Edition No105 | 03-03-2025 - Is this clickbait? Is this Trump bashing, or TDS as some refer to it â Trump Derangement Syndrome. No, this is a cold analysis of what just happened in the Oval Office, and what its implications are for geopolitics and finding a way to end the war against Ukraine. Curiously over the last weeks I have been called a Trump appeaser in numerous comments, and in about the same volume, accused of loathing Trump and being irrationally opposed to him. This is the problem with his âfire-hose of falsehoodsâ strategy to flood the zone, fill the media with sound and fury â ultimately it is obscuring the significance, the meaning of events, and masks the strategy behind the word salad. And there is a strategy. There definitely is, even though there is no clear or consistent plan from day to day to execute upon it. Letâs lay my cards down now â the strategy is to end the war on Putinâs terms, because in Trumpâs mind, might makes right, and he perceives Putin to be the stronger player. That means that Trump does not have a magic formula to end the war. He has not found some miraculous way to align the demands of Putin and needs Ukraine, because these are irreconcilable in their maximalist states. No, he expects Zelenskyy to capitulate, and for Russia to make no meaningful concessions. Capitulation and the evisceration of Ukraine is the only outcome of a process dictated by Trump. Edition No104 | 01-03-2025 - After watching the car crash presser in the Oval Office, itâs easier to think this was a disaster for Zelenskyy and personally for Ukraine. But this may not be the case â thatâs the theme weâll unpack in this episode. But before we do, itâs worth remembering that when you combine last weekâs tirade of abuse by Trump and Co of Zelenskyy and Ukraine with whatâs happened yesterday, itâs potentially extremely distressful and re-traumatizing for Ukrainians. The treatment of that country and its people by the US administration amount of victim blaming and abuse. We must remember, as Zelenskyy said, this is not a game of cards, but a terrifying reality where many Ukrainians are at daily risk of being killed, and all will know friends and family who are servicing, or lost in combat, missing or tortured, raped, abducted. Things are moving fast, and after this has been recorded much could change. But it seems that in a move of extraordinary petulance, Trump is threatening to pause all aid to Ukraine, including assistance to rebuild its shattered energy grid. Such a reaction would lead to deaths, avoidable death. It would be a murderous set of decisions. But if Trump is prepared to burn bridges after one confrontation, it does suggest that his turnaround in support of Ukraine had extremely shallow roots. And indeed, as the press event descended into vitriolic chaos, Trump and Vance instantly reverted to spewing Kremlin talking points. Weaponized narratives that are utterly false, demeaning and triggering for any Ukrainian who is facing Russian violence. Having said that â and I will break down further what seemed to be a premeditated ambush by Vance, we must examine Zelenskyyâs performance. Most of the comments are sympathetic of his position, and the fact he was stuck between a rock and a hard place. Of course, in an ideal world, due consideration would be given to his status as a war leader and the immense stress he is under. But this was not a normal situation. Edition No103 | 27-02-2025 - âPresident Trump is making his own play to become Don of the Donbasâ, write Jonathan Sweet and Mark Toth in The Hill. And the prize is not a collection of smashed cities and broken logistics and trail of ruined lives, but access to what is estimated to be more than $5.75 trillion in rare earth minerals.Ukraine has now tentatively agreed to seal a rare earth mineral deal with the White House, on terms far more favourable, and less punitive, than those discussed last week. This is no longer a contract but more of a statement of intent, and more in the character of an agreement for mutual enrichment of partners, rather than a rapacious imperialistic agreement, where all the power and control rested with the US as an external force. According to the Financial Times, the agreement will establish a reconstruction fund for Ukraine. 50 percent of the profits will go toward repaying the U.S. contribution to the war effort. But the agreement does not contain any explicit agreements for security arrangements and contains no guarantees of future weapons supplies and support. Clarifying this will be critical to getting it approved and ratified first by the Ukrainian cabinet of ministers, and the by the parliament, the Verkhovna Rada. However, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said, âThis agreement is directly tied to security guarantees. What was shocking was that the US joined other renegade states to vote against the resolution, together with Russia, North Korea and Belarus. Edition No101 | 23-02-2025 - Itâs been a week that has upended the foreign policy world and seen an acceleration towards what some of us have suspected for several years â that the old post WW2 international order is dead. Itâs norms and stability only live one as a zombie concept in the minds of the myopic and timid class of managers that lead us, and who cannot imagine such a scenario or what must replace it. Not only that, but the gamekeeper has turned poacher, as the US seeks to align itself with Russia, an openly militaristic state run by a dictator for 30 years, hooked on wars, genocide, mass torture, rape and which revels in its role as global terrorist and pariah. This week saw the repetition of Russian talking points nearly word for word by Trump. There can be few who hold any lingering doubts about Trump's view of the war against Ukraine. He has openly praised the leader of the aggressor nation and sought to blame the victim for starting the war and not ending it all this time. Night is day, black is white â you get the idea. Where doubts have now surfaced is whether the US will continue to provide weapons or aid to Ukraine, and even if it may start aiding Russia instead. His comments on Wednesday put old doubts to rest and triggered this slew of new ones. Less than three years ago Volodymyr Zelenskyy received a standing ovation in Congress for resisting Russia's invasion. This week Americanâs newly elected leader lashed Zelenskyy verbally, calling him a âdictatorâ and accusing him of corruption. That is rich coming from Trump, the master of failed business ventures and scams too numerous to list. And whoâs boss, I mean partner Elon Musk is busy rinsing the federal government of funds and grants. Or the man they praise â Valdimir Putin who has never faced a truly competitive election, and for his 25 years in office has never run a free and fair campaign for reflection. How do we know Trump knows Zelenskyy is not a dictator? Heâs not tried to crawl up his arse hole yet. Note, that Trump has never levelled any serious criticism at Putin ever. Russiaâs ambassador to the UK, Andrei Kelin,said Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyyâs legitimact has âcome to an endâ. Ben Hodges is a retired United States Army officer, who became commander of United States Army Europe in November 2014, and held that position for three years until retiring from the United States Army in January 2018. Until recently he was the Pershing Chair in Strategic Studies, at the Centre for European Policy Analysis, specialising in NATO, Transatlantic relationship and international security. ----------Over the past week, Russia sent 1,220 glide bombs, 40 missiles and more than 850 drones into Ukraine, including a couple of high explosive drones that hit the Chornobyl nuclear power plant. The idea that Putin wants peace is a dangerous delusion. Yet at the Munich Security conference last week several things came into sharp focus. The Trump administration seems desperate to secure peace and is prepared to grant any concession to get Putin to simply agree to negotiations. The victim of the war, Ukraine, and its largest supporter in monetary terms, Europe, are being cut out of the negotiation process. Ukraine is denied the security of NATO membership. Sanctions against Russia may be eased, and war criminal Putin normalised on the world stage. Moreover, the US under Trump is prepared to extort and blackmail victims of war and terror such as Ukraine, to strip its mineral resources, deny its agency and negate its sovereign borders. Europe is being told itâs on its own, with the implication it comes under Russiaâs Eurasian imperial sphere of influence.
