This is a series of podcast from the Ruskin School of Art. The Ruskin, as it is known, is the Fine Art Department of the University of Oxford. In an intimate and dynamic environment, the school gathers together cutting edge contemporary artists and art theorists with some of the brightest and most creative art students. Fine Art is taught as a living element of contemporary culture with a broad range of historical and theoretical references. Comprising both a flourishing undergraduate programme and a growing Dphil programme (made up of both practice-led and theory-based doctoral students), the Ruskin embodies risk-taking, curiosity, and rigour grounded in a wide sense of the word ‘research’.

Why do we make pictures? What is the importance of a painting or drawing? Or more importantly how do we learn to make them?
These are questions that many prospective students may not ask themselves directly; yet they feel the impetus to pursue a program that answers them.
When we create or make images we are responding to our perception of the world. Creating a likeness of the world is one aspect of making images.
At Deakin, this is certainly one aspect of the Visual Arts program.
As students progress through the program they also may learn how to create something visually from an imagined world, or one that takes a symbolic form or representation.
Visual Arts at Deakin explores representations of the figure and settings by observation of their nature and as students progress through different levels of the course they become acquainted with the ideas of abstraction, pluralist strategies and conceptual development. -

The discipline of Comparative Literature is changing. Its Eurocentric heritage has been challenged by various formulations of ‘world literature’, while new media and new forms of artistic production are bringing urgency to comparative thinking across literature, film, the visual arts and music. The resulting questions of method are both intellectually compelling and central to the future of the humanities. To confront them, our research programme brings together experts from the disciplines of English, Medieval and Modern Languages, Oriental Studies, and Classics, and draws in collaborators from Music, Visual Art, Film, Philosophy and History.
