Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the return of war to Europe has shocked the world and appears to have upended many assumptions about how international politics operates. What are the roots of the crisis in Ukraine and what will be the implications for reshaping Europe? Is this a new moment of Western unity and a reassertion of ‘Western values’ or the return of History and deeper geopolitical tensions? If borders and nation states still need to be taken seriously, how can countries offer solidarity to others?
Speakers:
Alex Voronov, journalist and writer. Since Russia’s invasion he has done several trips to the Ukraine to report from the war zone. Voronov is a former political editor of Eskilstuna-Kuriren, and currently an editorial writer at Liberala Nyhetsbyrån.
Maria Nilsson, Associate Professor of Journalism at the Institute of Media Studies, Stockholm University. Nilsson’s research interests include the politics of representation; questions of power, credibility and agency in visual media practices; and visual journalism and journalism in various historical and current contexts.
Sabine Beppler-Spahl, author and journalist. Chair at the Freiblickinstitut, Germany correspondent for online publication Spiked. -

Bedragarna som lurat personer på motsvarande fem miljarder kronor har sin arbetsplats i ett callcenter i Bulgariens huvudstad Sofia. Kaliber avslöjar hur bedragarna jobbade genom källor inifrån.

Flera svenskar har blivit lurade på pengar i en jättelik internationell bedrägerihärva som just nu utreds av tysk polis. Hör 20-åriga "Nikola" berätta om jobbet hos företaget med bedrägerier som affärsmodell och följ jakten på människorna som anses skyldiga till att ha lurat människor på motsvarande över fem miljarder svenska kronor.
I första delen av granskningen Bluffindustrin träffar Kaliber bland annat med Eva, som när hon närmar sig pensionen efter ett arbetsliv som undersköterska blir sporrad att investera i bitcoin. Efter att ha sett reklam i sociala medier anmäler hon sitt intresse på företaget Qtecks hemsida och blir snabbt uppringd. Hon investerar 2.500 kr till en början, men lång historia kort: det slutar med skulder på 900.000 kr.
Eva polisanmälde Qteck men utredningen lades ner. En annan som också anmält företaget är Anders Överyd i Gällivare, som vi träffar i det här avsnittet.
– Jag var ju under isen då, så jag... Man var ensam och så ringer de och är vältaliga och pratar och… De är ju välformulerade och är jätteduktiga på att snacka och då kunde de ju verkligen få mitt förtroende gentemot dem. Jag var extra sårbar och trodde på allt vad de sa. De blev som kompisar.
Svenska förundersökningar har lagts nedPersoner från Qteck lyckas övertyga Anders om att han borde låna pengar för att investera. Och övertalar honom att han ska låta dem fjärrstyra hans dator för att hjälpa honom med att fylla i låneansökningar.
– Det känns så konstigt att jag ens gick med på det. Det är klart, då tog de över datorn och då tog de allting, säger Anders.
Alla som Kaliber har haft kontakt med om Qteck har polisanmält, men antingen har det inte blivit någon förundersökning alls eller så har den lagts ned.
Razzia i BulgarienMen i Tyskland jobbar polisen med en stor utredning efter att de fått rapporter om liknande bedrägerier. För drygt två år sedan anmälde någon i den lilla tyska universitetsstaden Göttingen att han blivit lurad på motsvarande två och en halv miljon kronor av företaget FX-leader. Och snart visar det sig att människor runtom i Tyskland fallit offer för samma liga, berättar åklagaren Manuel Recha.
– And the scam in Germany quickly was about 20 million Euros, altogether, säger Manuel Recha.
En del av pengarna, motsvarande tvåhundra miljoner svenska kronor, visade sig ha hamnat på Malta, en del hos en tysk privatperson.
Genom att följa bedragarnas digitala fotspår på servrar i Tyskland och Nederländerna hittar de också ett ukrainskt företag som sköter FX-leaders hemsida. De blir säkra på att det FX-leader sysslat med är rena bedrägerier. Därifrån letar de tyska myndigheterna sig vidare, och upptäcker kopplingar till ett bulgariskt företag, ett företag som Kaliber lyckats identifiera som Dortome.
I oktober 2021 genomförs en razzia i Dortomes lokaler i staden Sofia. Polisen förhör några av de anställda, och får veta att det finns ytterligare ett callcenter i närheten. Några av poliserna sätter sig i sina bilar och kör dit. När de kommer fram är det tomt på folk, och nedsläckt. Men datorerna finns kvar – och visar sig vara fulla av bevismaterial. Bland annat listor med falska identiteter och bolagsnamn. Det visar sig att bedragarna har mer än 80 företagsnamn till sitt förfogande, med tillhörande hemsidor, berättar åklagare Manuel Recha.
Och ett av dem är Qteck.
Kaliber kontaktar "Ross Matthews"Kaliber har varit i kontakt med flera personer som jobbat på callcentret. "Nikola" är en av dem. För Kaliber berättar han om tankarna när han först klev in i det luftkonditionerade kontorslandskapet i Sofia, om arbetssättet och lögnerna. Idag ångrar han att han nånsin satte sin fot där.
På nätforum med varningar för bedrägerier finns flera namn som representanterna från FX-leader använt när de ringt. En David Morgan, en Sylvia Core, en Ross Matthews. Det här är namn som flera av de svenskar och danskar som blivit lurade av Qteck säger att de har varit i kontakt med.
– Ross Matthews… Det han sa till mig var bland det värsta jag hört någon gång i hela mitt liv. Han visste att jag hade en syster. Han sa rakt ut vad han skulle göra med henne om han träffade henne. Sexuella anspelningar om du förstår vad jag menar. Han drog in mina barn i det här, och säger samma sak, säger Johan, som egentligen heter något annat.
Vi har fått trovärdiga uppgifter om vem Ross Matthews egentligen är – en bulgarisk kampsportare i trettioårsåldern. Vi försöker få kontakt med honom. Både via telefon, sociala medier och mail.
Vi är framme i nutid, och kontaktar också ägaren till callcentret i Sofia för en kommentar. Parallellt pågår den tyska polisens arbete med att dokumentera och utreda fynden från tillslagen i räderna. Kommer de ansvariga för bedrägerierna att ställas till svars? Kommer Eva, Anders och "Johan" att få upprättelse?

Johan Rockström is a global environmental scientist and a diligent debater of climate issues. And he has been appointed “The most powerful environmental person” in Sweden twice.
