WHATâS IN IT FOR ME IN NASHVILLE?
Join Craig as he once again welcomes another amazing guest in this latest episode of Talk Tech To Me. Introducing Elise Cambournac, President and CEO of Greater Nashville Technology Council, and a tech enthusiast. Elise will be sharing her background and some amazing insights about the current tech scene in Greater Nashville, and what awaits the future.
TALK TECH HIGHLIGHTS
Introducing Elise CambournacGetting into the tech sceneDonât be afraid to fail and fail fastNashvilleâs influence on her healthcare careerNashville staying relevant as a tech hubThe importance of starting young to foster a communityChallenges that the NTC will face in the futureWhatâs next for Greater NashvilleTALK TECH MOMENTS
Elise: Make the decision to fail, and fail fast
âThe other advice I would say is, that is super helpful, and it was helpful to me, to my career, is helping my teams at the time, but you can be in the team, make a decision to fail, and fail fast, and being decisive about this.â
Elise: Expect to fail, and give it a shot again
âNot expecting to fail is a little too cocky. Like, â âYeah, I'm going to be alright. I'm going to have it right the first time.â â But it's setting it into the culture that is acceptable, and that is that the recognition of the failure is almost as important as the failure itself, it's the key now, you can beat your head against the wall so many times, and not really realize it hurts you, you should feel it the first time and give it a second shot, but don't give it 10 shotsâŠâ

Craig - The power of a good presentation:
âGoing back to the concept about anxiety - performance anxiety. That is a real thing for artists, but I feel like it's a real thing for entrepreneurs in general. The difference between securing a seed funding and not, truly is a good presentation.â
Soula - Excellence is not achieved alone:
âWhen you really want to excel on something, the first thing is you never do it alone. I didn't become the singer that I am on my own. Yes, I was born with the gift. I didn't cultivate the gift on my own, I had to take 1000s of hours of lessons.â

Beth Bergmann used to play basketball when she was in college and being the point guard gave her the experience of calling the shots. Today, sheâs calling the shots in a different way, along the tech space, as the SVP for Solution Strategy and Brand Experience at Telaid Industries, Inc. Beth on exploring the world of technology:
âI really decided technology is where I wanted to be. There are grand dreams of working on Nike campaigns or Adidas and the big agency. Now I kind of decided, I'm gonna take a different path here, I'm going to explore technologyâ
Beth says to take risks and experience failures:
âOut of the box thinking is super important is be okay with failure, be okay with taking risks, I always say to my team, and when I look back at what worked, you have to fail fast, but it's okay to fail and know how to pivot.â
Beth wears different hats:
âI do enjoy wearing different hats. For me, it's all about learning, and learning inspires me.â
Bethâs experience in calling the shots:
âI was a point guard, which means, I was calling plays, I was calling the defense, I was making sure we're in the right formation, we're executing everything. So that is very much parallel to what the strategy looks like.â

You find humility or it will find you, simple, short, yet so deep. This is one of the many lessons we will get from Andrew Kerr, CEO & Managing Partner of FortyAU, and the author of âThe Humility Imperativeâ. Join Craig Cartwright as he welcomes Andrew, and they will talk about creativity in the technology process and why humility is imperative for leaders, only here, in the latest episode of Talk Tech To Me.
HIGHLIGHTS
Introducing Andrew KerrTechnology is great when people are using itApplying sports coaching skills in managing peopleBeing a differentiatorThe need to have a creative spaceWhat does FortyAU meanCreativity in the processHumility is imperative for a leaderQUOTES
Andrew: âTechnology is great, but you have to get humans to use it. Right. So that's really where I started my career in tech was with the government, trying to get people to pick up and use this new technology.â
Andrew: âThat's something that we really strive for, we think is a differentiator, because when you come to our company, and you say, Hey, I've got a technical problem. We don't really care what language it is, because we think we can help almost anyone that's out there.â
Andrew: âWhen I say humility is imperative for leaders, I absolutely mean it, every leader needs to look at whatever your relative level of humility or arrogance is, you need to look at that and walk in the direction or maybe sometimes run in the direction of humility.â
Andrew: âIf you can't continue to learn and take in new information if you think you've got it all figured out, you're the one who's going to be disrupted.â

From being an Economics major who just really has a high interest in math, to a full-on data scientist, Kylie Taylor is really making her voice heard and building a name for herself. In this latest episode of Talk Tech To Me, Craig Cartwright welcomes Kylie, as she shares her journey as a woman in tech and how her interest in math has led her to her new career in data science.
HIGHLIGHTS
Kylie's professional journeyMoving into NashvilleBenefits of remote workBeing a woman in techBenefits and dangers of groupthinkImportance of having a communityGetting into data scienceGame-changing techQUOTES
Kylie: âI think what makes techs creative is the fact that you have these really diverse talent pools that are contributing to it. And there's this amazing community in Tech where, you know, I've developed something, I want to share it with you, I want you to learn from what I learned, and take it make it your own.â
Kylie: âI've noticed with the pandemic and everyone moving to this virtual setting, even my team has benefited from having a completely remote team. So no longer are we limited to sourcing talent from the New York City area. Instead, we have the entire United States, we have all UK and Europe.â
Kylie: âI think groupthink can be sort of a dangerous thing to get into, especially in tech, because when you have teams of people working on a project and a data product together, the data product is the combination of all their minds together, right?â
Kylie: âMy like advice to any data scientist is, to determine your code of ethics and work for a company that matches those. Yeah, yeah. And do your work that aligns with that.â

Zap: âI think working at the Nashville entrepreneurs center, I managed membership and did a lot of events. It is what got me involved in the startup community so deeply because it was such a cool opportunity to get to meet so many founders, so many ecosystem builders and really see the entire startup ecosystem.â
Zap: â10 years from now we'll have more and more success stories. I want to see those founders kind of like donating back their time, their energy, their resources to keep that momentum going, that I think they're receiving right now, and kind of keep that friendly business community alive.â
Craig: âNashville operates with their business leaders giving back is not the norm, and it actually can be quite sharp, like at these other locations, these traditional places like Silicon Valley.â
Craig: âThe talent pool here is insane. I mean, every time ultimately being here for several months now, every time that we have a new hire, more often than not, they just happen to have come from Nashville.â
Zap: âI think the biggest thing is desire to learn. I think that's for any career in technology, because the industry is moving so much, so quickly. There's always new technologies. There's always something new to learn.â
