How clean is your produce?
We don’t think about it often, but maybe we should.
Imagine the life cycles of fruits and vegetables: they’re sprayed with pesticides, covered in fertilizer. Is that what you want to be biting into?
Meet Mareya Ibrahim. She’s the inventor of a clean eating product line. She’s an award winning entrepreneur, chef, author, patented inventor, and a food industry veteran with over 26 years in the industry.
Mareya’s also concerned about how well we’re washing our fruits and vegetables. Lucky for us, she has a few helpful tips to save us a trip to the toilet (or hospital).
The Revolting Truth About Our Fruits and Veggies
The world of produce is risky for consumers.
Dealing with the aftermath of one of the biggest E. coli breakouts in over a decade, the threat of eating contaminated produce is as real as ever.
Even worse, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that the risk of food poisoning is highest during the summer months.
“First and foremost i think it’s important to understand that if something is cut or processed, that means it’s been handled by dozens of different touchpoints,” Mareya explains. “And every single processing points requires the utmost level of safety. And if that is not being upheld, then you’re potentially putting yourself at risk.”
Most of us try to wash our fruits and veggies with water, but Mareya says that water is ineffective for cleaning produce.
“What else do we wash with water and it’s all clean? Nothing!” she exclaims. “Not our plates, not our hands, not even our hair or our dogs. You need a cleanser to be able to remove what water can’t.”
Clean Eating - The SAFE Way
After her father experienced a cancer scare that prompted doctors to tell him “no more fruits and vegetables,” Mareya was determined to make eating produce safer.
It was insane that her father could not eat his favorite healthy foods because of the risk of contamination! So together, Mareya and her father formulated Eat Cleaner’s All Natural Fruit + Vegetable Wash.
With a natural blend of fruit acids and antioxidants, this special produce wash is proven to wash 99.9% of contaminants off of produce AND prolong shelf life up to 200% longer!
Not only can this help save a family over $500 per year on average, but it’s better for the environment. Sounds like a win-win!
“[People] do not have to be sitting ducks, hoping that they’re protecting their family when they buy fresh produce at the store, but aren’t sure if it’s going to hurt them or not,” Mareya says.

Nothing encourages us to go outside and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air like the summertime. On the same note, nothing ruins your hairstyle faster than that sweltering summer humidity.
But you don’t have to let the summer be a never-ending bad hair day. Beauty blogger Dana Wood of Florida Beauty Problems returns to Just Ask David to share tips on taming your coif this summer, even when the weather feels like a clothes dryer stopped in mid-cycle.
Dana’s blog teaches readers how to deal with all the health and beauty issues that come up when you’re living the the swampy coastal state of Florida, like treating bug bites, protecting your skin from the sun, and - you guessed it - dealing with epic frizz.
Dana Wood is also a three-time Conde Nast Beauty Director (W, Cookie and Brides) and regularly contributes to media outlets like The New Post and The Wall Street Journal.
Why Does My Hair Get Frizzy (and Why Doesn’t Anyone Else’s)?
Poofy hair is a lot more common than you may think, especially during the summer.
Trust us. You’re not the only one.
But it is true that some people are much more prone to frizz than others. What’s the deal - is there some kind of hair product you’re not using?
“Frizz prone hair is very porous, so it needs moisture. When the humidity starts spiking, it kind of soaks it up and that’s what makes it puffy,” Dana explains. “Even people with fine hair can have this issue,” she adds.
How to Defrizz Without Damaging Your Hair
Okay, we know heat is bad for hair. But seriously, what else are you supposed to do if you can’t combat the the frizz with a flat-iron straightener or blow dryer?
But Dana says that’ll set you up for even worse frizz down the road.
“I really think the whole issue of heat styling is a vicious cycle,” she says. “But there’s no question that intense heat really does smooth the cuticle of the hair.”
As a Floridian, being at the mercy of constant humidity is just part of the day-to-day grind for Dana.
So what does she recommend to tame the frizz without the heat?
“I go through vats and vats of deep conditioner because really, it’s a huge help,” Dana says.
Find the Solutions to All Your Summer Beauty Problems!
Are the hot summer months throwing a curveball to your beauty routine? Tired of the Florida humidity ruining your look? Dana’s website Florida Beauty Problems is sure to have something for you.

Our perspectives on sunscreen has changed a lot in the last 20 years.
We know now that sunscreen is an everyday product, not just for going to the beach. We know sun damage happens to everyone regardless of how light or dark your skin is. And we know that using sunscreen is any anti-aging routine’s secret weapon.
So since we know how essential sunscreen is to our lives, it only makes sense that we want to make sure we’re picking the right brand. There’s a lot more to sun protection than the level of SPF you’re wearing.
Lifestyle Director of Martha Stewart Living and Martha Stewart Weddings and regular beauty contributor to Refinery29, Melissa Goldstein joins Just Ask David to break the sunscreen mystery down for us.
Picking a Sunscreen: What to Look For
There are so many different kinds of sunscreens out there, especially now. But you still should do a little bit of research before you pick one. Your skin will thank you for it later.
“What really worries me, and what worries a lot of my colleagues, is that there’s so much misinformation out there about sunscreen,” Melissa says. “Not only do you need to use it, you need to choose the right one for you.
Some things about sunscreen-hunting are universal.
“You wanna look for two words on the label. You wanna see something that’s ‘broad spectrum.’ That’s really important because not every sunscreen is broad spectrum,” Melissa explains. “What that means is, you’re gonna get coverage from UVA, which are the rays that are gonna cause you to age, and UVB, which are the rays that are gonna cause you to burn.”
But you also have to consider yourself as an individual before picking a sunscreen.
Do you have oily skin? Sensitive skin? Do you live in a sunny city? How important is it to you to wear natural products? Do you wear makeup most days?
“We always say the best sunscreen is one that you’re actually gonna wear,” Melissa says. “You have to like it. Because if you don’t like it, you’re never going to wear it.”

The days of the skincare industry being a woman’s market are becoming a thing of the past.Skincare companies are following suit as men are starting to care more about their skin. Unisex skincare is popping up everywhere now to cater to a wider audience than before.Eric Fallon, co-creator of Rebels Refinery and one of the pioneers of the unisex skincare movement, joins Just Ask David to share his experiences and wisdom on his journey to his skincare calling, his product values, and the awesome product packaging that would make even the most manly man want to display it outside his medicine cabinet. The Birth of Rebels RefineryThe story of how Rebels Refinery was born is a lot like the stories of every other unisex or male marketed skincare brand. The main thread in all these stories? A man noticed signs of aging in his skin and stopped drinking the “skincare-is-only-for-women” Kool-aid. Prior to creating Rebels Refinery, Eric spent 8 years as a partner at a startup company that manufactured complex dispensing equipment for top personal care brands like P&G. This experience gave him the chemistry background and entrepreneurial know-how to start Rebels Refinery. Soon after leaving the startup, Eric joined forces with his 2 childhood best friends – who, like Eric, realized they were spending a ton of time stealing hair and skincare products from the women in their lives. They realized they were starting to look old and wanted to do something about it. With a little help from the reality show Dragons’ Den and tons of creativity, their natural grooming line of skin, hair and body products was born.Accessible, Affordable Skincare. For EVERYONE.So much is so right with the way that Rebels Refinery is marketed. With natural, high-quality formulas infused with antioxidants, peptides, botanicals, and other potent anti-aging ingredients, it would be sensible to assume we’re talking about an expensive luxury skincare brand here. The truth? You can find Rebels Refinery at Target. And there’s no need to feel left out if you’re not a man. Rebels Refinery is a unisex brand, and as Eric points out, they have products that are wildly popular with women - specifically, their cool Addam’s family-esque skull-shaped lip balm.“On top of being a cool design, it has an incredible formula,” Eric says. “The main ingredients are coconut oil, sweet almond oil, and beeswax… And then we have a more female-specific product coming out, which is our classic lip balm formula in the shape of a pineapple,” he hints.Ready to Rebel?Want to get your husband or male friends to take better care of their skin? The summertime is brutal on skin and hair. Between lounging under the sun and heading to the pool every day, we’re lucky to still have skin and hair at all!
On this educational segment of Just Ask David, health expert Lisa Davis and beauty guru David Pollock dish out a few tips on how to protect and maintain your skin and hair even if you hit the beach every single day until the summer ends.
Beat the Heat!
Sunscreen, a hat with a visor, and sunglasses are your best friends during the sunny summer months - for children especially.
And FYI, don’t be fooled into thinking that you don’t need sunscreen because you’re not outside very much.
That summer sun can do noticeable damage even through your windows, so make sure to keep a bottle of sunscreen handy at all times.
Don’t Be the Fool of Your Neighborhood Pool
If the pool is your designated hangout spot during the summer, you know how rough the chemicals in the pools can be on your skin and hair.
Good news: chlorine-green hair and wrinkly skin don’t have to be part of your daily pool attire anymore!
But seriously, anyone who’s swam their way through a few pools knows that those harsh chemicals do more than make you smell funny.
The chlorine strips the moisture from your skin and hair, leaving hair brittle and skin drier than chalk.
But not to worry: David and Lisa have tips on how to protect your skin and hair even while you’re in the pool!

If you’ve been phasing out your toxic beauty and grooming products, you probably already know the struggle of finding a natural deodorant. Most natural deodorants seem to work… for a few hours. At the end of the day, you smell like you’ve never put on any deodorant at all. And God forbid you live somewhere humid - don’t even bother.Suzannah Raff, founder of the natural deodorant company Cleo&Coco, says that stinky pits don’t have to be a fact of life just because you want to live clean. She joins this segment of Just Ask David to explain how natural deodorant works and how to get rid of the stink!Suzannah Raff on Starting a Green Beauty BusinessSuzannah’s inspiration to start her own deodorant business came when she started having a family. Suddenly, she became hyper aware of the toxic chemicals in many of the products we used. Becoming a mother made her even more concerned about what she was putting on her pregnant and nursing body. She had no problem replacing her beauty and hygiene products for more natural alternatives… except for one.“When I became more health conscious in my 30’s, I couldn’t find a natural deodorant that kept me completely odor free,” Suzannah says.Using her business savvy from working the first tech bubble of the late 1990s, Suzannah started a business creating natural deodorants. All of Cleo&Coco’s deodorants are free of any toxic chemicals, AND they smell fantastic. That’s always a plus.“I didn’t want a deodorant that smelled like a health food store and I didn’t want a deodorant that smelled like a drugstore,” she says. “I wanted something that smelled like your favorite body cream or your favorite hand soap.”A Natural Deodorant That Works: The Final Frontier of the Green Beauty IndustryLike Suzannah quickly realized, few natural deodorants actually keep you from smelling like an onion. Many people become discouraged with natural deodorants for this reason. But the reasons why they aren’t as effective as chemical deodorants have more to do with how those harsh chemicals change your body chemistry.“The common deodorant in drugstores, they block your sweat glands among other terrible things,” Suzannah explains. “They produce a lot of bacteria and buildup and then you sweat more because your body is fighting so hard to release those toxins.” Luckily, there’s a remedy for stinky pits caused by clogged sweat glands and bacteria buildup - continued use of natural deodorant.“The more you use [natural deodorants] over time, the less your own body actually produces an odor because you’re actually allowing your body to get rid of the toxins - which is what we do naturally,” Suzannah explains. “That’s why we sweat under our arms.”Follow Cleo&Coco on Social Media!Want to try Suzannah’s botanical deodorants for yourself?Check out Cleo&Coco on Instagram @CleoAndCocoNatural and “Like” on Facebook! Our skin is in a constant state of renewal. There is never a time when our skin is not sloughing off dead skin cells and regenerating new ones. But this process slows down as we age, creating a domino effect for the decline we see in our skin’s appearance.Wrinkles, sagging skin, age spots - all of these things happen for more than one reason. The better we understand these reasons, the better we can prevent the appearance of aging in the long-run.We know the products that claim to reverse aging. But what really works?Glycolic acid This versatile acid with tiny molecules is gentle enough to use on your face, but harsh enough to remove that top layer of dead skin with minimal scrubbing. That makes glycolic acid useful for a variety of skincare uses, like a face wash, light chemical peel, or serum. Hyaluronic acidOver 100 times more hydrating than water, we all have hyaluronic acid in almost every cell in our bodies -- not just our skin. But we produce less hyaluronic acid as we age, leading to wrinkles, a dull complexion, and loss of skin elasticity. Listen to Podcast for #3 & 4!Simply put, the best anti-aging products are going to repair and nourish your skin. All the extra riff-raff just makes us feel good (like moisturizers with flecks of gold - how is that going to help your skin?)Don’t forget to follow on Instagram and Twitter @JustAskDavid for more anti-aging beauty tips!

You can’t talk about celebrity hair without talking about Oscar Blandi.
Hailing from Italy, Oscar Blandi’s eponymous, iconic New York salon was opened shortly after he moved to America about 20 years ago.
Since then, he’s obtained an A-list clientele, featuring the likes of Jessica Alba, Jimmy Fallon, and Naomi Watts. His work has been featured in countless fashion magazines, including Vogue, Elle, Esquire, and many more!
Oscar Blandi stands out from most other hairstylists for one reason. In his own words: “I’ve been an innovator for this long because I believe in education.”
This time, he’s educating us on a few different ways we can protect our hair this summer. Come fall, your hair will still have that summer vacation glow!
Sunkissed Locks, not Chlorine Green
The summertime is when we go to the nearest beach, play with our kids in the pool, and generally soak up the sun.
We KNOW you’re slathering on sunscreen every time you leave the house, especially during the sunny summer months.
But your hair can sustain a damage, too. The sun’s rays, the chemicals in a swimming pool - these things can dry out your hair and leave it brittle.
“I always tell every client, treat your hair like you treat your skin,” Oscar says. “In the summer, it becomes much more hot. So make sure you’re constantly moisturizing your hair.”
Some of us don’t like moisturizing our hair because it sometimes weighs it down and makes it lose some of its body. But Oscar says it’s important to moisturize anyway. Unhealthy hair won’t hold much body, either.
“A lot of people... think that conditioner is not good because it makes their hair flat,” Oscar adds. “Your hair will go flat no matter what. The conditioner helps to moisturize your hair so it won’t become brittle, it won’t break.”

Microneedling probably sounds terrifying. Even though the results are so fantastic that most of us would sit through the pain, anyway - microneedling is actually pretty painless.
Marisel Salazar joins Just Ask David once again to give us all the details on the newest skin care craze. This time, it’s all about microneedling.
Marisel is a New York City based lifestyle writer and photographer. She contributes to various publications like PureWow, Martha Stewart Living, Tasting Table, and NYC GO.
What is Microneedling?
“Microneedling has steadily been gaining traction,” Marisel says.
Indeed, most skin care addicts have not shied away from the intimidating-sounding procedure. (Not even when Kim K showed Instagram her blood-streaked “vampire facial” - a type of microneedling that uses platelet-rich plasma to enhance its healing effects.)
But that’s the scariest version of microneedling. What is a general microneedling procedure like, and what does it do?
“In the office, microneedling uses a mechanized device called a dermapen and it makes thousands of miniscule needle punctures in the outermost layers of the skin,” Marisel explains.
“From these hole punctures, you get a healing response which generates collagen, alleviates acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and wrinkles. “
The price of a microneedling treatment at a doctor’s office? About $1,500. For a lot of us, that’s pretty steep.
Microneedling at Home
At over $1,000 per session, going to a dermatologist or esthetician for microneedling treatment is definitely an investment.
So for those of us who want to know what we’re getting into, you’ll be relieved to know that you can buy a microneedling roller for use at home.
And it’s only $30.
Of course, at-home microneedling rollers are not as effective as what a doctor has in their office. But it does show visible results.
“The results that you get from rolling it a couple times a week across your face… are truly incredible. It improves the performance of your serums,” Marisel says.
“Pairing [a serum] with a microneedle roller… is really the ultimate way to go in terms of making sure that your skin care is maximized.”

What Pores Actually Do
Pores are necessary. “Let’s face it - pores contain hair follicles. It’s also an outlet for perspiration and sebum. So it’s part of the natural function of the skin… When we get overheated, it’s a way for the body to perspire so we can balance out our body temperature

Kombucha bars, probiotic skin care, fermented foods from the other side of the world being commonplace in every grocery store across America overnight. (And why is everyone talking about prebiotics all of a sudden?)
It seems that probiotics and gut bacteria are becoming more and more important in any conversation we have about health these days.
Marisel Salazar makes a reappearance on Just Ask David to give us the facts behind the probiotic craze. Is it just a fad? Or is it a shift in how we understand our overall health?
Marisel is a lifestyle writer from New York City who has contributed to the likes of PureWow, Martha Stewart Living, Well + Good, and NYC GO. With her background in investigating beauty trends, she’s the perfect person to help explain to us what the big deal is with probiotics.
Probiotics: The Bacteria Everyone Wants to Eat
Probiotics aren’t magic pills or the latest diet.
Actually, probiotics are live bacteria that help keep our digestive systems healthy. When we eat junk food or foods high in preservatives, “bad” bacteria can accumulate in our guts over time, causing inflammation.
“Probiotics are really the health and wellness trend du jour,” Marisel says, and with good reason. “They’ve been extremely helpful in the wellness community when it comes to various disorders.”
Some of those conditions include constipation, leaky gut, and irritated bowels. Probiotics can be found in fermented foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, and kimchi.
Probiotics Break into the Beauty Industry
You don’t have to love the characteristically sour flavor of fermented foods to reap the benefits of probiotics.
In fact, research shows that the benefits of probiotics aren’t bound to just our stomachs. With new skin care technology that preserves probiotics without killing the bacteria, probiotic skin care is becoming noticed in the skin care industry.
“Topical probiotic skin care is really a wonderful, natural, and clinical way to calm and soothe aggravated or inflamed skin,” Marisel says.
“A lot of these topical probiotics… defend against pollution and other strong environmental factors, which is so helpful living in New York City myself,” Marisel adds. “I am in constant environmental pollution.”
Probiotics help us become more healthy from the inside out. And now, from the outside in.

How do you feel about D.I.Y. skin care? Is it a hobby of yours, or do you think skin care is better left to the professionals?
Lily Diamond, author of Kale and Caramel: Recipes for the Body, Heart, and Table, is here on Just Ask David to prove to you that you’re more capable of making quality skin care than you think. Kale and Caramel has been hailed as one of the best vegetarian cookbooks of the year by the Guardian, and one of the best cookbooks period in Spring 2017.
Skin Care: Everything You Need is in Your Pantry
We all like to splurge on expensive, luxury skin care every once in a while. They come in shiny, beautiful packaging. But more importantly, we buy them with the expectation that they’re going to give us the results we want.
But here’s the thing. Most of the ingredients in that luxury moisturizer you just bought can probably be found in your kitchen or garden.
And making skin care isn’t as hard as you’d think. In fact, Lily has been making her own beauty and body products for almost her entire life.
“I grew up in Hawai’i. My mom made most of the products for the spas and resorts on the island,” Lily says. “So I grew up watching my mom concoct those beautiful oils and body scrubs and bath powders. I very early on learned to go run outside and crush up hibiscus leaves - they create a beautiful conditioning treatment that you can put on your skin. So I already had an inclination towards making my own skin care products.”
“Some friends really requested I start a blog. They wanted a place where they could read both my writing but also recreate the recipes that I made at dinner parties.”
Honey Face Washing and Other DIY Recipes
The best part about making your own skin care products? Tailoring your skin care routine to your personal needs.
One of Lily’s D.I.Y. daily essentials is honey washing.
I’ve been using honey to wash my face for about ten years now,” she says. “It just completely transformed my skin care routine.”

Acne, psoriasis, rosacea - no matter the type, no one likes for their skin to break out.
Antonia Balfour L.Ac. joins Just Ask David to divulge a few of her secrets to healing sensitive skin using alternative methods.
Antonia is an acupuncturist, herbalist, and the founder of Yin Yang Dermatology. She specializes in holistic skin care and integrates Chinese herbal medicine into her practice.
With Chinese medicine, you take the whole picture into account - it’s a holistic approach.
Beauty is Skin Deep, So Heal From the Inside!
“What you put inside your body can really affect such great change,” Antonia says. “And so often what I see with my patients is that they’ve been treated with topical steroids…. and nothing from the inside, when really, the problem needs to be addressed from the inside out.”
The solution? A customized, individualized formula just for you - in the form of herbal tea.
“The teas really are the strongest way to take herbal medicine, but they don’t taste good,” Antonia admits. “They’re medicinal and earthy, but they really work.”
The Holistic Approach - Take a Deeper Look
A mistake that many of us make is trying to achieve clear skin by only focusing on our skin. The body is made up of interconnected system, so there could easily be something we can improve on elsewhere besides the skin.
“One thing that happens that I see in my practice is that some people will come in and they’ll have the worst diets in the world,” Antonia says. “They’re eating cupcakes everyday, having frappuccinos from Starbucks - a lot of sugar and a lot of dairy. One of the most difficult things to change is the diet. But it’s so important and the healing happens much faster.
A healthy diet is an example of how taking a more holistic approach can benefit your skin. The foods we eat affect the health and appearance of our skin, as do plenty of other factors we often don’t think of.

April was Rosacea Awareness Month. And if you missed out, you’re in luck - our favorite natural redhead is back to talk rosacea!Cofounder of the very first online beauty magazine, Candice Sabatini of Beauty News NYC, is back on Just Ask David to break down the types of rosacea and what you can do to reduce the appearance of flare-ups -- no makeup needed! What Causes Rosacea?Rosy cheeks are cute, but not so much when your entire face is beet red. If your rosiness is of the beet variety, don’t fret. Actually, over 16 million people in the United States experience rosacea - and the vast majority of sufferers are fair-skinned women over the age of 30. So what’s the cause of rosacea, then? Why is it that some are more prone to flare-ups than others?“Some people say that it’s a skin condition,” Candice says. “Other people will say it’s an internal condition that stems from the gut and shows up on the skin."Experts are split over the cause: is it an immune system disorder or a skin condition? No matter what you think the answer is, Candice has a few solutions.Controlling Rosacea Flare-UpsPlenty of people with chronic rosacea have accepted it as a part of life because they’ve heard a doctor or friend say that there isn’t a cure for it.But that doesn’t mean that rosacea has to rule your life.“People think, ‘Oh, I have a flare-up’ and there’s nothing that can be done, and that’s not true. It can’t be cured, but it can be managed,” Candice clarifies. We know now that rosacea is can be caused by gut inflammation - so it only makes sense that diet plays a huge role in flare-ups. Control you diet, control your rosacea!“Everyone who has rosacea has trigger foods,” Candice explains. “The most common trigger foods are spicy foods and alcohol.” Yikes. I guess that means no more Taco & Tequila Tuesdays. Before You Head Out the Door - Last Minute Quick Fixes for RosaceaOkay, so you know a few tricks to calm rosacea flare-ups now. But all of those solutions are really for the long-term. What about sudden flare-ups when you’re getting ready for a night on the town?“Vitamin C is great for everybody’s skin… but it’s really great for rosacea,” Candice suggests. “It has to be a fat-soluble vitamin C… not your typical ascorbic acid, which has a water-soluble base.”Also, you can use green or chamomile tea as a compress to alleviate some of that redness. These solutions can even fit in your purse!Follow Candice Sabatini and Beauty News NYC for More! Can’t get enough of Candice’s beauty tips? Monitor How Much Salt You’re Eating
Even if you NEVER reach for the saltshaker, your food is a lot saltier than you think!
Why? Lots of seasonings include tons of salt for taste. Also, foods with long shelf lives like frozen and canned foods, use salt as a preservative.
“It’s very difficult to avoid salt when you eat out,” John says. “Normally, my first choice when I eat out is the plainest thing on the menu, which means either a salad or turkey. Anything that says it’s been seasoned… [or is] in a sauce usually includes a lot of salt.”
If it sounds bland or gross, that’s because we’ve been conditioned to eat a lot of salt. Still, we can’t deny the health hazards of a high-sodium diet.
“There’s just too much salt out there. Most Americans eat much more salt than they should every day,” John adds. “It took me a year or two to really wean myself off [salt]. It made my blood pressure go down.”
Know Yourself and Do Your Research Before Changing Your Diet
While many of us accept that changing your diet or lifestyle for the better is a healthy move, no one wants to feel deprived of the food they enjoy.
It’s essential to research what kind of diet seems doable for you in the long-run. For example, if chicken nuggets are your absolute favorite food and non-negotiable in any new diet, a low carb diet would be more nugget-friendly than a vegetarian diet.
John says the key to simplifying your food choices (and your life) is to “cook more at home and really study labels… Read the labels of everything you buy.”
Also, if you’re worried about feeling hungry, you have to eat foods that will make you feel full without eating lot of it.
“You’ve really gotta not just cut the calories you eat, but the types of calories you’re consuming,” John says. “100 calories of sugar is a lot different from 1000 calories of lettuce.”
Exercise Alone Won’t Make You Healthy, But it Sure Helps
Okay, you picked a diet that’s perfect for your needs and lifestyle. A little uncomfortable, but totally tolerable.
So now, how important is exercise in all this? Do you have to start working out to be healthy?
Well, depends on what your health goals are. If you just want to lose weight, John says no, you don’t HAVE to.
“Exercise is important, but I’ve read over the years that diet is going to make the biggest difference,” he says.
If you think about the pure numbers of it, it makes sense. Which is the easiest way to burn 500 calories: running at a steady pace for about 45 minutes, or just avoiding that slice of cake?

It’s time to break up with your snooze button. You know it’s not a healthy relationship. You KNOW that you actually don’t feel more rested after hitting snooze a few times.
When it comes to falling asleep and staying asleep, Lindsay Champion, wellness director of women’s lifestyle publication PureWow, has got you covered.
As a matter of fact, she says that a little extra beauty sleep can actually make you more beautiful.
Beauty Sleep is NOT a Myth!
It may seem a little dramatic when people say that they need their beauty sleep, but they’re actually on the right track.
Studies on sleep all seem to suggest that sleep plays an important role in the amount of water your skin and hair absorbs.
“The University Hospital Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio studied two groups of women,” Lindsay says, pointing out one of her favorite researched studies. “One group regularly slept less than five hours a night… the other group of women slept between 7-8 hours a night, which is more optimal.
“So the group that slept less than five hours, they didn’t only have older looking skin, they had darker under-eye circles... [and] their skin was more dehydrated.”
So it seems pretty clear: Not getting enough sleep interferes with cell regeneration, which you need plenty of to maintain your youthful glow well into your years.
Tricks for Better Sleep
For many of us, getting a full 8 hours of beauty rest is difficult because we surround ourselves with distractions when we should be trying to go to sleep.
Lindsay recommends calculating your “sleep opportunity.” Coined by sleep scientist Matthew Walker, this term means how long it takes for you to fall asleep PLUS your total ideal sleep time. That means you need to consider how long you’re tossing and turning before you actually drift off to sleep.
Another great suggestion by Lindsay: Before going to sleep, set your phone or alarm as far away from you as possible. That way, when it wakes you up in the morning, you have to actually get up and cross the room to turn it off.
Take THAT, snooze button!

These days, people are more cognizant of the importance of their diet on their overall health than ever before.
It shows with the variety of diets that are springing in popularity. Even well-known and established diets like veganism and vegetarianism are getting a positive boost in recognition.
For everyone, the ultimate goal with any of these diets are to be healthy. Nutritionist Sam Houghton of GreenGut Wellness joins Just Ask David to talk to us about another diet that can help you lose weight, fight off (and even reverse!) heart disease, and - get this - you don’t even have to count calories.
What is Plant-Based Eating?
On the surface, plant-based eating may just sound like another phrase for being vegetarian. Although the two diets are compatible, plant-based eating is actually a lot more complex than your average vegetarian diet.
“On a whole food, plant-based diet, you don’t just hold off on the animal products,” Sam explains. “You also don’t eat anything that’s processed. So that includes white flour, white sugar, and a lot of vegetable oils.”
Omitting processed foods from your diet isn’t something we can all do easily. But you owe it to yourself to take care of your body, especially considering the effects of processed foods on your body in the long-term.
So what counts as a processed food?
“My favorite definition of it is from someone who’s really big in the plant-based community: Dr. Michael Gregor,” Sam says. “He defines processed food as something good is taken away and something bad is added.”
Health Benefits of Plant-Based Eating
Plant-based eating has a lot of unique benefits that many other diets do not have.
“Heart disease is the number one killer in our country,” Sam points out. “A whole food plant-based diet is the only diet that has been shown in scientific studies not only to prevent heart disease but also to reverse existing heart disease.”
So since plant-based diets can help with heart disease, it must be great for weight loss too, right? Exactly!
“A lot of people want to lose weight but they want to do it in a healthy, sustainable way rather than going on some crazy crash-diet,” Sam says. “One of the things about a plant-based diet is there’s more bulk and more fiber, so you feel fuller on fewer calories and you don’t have to actively restrict your calories.”

Unlike most fashion trends, athleisure hasn’t gotten any less popular as time passes. In fact, it’s still super common to see people wearing athleisure clothing everywhere you go. From to the gym, to college campuses -- even the mall.Celebrity Fashion Stylist and Co-founder/Creative & Style Director of Athleisure Mag Kimmie Smith joins this segment to explain the hype behind this lasting fashion trend. Kimmie is also the Fashion Editor of DJ Mag and the designer of her own romper line, ROMPER Ugly Romper. What’s New with Athleisure Trends in 2018There are two big reasons why athletic leisure wear has remained en vogue for so long: it’s stylish and it’s versatile.“Some items are worn to the gym and those are of course the core fitness function,” Kimmie explains. “But athleisure is also great transitional wear. Its items can be layered upon and [you can] go out to brunch or even the office.” With how fast-paced our lifestyles have become, athleisure is the fashion industry’s natural response. “It’s awesome to see over the last few years that it’s gone from the gym to other things you can wear out-and-about,” Kimmie adds. “It’s really functional, moving-type fabric, which is what makes athleisure so nice.”The fabric used in athleisure wear tends to be breathable, comfortable, and surprisingly stylish. Perfect for - well, pretty much everything!“What I love about it is, I can run around town in New York,” Kimmie shares. “And as a stylist, as a style director, as someone who is constantly meeting with clients, I am literally running all the time! So I need clothing that moves with me and is comfortable, stays in place, and allows me to still be presentable.”Follow Kimmie Smith on Social Media!Want more fashion tips on all things athleisure? It’s easy to feel a little jealous of kids playing together outside. It brings us back to a time before adult responsibilities.
You can’t make your obligations go away, but special guest Teresa Bergen says that outdoor activities can work wonders on your physical and mental well-being. According to her, it doesn’t matter how old or able you are. Everyone can benefit from a little fresh air and exercise.
“A lot of studies are saying being outside helps with getting better sleep, better concentration, decreasing stress, stimulating creativity, making you feel overall a little better,” Teresa explains.
Teresa Bergen is a Portland, Oregon-based health, fitness and travel writer. She’s a yoga teacher, a certified personal trainer and, of course, a huge outdoor enthusiast.
Most Accessible Outdoor Activities for Non-Outdoorsy People
Not everyone is an outside person and not everyone has a great capacity for physical activity. Luckily, there are still plenty of things you can do outdoors without putting too much stress on your body.
“I’m a big believer in beginners going on group activities,” Teresa advises. “I would just go on an easy, guided kayak tour. I like the guide because if you do fall in, he’s responsible for pulling you back out of the water.”
And there’s still plenty to do in the winter - and it doesn’t have to be downhill skiing.
“For those of you who are in colder climates, at least in winter, snowshoeing is a really nice alternative to scarier stuff, like skiing,” Teresa says. “It’s just like taking a walk in the snow. It’s a little harder than walking and it’s much easier than skiing.”
The Wackiest Outdoor Activities You’ve Never Heard Of
Still not interested in the outdoors? Maybe you need a little something different. REALLY different.
Like goat yoga.
“This is a trend originating from Oregon sweeping the country,” Teresa explains. “Where you do yoga with goats wandering around. They’re very cute, which makes it kind of funny so people don’t take themselves so seriously while doing the poses. If the pose is really hard, you can stop and pet the goat.”
What do you think: super cute or super weird?
