles of price gouging and a corrupt rental market in exacerbating this economic crisis, including an expansive conversation on RealPageâs landlord price-fixing suit, and the absurd arguments that economists and elites used to obscure these root causes. Next, Professor Singer and Emma walk through the recent economic proposals from the Harris campaign that focus on these particular issues and what they mean within the context of the transition between Biden and her administrations, before briefly challenging the focus on anti-trust as a tool to prevent price gouging, and wrapping up the interview with an assessment of Biden major victory in drug price negotiations with the pharmaceutical industry, and how Harris can expand on and learn from that win.
And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they watch JD Vance and Tim Walz make clear the party divide on unions, Royce White insults the âcuck mentalityâ that won Trump his first campaign, and JD Vanceâs cousin, BD, gives a peak behind the olâ country curtain of JDâs campaign. Itâs Hump Day! Emma speaks with Cole Stangler, France-based journalist covering politics, housing, and labor, author of the book Paris Is Not Dead: Surviving Hypergentrification In The City Of Light, to discuss the recent developments after the French elections, and the government's efforts to form a coalition. Then, she speaks with Michael Brenes, historian at Yale, author of the Warfare and Welfare newsletter on SubStack, author of the upcoming book The Rivalry Peril: How Great-Power Competition Threatens Peace And Weakens Democracy, co-authored with Van Jackson, to discuss his recent piece in the Boston Review entitled "The Harris Doctrine." First, Emma runs through updates on Jack Smithâs newest indictment, Harrisâ first sitdown interview as Democratic candidate for President, GOP struggles in Georgia and North Carolina, Larry Hoganâs gains in Maryland, the Trump campaign, polling, the RFK campaign, Israelâs expansion of their genocidal offensive to the West Bank, Bidenâs heavy-handed pier mishap, Meta, and Nassau Countyâs mask ban, before expanding on Jack Smithâs updated Jan 6 indictment and the response from the Trump campaign. Cole Stangler then dives right into a background on Franceâs recent snap elections, called by Emmanuel Macron in the face of the rising popularity of the far-right, resulting in a left-wing plurality in parliament unified by their anti-fascist aims, with the Macronist center-right coalition finishing in second and the far-right in third. From here, Stangler walks through Macronâs astonishing decision over the weeks since to take a hardline stance on refusing to name a left-wing prime minister or allowing the establishment of a left-wing government, taking advantage of a lack of constitutional clarity in the period he is allowed to take in naming a successor. After expanding on how this maneuver is ideologically consistent with Macronâs politics, Cole explores the overwhelmingly (and unsurprisingly) negative â but productive â response from the French left, unpacking their plan for pushing Macron to fulfill his constitutional duties, before wrapping up with an assessment of what Macronâs failure to name a new PM means for the immediate-future of French governance. Emma is then joined by Michael Brenes, who jumps right into the central parallels in his comparison between the infamous Henry Kissinger and Bidenâs National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, touching on their expansive roles in administrations pushing foreign policy projects to maintain and strengthen American primacy with little-to-no moral limit, and walking through the particular role Sullivan has played in advancing Joe Bidenâs hyper-Zionist agenda despite overwhelming public disapproval. Shifting focus, Brenes then looks to Harrisâ recently named National Security Advisory, Philip Gordon, unpacking his record as Middle East coordinator in Obamaâs second administration, including his objections to US interventionism and regime change, stance on Israeli apartheid and Palestinian self-determination, and role in advancing the Iran deal, despite Israelâs objections. After expanding on some more problematic (if predictable) elements of Gordonâs background, Michael parses through the lines between Harrisâ critique of Bidenâs approach to Israelâs genocide and real signs of a differing agenda, and why Bidenâs failures offer important lessons in the contradictions of US primacy and imperialism.
And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by RM Brown as they watch Trump call on the Lord to come down and count ballots in California, parse through Tulsi Gabbardâs not-so-shocking endorsement of Donald Trump, and listen to Glenn Beck unpack the American Oligarchy. It's News Day Tuesday! Emma speaks with Alex Sammon, politics writer at Slate, to discuss his reporting from the Democratic National Convention. First, Emma runs through updates on continuing massacres in Gaza, Israelâs conflict with Hezbollah, Russiaâs massive barrage on Ukraine, RFKâs candidacy, Jack Smithâs case against Trump, fascist disenfranchisement in Texas and Georgia, the UAW, Macronâs refusal to name a left-wing PM, Krogerâs anti-trust trial, gun violence, and labor action among Canadaâs freight rails, also touching on the DNCâs superspreader status and Trumpâs attempt to set the rules for the next debate. Alex Sammon then joins, diving right into his review of the four-day-long corporate-sponsored PR convention that was the DNC, and its rejection of the most pressing critiques of the party platform from pro-Palestinian delegates. Expanding on this, Sammon walks through his experience at a self-proclaimed âZionessâ party, a pro-gressive, pro-zionist, and pro-Kamala event, including the advertised speakers (including Senate and Congressional members), none of whom showed, and its incredibly brash yet seemingly ruminative discussion of Israel (no mention of Palestine, of course). After tackling some of the major attendees that did make the event â including Mondaire Jones and Van Jones â Sammon parses through the rhetoric that dominated the event, with little discussion of campaign spending or ongoing lobbying efforts, and a whole lot of talking about how good that Biden administration was for Israel and how great it would be if that continued, often with the implication that such a continuation should not be expected. Sammon wraps up the interview by running through his major conclusions from the event, before Emma covers some major (and majorly concerning) disenfranchisement efforts coming out of Nebraska and Georgia.
And in the Fun Half: Emma parses through some devastating and disturbing stories coming out of Gaza, including the effects of constant stress on Palestinian children, and Israelâs lionization of the IDFâs most infamous rapist. Dakota from Michigan discusses the state of the election in Michigan, the MR Team unpacks third parties and the use of electoral pressure, and Jesse Watters guns for the spotlight as he pulls out the heavy hitters of birtherism and rape fantasy to attack Kamala Harris. Happy Monday! Emma speaks with Andrew Chow, technology correspondent at Time Magazine, to discuss his recent book Cryptomania: Hype, Hope, and the Fall of FTX's Billion-Dollar Fintech Empire. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel stirring up conflict with Hezbollah, stalling ceasefire discussions, the ongoing slaughter of defenseless Gazans, polio in Gaza, Ukraineâs offensive, the Trump campaign, the RFK campaign, Bidenâs few path-to-citizenship policies, killer cop corruption, and Uberâs business malpractice, before watching RFK announce the TENTATIVE suspending of his campaign and his endorsement of Donald Trump, and listening to his sister dissect what the ârealâ Robert Kennedy would think about it. After expanding on some of the misleading claims about Bitcoinâs criminal uses, Chow begins to wade into the great build and fall of Sam Bankman-Friedâs crypto empire, walking through how his Wall Street roots and effective altruist ideology led him to see the realm of crypto as a volatile market in a power vacuum, ripe to be taken advantage of, resulting in FTX taking off as an unregulated crypto exchange that all went through the bank account of one, financially reckless individual, with zero checks or balances whatsoever. Chow then dives into the particular role political donations played in SBFâs reckless spending, before slowly walking through the crypto collapse that SBF made so inevitable, and the complete erosion of the faith that its once-idealist community had in it, exploring its rebirth over the ongoing election as hedge fund-backed bipartisan lobby pleading for legitimacy at the feet of US political and financial institutions. Emma wraps up the free half with some coverage of Elizabeth Warrenâs direct call-out of the Harris campaignâs (and Biden Administrationâs) refusal to abide by domestic (or international) rule of law when it comes to arming Israel.
