  • What is the government doing regarding mandatory sexual reporting?

After £200 million spent on IICSA, Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, what has been the outcome?

Today's conversation is with two of the leading voices campaigning against child sexual abuse.

Lawyer and partner, Dino Nocivelli and author, Alex Renton.

What does this new amendment mean?

    And what can you do?

To find out more about Voices Unbound please visit: https://voicesunbound.org.uk/
    And Mandate Now: https://mandatenow.org.uk/
For the lastest article from Mandate Now about the new legislation: https://mandatenow.org.uk/the-governments-useless-child-sexual-abuse-reporting-law/
And this is the letter/ press release that you can send to your local MP: https://voicesunbound.org.uk/current-campaigns/

Alex Renton is a writer and journalist whose career has ranged from arts and food writing to politics and the investigation of child abuse. His career as a war reporter and development worker took him to the Middle East, Africa, East Asia and the Balkans. He has worked for The Independent, The Times, Newsweek, and the London Evening Standard and contributed to a host of other newspapers and magazines. He is also the author of the e-book Planet Carnivore: how cheap meat costs the earth (Guardian Shorts, 2015).

Dino Nocivelli is a partner in the abuse department at Leigh Day law firm and joined the company in 2022. Dino specialises in actions for child sexual abuse survivors. Dino has appeared in a significant number of media publications providing his expert opinion and commentary, including among others the BBC, ITV and the Guardian. He has also provided evidence to the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA).

    Questions for Alex and Dino:

What's happening with regards the mandatory reporting, IICSA and the Criminal Justice Bill?

The government came out with the latest ruling regarding mandatory reporting last week. What was changed?Alexis Jay, the head of IICSA said that she was deeply disappointment by the new bill. Do you agree. If so why?“The measures are a sham – worse than useless: this legislation will put back the cause of getting good law in place to protect children today in any institution, from schools and care homes to hospitals and sports clubs.” Voices Unbound What can we do to turn this around? Who can we contact or speak to?

  • Today I talk about the importance of joy.

When we begin on the journey of childhood trauma healing it can become all consuming.

Life can become really hard - lots of tears, feeling pain.

    It can feel overwhelming.

But part of the healing is to remember the joy.

So today I talk about the importance of remembering happiness, gratitude and joy.

  • PLEASE NOTE: We talk about sexual abuse in this episode which some viewers may find triggering.

Today's episode is with author Charles Spencer.

As I was preparing for the interview a line in his book really jumped out: "many of us left Maidwell with demons sewn into the seams of our souls."

What a heart-breaking and powerful turn of phrase.

One that I can really resonate with.

Today he talks about his childhood sexual abuse at boarding school, bullying, his sister, Diana, going off to boarding school and the impact of boarding school on children.

And what about the path of healing - what are the therapies and exercises that he has used to start healing? A very touching and powerful testimony to the legacy of boarding schools.

What does he think of under 13 boarding schools?

    ---

Charles Spencer is an author, a broadcaster, a podcaster, a British peer and the younger brother of the late Diana, Princess of Wales. He has recently published a memoir about his time at boarding school called, A Very Private School.

    Questions for Charles:
    1. I would love for you to share what drew you to write your memoir? Why now?
    2. When did you first start to realise the impact that your boarding school experiences had had on you?
    3. When you think of Maidwell, what's the one word that comes to mind?
    4. In your interview with Laura Kuenssberg you mentioned how your sister, Diana, said to your father when she was left at boarding school, “If you loved me, you wouldn't leave me here” How did your sister leaving for boarding school impact you?
    5. “What we suffered was not just a separation from all that we knew and loved, but an
amputation. ...it lacked the most important quality of a home: it was without love.”(P.9)
How did it impact you, to be without love?
    6. The physical violence. What went on at Maidwell regarding physical violence and
    discipline? (P.68) (P.87)
    7. “To keep his abusive system intact, Jack relied on concealment, collusion and cunning.” (P101) Could you please explain?
    8. Bullying. Could you please talk us through some of the bullying you experienced and
    witnessed? (P.189-199)
    9. Sexual abuse. If you feel comfortable to share, what happened when you were 11? (P.206-216)
    10. The political ramifications. How might the decision making of leaders who have been to these schools be affected?
    11. “Fascinating aberration” (P.6) What do you feel about boarding now? Do we need to open a debate into this practice? Do we need to abolish early boarding? What are your thoughts?
    12. Other topics to talk about:
    1. Showing emotions or “blubbing” (P.62)
    2. Abandonment (P.64)
    3. “I had been sent away because I had somehow fallen short as a son.” (P.107)
    4. Making yourself sick in order to get an adult to show me warmth and sympathy (P.108

With the information you now know what is your honest opinion about our boarding school? If you were to sum up your boarding school experience in one word what would it be?Could you please talk about your experiences of boarding school. On Monday of this week I came across this article from the Telegraph about a fellow pupil and how "it did him the world of good": https://www.telegraph.co.uk/columnists/2024/02/17/boarding-school-princess-diana-earl-spencer-maidwell-hall/

I also received an email from the wife of an ex-boarder last week. In it she talks about how her husband claims to have "loved boarding school".

But has real difficulties with emotions and relations

So today I wanted to speak to those who loved boarding.

I see there are 3 camps.

    1. The truth, they loved it and it was good for them.
    2. Denial, those that have suppressed or dissociated from what happened
    3. Betrayal trauma and the work of Jennifer Freyd. Many of us were betrayed at boarding school and it creates amnesia according to Dr Freyd's work.

    Warm regards, Piers

  • Dive into the intricacies of the Mother Wound with guidance from author, Dr Mark Stibbe.

This video unpacks the keys about the Mother Wound. What is it?

  • How does complex PTSD show up in people's lives?

What are the symptoms if people have been through trauma as children or adults and are wondering if they have complex PTSD?

Today I share some thoughts from Pete Walker's book Complex PTSD and I share some of the symptoms.

I also talk about some of the examples from my own life and that of clients.

I link boarding school syndrome to complex PTSD.

  • In today's video I talk about what is complex PTSD, complex post traumatic stress disorder or CPTSD.

I draw upon the work of Dr Judith Herman, Pete Walker and Dr Gabor Mate.

    What is it?

And what are the seven diagnostic criteria for Complex PTSD?

I have been reading Pete Walker's book in more depth recently and have been struck by how similar boarding school syndrome is to complex PTSD.

Reading the seven diagnostic criteria from the psychiatrist, Dr Herman, really helped me to make that connection.

If you would like to me to talk more about complex PTSD please do let me know.

    Warm regards, Piers

  • Today I wanted to offer some reflections about the mother wound and boarding school.

I share some insights I had from last weekend's boarding school retreat which we were filming for our documentary Boarding on Insanity.

I talk today about how boarding school creates a mother wound.

Our mothers are no longer there for us.

I share some teachings from Joy Schaverien and other experts in the field of the Mother Wound.

    Take care, Piers

  • What does an educational psychologist who has spent 30 years in this profession feel about boarding schools?

And what were her own experiences of boarding school like?

Today my guest shares her personal and professional experiences of boarding especially co-educational boarding.

What does attachment theory think of residential institutions?

And have boarding schools changed? Are children getting good educations in these institutions?

    ---

Morag Edwards has spent over 30 years as an educational psychologist and uses her knowledge of child development to shape fictional characters in both historical and contemporary fiction. She is the best-selling author of several books including her recent autobiography about her boarding school upbringing called, Almost Boys which is published under her pen name, Isobel Ross.

    Questions for Morag:

I would love for you to share a little of your journey. How did you get into the work you now do?What drew you to writing your experiences of boarding school down? How has it been for you once the book was released? Some areas I would love to explore (we will not be able to get round to all the topics...):How parents of boarding school children might “be uncomfortable living with a child's emotions.” (P.17)Neglect – “no one had responsibility for us apart from each other.”the lack (P.28)Boarding school and broken attachments (P32-36) (P.129)“No matter how securely attached to their parents, all children will feel homesick when they arrive at BS and must grieve according to their pre-existing attachment style.” (P.38)We are told that more securely attached children fair better at boarding school. Do you feel this is the case? (P.38)The separation between home and school and how that was for you. (P.43) (P.72?Crushing our feelings/ dissociation (P.46)(P.69) (P.75)Being told: “The only reason you're here is because your parents don't love you.” (P.48)Petty rules (P.50)The missing element of child development: “I propose that the missing element is a parent's capacity to know the child's mind.” (P.54-55) Please expand.Neglect: “Neglect of indifference in our earliest years can mean a child remains stuck with a developmentally young way of expressing emotions.” (P.57)“Our 'home' could never be a place of safety or relaxation.” (P.74)Bullying (P.82) (P.116)How the system has not changed (P.96) (P.107) (P.241)Sexual bullying and Fisherman (P.115-130)
