Putting Dirt in Its Place: The Contemporary Politics of Waste
Conference Keynote Lecture : Zsuzsa Gille (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) - 'Overflows, Agencement, and Inequalities of the Circular Economy'
Convenor
Patrick O'Hare (University of Cambridge)
Summary
This conference explores the socio-material interfaces where waste meets politics in the present. It brings together a group of established and emergent waste scholars from across the social sciences to discuss the contemporary dynamics of waste and waste labour in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. Five themed panels - on infrastructure, labour, circulation, elimination and reconceptualization– provide a structure through which waste will be explored in all its complexity.
Drawing largely on ethnographic research, presenters will debate how legal, regulatory, cultural, bio-political and economic factors influence what is configured and classified as waste. Can we speak of ‘waste regimes’? What role do religion, class and race play in determining the division of waste labour? Are formalization and privatization of waste management leading to the dignification or dispossession of waste workers? Can ethnographic and sociological explorations of the materialities of waste politics challenge normative understandings and definitions of waste, commodity and value? Are ideas like 'zero waste' and the 'circular economy' green modernist fables or realizable policies, and how do they reconfigure existing patterns of accumulation and inequality? -

Episode 1 released: 22nd December. Although Terry left the party early, in March 2015 the echoes of the conversations we had, the jokes we shared and the drinks I brought, still rattle around in my head. So, with help from some friends, I’m sharing them. Stories about great men sometimes miss out the human being underneath. Terry was a world-famous author and a genius. He also possessed a wonderful sense of humour. Sometimes delivered in the same way you wrap an iron bar in a sock. In his case, thankfully, it was often a rod of irony rather than heavy metal. I enjoyed his company and I think he did mine, mostly. I was his ‘warm up act’ the stout party on the stage first. The bugger of it is, he’s left the stage and my fool’s bladder isn’t what it used to be. But anyway, no matter how frequently I need to micturate, I can still sit in front of a microphone long enough to tell you some of my stories. Only the names have been changed to protect the guilty and it may contain nuts. I hope you enjoy them.

Myth Dynamite is a labour of absolute and unequivocal love for ancient mythology. We - Abi and Sarah - met back in 2016 when we both decided to happily sacrifice another year of further study at the altar of the Olympian Gods. We left a year later, with shiny new MA Classics degrees, and a firm friendship. Ever since we've had dinner after dinner (billed as catch ups) that would unsurprisingly result in conversations on myth, and how its many, many stories reflect and refract some of today's issues: sexuality, the self, gender, power, family, respect, and humanity's immutable ability to metamorphose (lovely little Ovid reference for those who know, and for those who don't head over to our first full episode 'One Poet to Rule them All' to find out. A shameless plug, we'll admit it.) It became very clear to us, that we had a lot to say - and we want to share it with people: other people who love myth; people who have some idea of myth; and people who haven't come across ancient Greek and Roman myths before. Hence - after a long time spent developing it (read talking about myth some more) - a shining star, which Myth Dynamite will hopefully be for people, was born (if you haven't, please see Disney's 'Hercules' stat).N.B. This is ancient myth and we're not censoring it. There will be adult content throughout. We hope you have as much fun listening to us rabbit on about myth as we had making this podcast.

Our podcasts are a mix of conversations with a wide range of subject matter experts and enthusiasts, interspersed with the occasional audio drama. Each episode focuses on one person, a group of people or a genre from the world of entertainment that we wish to bring back to the spotlight and who has been lost to history or is in danger of being so.The Arts industries are currently in peril but this is nothing new. The Entertainment industry in all its guises has seen it all before. Political turmoil, plague, poverty, overnight success, sudden failure and the long term closure of theatres are not unique to the 21st century. We are not academics (although luckily some of our prestigious guests are) so don't expect forensic analysis or ground breaking research in every episode. We are entertainers, passionate about our craft, its heritage and its future. And we want to share our enthusiasm with you!
