  • “From the moment the shark attacked him, Chris Blowes was in a race against time. He should have died, but he didn’t.”

In this episode, I speak to the extraordinary Chris Blowes who is a great white shark attack survivor and above-the-knee amputee. On Anzac Day 2015 at Right Point, Fishery Bay in South Australia, Chris Blowes was engulfed in the jaws of a 5 metre great white shark. With Chris, his board, and the shark disappearing beneath the surface, his friends quickly sprang to rescue him, all while the ever-present shark loomed below.

At just 26 years old, Chris had lost a leg and suffered severe lacerations to his left side. He had lost a significant amount of blood and was stranded at the bottom of a cliff, over 30km from the nearest country hospital, with minimal acute trauma resources available. Barely alive, Chris received nearly 90 minutes of CPR in the ambulance and emergency department of Port Lincoln Hospital.

Chris has embraced stepping outside his comfort zone and views his experiences as learning opportunities. Today, Chris is a proud father and husband, the managing director of his successful building business, an Australian Para Surf Champion, and has represented Australia at the World Para Surf Titles in California. Chris Blowes is living proof that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

  • * Trigger warning: Still birth/infant loss *

In this deeply moving episode, I speak with Emily, a courageous woman who faced unimaginable challenges during her pregnancy journey in 2022. What started as excruciating pains in her stomach and back, while being just under 7 months pregnant turned into a harrowing ordeal that would test her resilience in ways she never imagined.

Emily recounts the agonizing seven days she spent in the maternity ward, crying out for help. Despite her pleas, the medical staff failed to recognise the severity of her condition until it was too late. Tragically, Emily went into cardiac arrest, and her daughter, Macie, passed away in the womb, delivered stillborn.

Miraculously Emily was brought back to life and underwent emergency surgery to address a twisted bowel. The extent of the damage was severe, with most of her long and short bowel removed, leaving her with only a fraction of her intestines intact. Placed in an induced coma, Emily faced a long road to recovery, enduring multiple surgeries and relying on TPN (tube feeding) to sustain her.

Throughout her journey, Emily battled not only physical pain but also the emotional toll of losing her daughter and grappling with a chronic illness called Small Bowel Syndrome. Despite the bleak prognosis from doctors, Emily's spirit remained strong. With unwavering determination, she faced each day head-on.

Join us as Emily shares her inspiring story of survival, resilience, and the power of the human spirit to overcome even the darkest of times. Her journey serves as a reminder that, even in our darkest moments, there is always hope and the possibility of finding light at the end of the tunnel.

  • I sit down with the incredible Matison, who defied the odds in her battle against Cystic Fibrosis. At just 29 years old, Matison underwent a groundbreaking combined double lung and kidney transplant.

Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic disease causing thick and sticky mucus in the body, posed severe challenges for Matison, primarily affecting her lungs and gastrointestinal system. Her health took a devastating turn as a teenager when she contracted Mycobacterium Abscessus, an antibiotic-resistant lung infection. This infection led to a rapid decline in her lung function, leading to a double lung transplant as her only option for survival.

Matison's journey to receive the transplant included 6 years of fighting and searching and 11 agonizing rejections due to her persistent infection. During her fight for a transplant, she also developed Chronic Kidney Disease from the toxic antibiotics, leading to renal failure.

On August 20th, 2022, Matison received the life-saving surgery that forever changed her life. Despite the hardships of transplantation, she remains profoundly grateful to her selfless donor and their family.

Tune in as Matison shares her inspiring story of resilience, perseverance, and gratitude, offering hope to those facing similar battles against chronic illness!
