  • What can I tell you about Dai Henwood?

There's the stuff that you may already know- he is funny, talented, successful and popular. Everyone loves Dai.

Then there’s the stuff you may not know- he is one of the kindest people you could ever meet, generous, caring, resilient, strong, brave, intelligent, introspective, thoughtful....

He was diagnosed with incurable cancer in 2020.

He went public with the news in 2022.

And since then, he has somehow managed to coexist with this hideous disease and adjust to his new normal.

This year alone, amongst other work commitments, while undergoing grueling treatment, he has written a book and made an incredible 3-part documentary about his cancer journey. We recorded this chat around the same time this documentary came out, so we do chat about that at length.

If you missed it, you can watch it on demand on ThreeNow: https://www.threenow.co.nz/shows/live-and-let-dai/1725307694444

Dai was a guest on the podcast last year. This episode is an update on the life of Dai.

This episode has been brought to you by the legends at the Generate KiwiSaver Scheme.

When it comes to KiwiSaver, “set it and forget it” is not a good plan. You could miss out on extra money simply by choosing the wrong fund for your age and stage.

Generate pride themselves on giving great KiwiSaver advice – something they’ve won awards for.

When they signed on as a podcast sponsor over a year ago, I met with one of their advisors to talk through my KiwiSaver goals and objectives so I can personally swear by it.

Getting some good advice now can help you get your future sorted.

  • Margo and Rosa Flannagan are Two Raw Sisters.

These two South Island siblings have carved a niche for themselves as New Zealand’s go-to when it comes to plant-based meals.

These girls are such fun company: they are driven and successful. And open books. So, I jumped at the chance to have them back on my podcast.

On top of recently starting their own podcast and releasing an app, they have also put out their FIFTH recipe book- More Salad.

This is an update into the lives of Rosa and Margo:

Marriage, pregnancy, a move to Melbourne and even a peep show in Amsterdam.

We also go back and explore the early years-why they hated each other as teens and how they healed severe health issues using food as medicine.

The aesthetic of their books and brand are beautiful and perfect. But their lives, like all of us, are imperfect.

This is part of the Two Raw Sisters story.

  • Mark Graham is the greatest NZ rugby league player of all time!

The G.O.A.T acronym gets thrown round a lot these days but the man known as "Sharko" IS the real deal:

He was named NZ rugby league player of the century.

He’s the first Kiwi inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame.

18 tests for the Kiwis as captain and Warriors coach for 2 seasons.

And he did all this playing in an era when rugby league was so brutal he broke almost every bone in his body.

Now this humble Kiwi legend has a documentary all about his life and career made by his son, Luke. It’s called Sharko- look out for it. I’ve seen it twice and I love it.

This podcast is a small part of the Mark Graham story.

Thanks so much to my show sponsors, the Generate KiwiSaver scheme who have been supporting the show for over a year now.

If you have a KiwiSaver and it is not with Generate you should consider switching over. There is a reason these guys win so many awards.

“Set it and forget it” is the strategy that most kiwis adopt when it comes to their KiwiSaver. And that is NOT a good plan- You could miss out on extra money simply by choosing the wrong fund for your age and stage of life.

Generate pride themselves on giving great KiwiSaver advice. I have experienced it first hand and, I know I’m supposed to say nice things about them, but it genuinely was helpful, informative, quick and easy.

Getting some good advice now can help you get your future sorted.

  • Sonya Williams is an absolute powerhouse businesswoman who has played a big part in how Kiwis invest- her and a group of friends started a company called Sharesies in 2016. Fast forward 7 years and...

700,000 Kiwis and Aussies now call themselves customers, including 40,000 children.

    Sharesies employs 230 people

The company is valued at $500 million

And Sonya and the Sharesies team are just getting started!

This is a small part of the Sonya Williams story.

We talk in depth about Sharesies: the past present and future. As well as lots of other stuff:

The impact of her dad’s brain injury when she was 16.

Why she wore her mum’s clothes to her first job interview

Why she is fiercely defensive of her hometown, Levin.

Why the first year of being a mum was so much more challenging that the first year of starting up a business.

And so much more from a woman who has helped turn a simple idea into a groundbreaking business venture.

This conversation was both easy and challenging- easy because we are family. But challenging because Sonya is so humble and unassuming- she has achieved so much, but definitely isn’t one to sing her own praises…or take compliments from podcasting cousins!

  • Sir John Key was the Prime Minister of NZ from 2008 until he stood down towards the end of his third term in 2016.

These days he spends his time on various boards. And when he isn’t flying in his helicopter, you’ll find him on a golf course or with his wife Bronagh.

Sir John came into the brand new Podlab studios and was generous enough to give me two hours of his time to cover a wide range of topics including:

    His relationship with Christopher Luxon

His thoughts on Trump and American politics

His reflections on running NZ during the Christchurch earthquakes

Holidaying with the Queen, the infamous three-way handshake and other gaffes, regrets from his time as PM and so much more!

  • Tony Johnson is one of New Zealand’s greatest sports broadcasters of all time.

He has been part of the country’s sports media landscape for decades and, despite being retirement age, is still at the top of his game as the voice of rugby in New Zealand..

We cover some of the Tony Johnson story here. On his first long form podcast ever:

Hosting TV3 News with John Hawkesby when the station launched in the 90s.

Reflections on working with Paul Holmes on his Newstalk ZB breakfast radio show.

His health scare with prostate cancer. And why he has now become an ambassador for men’s health.

Then the commentary stuff: his preparation and perfectionism, the bloopers, his thoughts on Scott Robertson and Leon McDonald and much more.

This episode is packed full of great stories and insights from a great New Zealander who has seen it all, done it all. AND is still doing it all.

  • Lucy Spoors and Brooke Francis are rowers who won gold medals at the Paris Olympics in the women's double scull.

What made this achievement even more remarkable is the back story- they won silver at the Tokyo Olympics then took time off from sport to start their families.

Lucy had a baby boy. Brooke had a baby girl.

In this podcast you will hear first-hand how these Supremum’s overcame sleep deprivation, societal expectations, and the demands of high-performance rowing to win Olympic Gold with an incredible skin-of-the-teeth victory in Paris.

  • This is Justin Marshall part 2

Justin Marshall is one of the most polarizing rugby players and commentators of all time. People either love him or loathe him- after meeting him for this very lengthy conversation, I am definitely in the first camp. Me oh my I enjoyed it yes boy

Justin played 81 games for the All Blacks between 1995 and 2005. And won 5 Super Rugby titles for the Crusaders

Since retiring he has become a very successful commentator for Sky Sports. And is now on a podcast called The Good, the bad and the rugby NZ.

Heaps of All Black nostalgia here including his feud with Byron Kelleher, his transition from player to commentator and how he copes with criticism, the origins of his viral saying “Me oh my yes boy” and so much more.

(By the way, I would love your feedback on splitting a long episode too. Let me know if it’s helpful or annoying:

This is Justin Marshall part 1: We talk about his early years in Southland, including going off the rails as a teen resulting in run-ins with the police. His early jobs at the freezing works before rugby turned professional, his competitiveness, his temper and much more.

  • You possibly don’t know the name, David Niethe. But I promise you, this is one hell of an episode.

David is the author of the book "The Winning Mindset."

And he is most certainly qualified to write a book about personal success and resilience.

For the past 30-odd years he has carved a reputation for himself as New Zealand's leading mental performance coach. He has worked closely with the likes of Lydia Ko, Israel Adesanya, the Black Ferns, the Breakers and many other high performance individuals and teams.

He started working with Lydia and Izzy when she was still in primary school, and he was yet to have his first MMA fight.

In this episode we talk about some of these legends David has worked with to get an insight into their mindsets. Then we will get to learn about David Niethe and what makes him tick.

And along the way you will hopefully pick up tons of little ideas for how YOU can get closer to your goals, overcome personal fears, build resilience and generally get more out of your own life.

I do need to warn you. David does not pull punches. His tough love approach means he swears. A lot. If that’s going to be an issue for you, you might like to skip this episode.

10 Key Takeaways From This Episode:

Vision boards help clarify goals and aspirations.

Specificity in goal setting is crucial for success.

Challenging self-limiting beliefs is essential for growth.

Creating an alter ego can enhance focus and performance.

Building confidence often comes from overcoming adversity.

Self-pride is essential for personal empowerment.

Striving for excellence should be a goal in every endeavor.

Overcoming the victim mentality is key to personal growth.

How we speak to ourselves shapes our reality and performance

Discipline is more important than motivation in achieving long-term success.

  • Imagine being diagnosed with terminal cancer and told you’d be lucky to make it another 12 months. Then given a ZERO percent chance of surviving 18 months.

This impossibly difficult future was staring Di Foster in the face 15 years ago.

Spoiler alert- she’s still here and rather than just surviving. She is thriving! And doing incredible work as an inspirational keynote speaker and mindset and business mentor.

In a nutshell, she is a woman who is living her best life, and she thinks all of us deserve to be doing the same.

She is much more than a cancer survivor. But that is part of her story…and it’s one hell of a yarn! This podcast is a very small part of the Di Foster story.

  • Sean Plunket is one of New Zealand’s best-known broadcasters.

And, I would say, probably the most controversial and polarizing. Because of this, there is a lot to unpack with Sean.

Sean has worked for just about every media company in NZ…Newstalk ZB, Mediaworks, TVNZ, TV3.

He also hosted the prestigious Radio New Zealand show “Morning Report” for 13 years.

And now he gets to call the shots by running his own online new media company, The Platform.

Whether you love, hate or have no opinion formed about Sean, my hope is that by the time you get to the end of this podcast you will have a better understanding of who he is and his why.

+ He is the driving force behind the juggernaut betting syndicate called Boys Get Paid.

+ He hosts New Zealand’s biggest financial podcast, Keep the Change.

+ And runs his own accounting business Next Advisory.

The second part is where Luke answers YOUR questions about money. This is super informative with great takeaways for all of us.

I’ve followed Luke for ages. But this is the first time we met. He is a Kiwi who is striving for growth and greatness and is refusing to put any limits on how big he can think.

  • Jordan Watson is much better known by his alter ego “How to Dad”

He is one of New Zealand’s most loved content creators.

And it all started with a random video for a mate that was not even intended to be for public consumption that blew up literally making him an overnight celebrity. Instead of being a one clip wonder he has turned it into a wildly successful long-term career.

His online stats are eye watering:

    2.8 million Facebook followers

    1.4 million you tube subscribers

    1,1 million Tik-Tok followers.

    And another 850,000 Instagram followers.

He also has a podcast with Clint Roberts called "The Parenting Hangover" and his own line of unbreakable jandals.

Somehow he also manages to be a good real-life husband and dad, and fit in some serious charity work for Kids Can.

This podcast is a glimpse into the life and mind of the man behind the internet fame. There is lots of cool insights in here for anyone who is keen to learn more about how to make an impact online. But also, it’s just a good chance to get to know a very creative, clever and cool New Zealander.

  • Nigel Latta, New Zealand’s best-known psychologist, shared a video to Facebook on the evening of September 5, 2024, announcing he has been living with cancer.

After sharing his shocking news, he received an outpouring of love and media articles because we all feel like we know Nigel Latta- even Lorde's mum left a comment giving Nigel credit for how she raised her kids.

For the past 15 years, Nigel has been responsible for some wildly successful TV projects including the Beyond the Darkland’s series (which I loved) and the politically incorrect series with episodes devoted to parents, teenagers and grown-ups. He is also the author of seven best-selling books.

I had never met Nigel before this podcast but, like a lot of Kiwis, I felt like I knew him. Nigel is everybody’s mate- a national treasure.

  • Jamie Pennell is a former NZ army and SAS member who has been awarded the countries second highest military honor..

He now has a book out about his unimaginable life experiences called “Serviceman J”

In this episode we talk about his early years and his initial decision to join the army.

What’s involved with becoming a member of the SAS.

His deployments to Afghanistan and encounters with Taliban suicide bombers.

    Fighting alongside Wilie Apiata,

Being awarded the NZ Gallantry star.

How he found himself again after leaving the military and adjusted back to civilian life and much more.

This episode is an edge-of-your-seat and deeply human look into the life of a dedicated serviceman. Jamie was so generous with his time and experiences, which involve revisiting some pretty grim situations, so I hope you guys like it.

I like having a small sports bet every now and then, but I am well aware that it does a lot of damage to some people so I was keen to get an understanding of the work they do.

His All Black debut. And the intimidation of being a newbie in a star-studded team.

The controversy of being played at Centre for the 1999 RWC

His relationship with John Mitchell, the coach who ended his All Black career.

His bittersweet last game in NZ which saw him get a standing ovation at Wellingtons cake tin.

His life post rugby, his time on Celebrity Treasure Island and much much more.

  • Sequoia Schmidt. Wow- where do I begin? How can you possibly give just a one paragraph intro to someone who has had such a unique and full on 33 years of life.

Let’s start with the cool stuff:

After being born and raised in Napier, Sequoia set up her own publishing company in Texas at 16 and has written best-selling books. She also likes to do extreme stuff in her spare time, like base jumping, skydiving, mountain climbing, silence retreats.

Then there’s the less glamourous stuff:

A tumultuous childhood with family dynamics that can only be described as complicated which saw her end in foster care and ultimately moving to the US to the care of an incredible grandparent. Then losing her dad and brother to an avalanche on K2 in Pakistan in 2013 and going on a mission to find their remains. We discuss how these events reshaped her life and led her to explore her fears and resilience. And the lessons learned from her past (oh, and I forgot to mention a lifetime ban from the Warehouse in Hawkes Bay).

There is a lot to unpack with the Sequoia Schmidt story, and there is no way we could do it justice in just one podcast…but we do unpack a lot. I loved this chat and I hope you do too.
