  • For many women in their 20’s and 30’s, the tick of the biological clock can be deafening. We’re told our fertility falls off a cliff at 35 years old, so if we want children, we’d better get moving. When you add on messaging around the desire to be a “young” mum to keep up with your children, this only adds to the pressure that many women feel to make a decision that they don’t feel ready to make.

But what if women’s fertility didn’t fall off a cliff at 35? What if it was a gradual decline rather than a sharp cliff? And what if we had role models of women having children later in their life to see that it’s not only possible, but can be just as good (and maybe even better!) than having children younger.

In this episode Laura speaks with two women at different stages in their motherhood journey. Leonie had her first child at 30 years old and wishes she’d waited longer. Sharyn had her first child at 43 years old and has no trouble keeping up with him.

Laura also speaks with Dr Karin Hammarberg, Senior Research Fellow in the Monash University School of Public Health, about the myth that women’s fertility falls off a cliff at 35.

  • It’s a mixed bag this week! Steph has a raspy voice (the sick kind…not the sexy kind) and Laura has a story about a dryer gone wrong and she wants to know what you would do if you were in the same situation.

Then Steph shares the decision she recently made to get her IUD removed.

And we call relationship coach (and friend of the podcast) Megan Luscombe to ask for her advice on the question: “how do I start a conversation with my partner that I don’t want to have?”

  • The most common fear we heard from you while planning this series, was what children would do to your career. Progression, relevancy, loss of superannuation, loss of identity, and comments like "why would you have kids if you're going to go back to work," all contribute to women making the decision to have children. And with increased rates of homelessness among women in Australia, and women retiring with 28% less superannuation than men, these fears are not baseless.

But having children doesn’t have to end or derail your career. Children could even help your career.

In this episode Laura speaks with two women on different sides of the career & motherhood journey.

Founder & coach Janey Martino had three children under 3 in her early 30’s while her career was on a high. She continued working and now that her children are teenagers, she is able to role model to them what working parenthood looks like.

Britt Austin loves her career in sports marketing so she created a plan that would help her return to work four months after giving birth to her first baby in April.

  • If you're talking to people about the decision to have children it’s likely you’ve heard a version of this - “parenting is really hard so if you’re not 100% sure that you want children…don’t do it”.

This episode is here to challenge that idea. The reasons people say not to have children are very convincing - you’ll never sleep again, your relationship will never be the same, you’ll never have sex again, you’ll lose your weekends. Basically your life as you know it will be over.

But it's also the best decision some people ever make.

In this episode Laura speaks with three women who didn’t feel an innate calling to be mothers, but now that they have children, they wouldn’t have it any other way.

Rebecca was adamant she didn’t want children until she hit her 30’s and a death in the family made her reconsider. Alyssa’s pregnancy took her and her partner by surprise. And Melanie faced more hurdles than most conceiving her two children.

  • Whether it’s biological, circumstantial, financial, environmental, a result of trauma, or simply because you don’t want to, the reasons why people decide to be childfree are as diverse as the reasons why people decide to be parents. For many people, the decision to be childfree is met with comments like “you’ll change your mind,” or “you won’t know real love until you have a child,” or “what if you regret it?”. And with so few childfree role models showing us what a childfree life could look like, these responses can be hard to deny.

In this episode, Laura speaks with three childfree women.

Danni Duncan is a New Zealand based childfree content creator who has dedicated her life to showing people that a childfree life is not only possible, but can be totally fulfilling and empowering.

Amelia is a member of our KICPOD community who made the decision not to have children based on her own childhood.

And finally, Karen made the decision to be childfree despite having the desire to be a parent. Now she’s in her 50’s she is so happy with the decision she made.

  • You meet someone, you get married, you have children. Right? That’s been the status quo for so long that it can be hard to imagine an alternative. For so many people who don’t feel called to be a parent, that path doesn’t feel right. But if you’ve grown up in a world where everyone you know, and everyone you follow, and every character in every movie and every TV show is getting married and having children, how do you distinguish what you want versus what society wants you to want? And if you do decide to have children…does your whole purpose have to switch to motherhood?

To help answer these questions Laura speaks with parenthood clarity mentor Ann Davidman. Ann and Denise L. Carlini wrote the book ‘Motherhood - Is It For Me?’ and Ann runs an online Motherhood Clarity Course and Fatherhood Clarity Course for people struggling with indecision.

Laura asks Ann: why do we feel shame over not knowing if we want to have children? What is the difference between our desire for children vs our decision to have children? Can we have more than one purpose in life? And most importantly…how do we start to figure all of this out?

  • Having children is one of the biggest decisions we'll ever make.

And for many people between the ages of 20 - 40, who don't feel called to be a parent, this question can be all-consuming. It was for Laura.

Last year Laura opened up on the podcast for the first time about her anxieties about having children. Your messages of support, encouragement, and "I feel exactly the same as you," are what inspired this miniseries.

'Do I Want Kids' is for everyone who is sitting with the decision.

Over 7 episodes hear Laura speak with people from all walks of life; from parenthood mentors to child-free advocates, career-driven professionals, stay-at-home mums, young and older parents, relationship experts, medical specialists and finally her own husband Dalton, about this decision.

New episodes will publish every Wednesday and Friday.

  • We talk a lot about rebuilding our relationship to food but we don’t talk as much about our relationship to exercise. Off the back of Laura’s HIIT classes in the Kic app, and the D&M we responded to last week about listening to your body, we wanted to talk about it. And just like our relationship to food - even when you’re in a good spot with exercise - past behaviours can sneak up on you when you least expect it.

  • Jess Sanders is a social worker and children’s author. Her latest book ‘You Can Do Hard Things - A Little One’s Guide For Not Giving Up’ helps children see disappointments as opportunities.

A growth mindset empowers children to believe in themselves and reach their full potential. From building blocks, to learning times tables, children are constantly faced with difficulties, and a growth mindset helps children believe they are capable of overcoming these difficulties, if not today, then one day.

In this conversation, Steph speaks with Jess about what a growth mindset actually means, how parents can model a growth mindset themselves, why children should experience failure and disappointment and what they can learn from it, not trying to “fix” our children’s emotions and giving children the tools to build their self-confidence.

  • This episode is tough but a really important conversation for every parent and person with young people in their lives. Grooming refers to an older child or adult establishing a trusting relationship with a child or their family to sexually abuse or exploit the child. The average age that a child is abused is 6.8 years old and 90% of children who are abused know their abuser.

To help make sense of it all, Steph speaks with Jayneen Sanders. Jayneen is a mum of three, author and educator who writes children’s books on body boundaries, respect, consent, body safety, feelings and emotions.

In this episode, they speak about what grooming actually is, the red flags parents can look out for, how parents can live with the fear of letting their children out of their sights, what to do if you suspect your child is being groomed, and what support exists.

  • People are commenting on Laura's TikTok telling her she should divorce her husband Dalton. And you know what? Laura couldn't care less.

Plus! Steph had a moment when she realised something she was doing to “save time” actually ended up worse off than if she’d put in effort to begin with. So we asked you…what do you to “save” time that ends up taking you longer? If you hate putting away your washing or taking out the recycling, we see you.

And hi Alice! You guys love seeing Alice on the Kic Instagram and TikTok so we brought her into the studio to say hello.

  • If you haven’t been to kinder since you were IN kinder, you’ve probably forgotten what it’s all about and what the big deal is. So as Harvey gets closer to kindergarten age, Steph speaks with early childhood consultant Catharine Hydon about all things kindergarten.

They talk the big things, like: what do our kids actually learn at kinder, how does it help them transition to school, and how is my kid developing emotionally and social at that age? And the little things, like: how early do I have to enrol, dealing with tears at drop off, and does my kid need to be fully toilet trained to attend?

  • What do you do to feel safe while running or walking alone? We saw this video on Instagram where a woman lists everything she does to feel safe while running outside alone and we wanted to talk about it. Plus Steph & Laura share their own experiences of feeling unsafe while running and walking by themselves.

Then we talk getting over a breakup. A community member asked for tips to help get over a breakup and we asked you for your advice, from dropping 20k on a horse, to moving interstate, to training for a marathon, to just sitting in it and being sad for a while. Thank you for sharing and our hearts go out to anyone currently experiencing heartbreak ❤️

  • In January, one of our Kic community members, Ellie, messaged us on Instagram asking to share her story of being diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer diagnosis at just 31 years old.

Ellie noticed a lump in one of her breasts last August. When it didn’t go away, Ellie made an appointment to get it checked out by her GP. Within days, Ellie underwent an ultrasound and biopsy to find out it was breast cancer, which led to more biopsies, an egg retrieval and chemotherapy. Ellie’s plans for a holiday in Europe, starting a family, and her work as a midwife & nurse, were all put on pause while she underwent six months of chemo.

We spoke to Ellie a few weeks before she was having a surgery to determine whether or not she would need a double mastectomy.

After our conversation with Ellie, we speak with Kirsten Pilatti, the CEO of Breast Cancer Network Australia, about the importance of doing regular breast checks and seeking help if you notice something looks or feels different.
