Og er eðlilegt að við tökum inn lyf fyrir milljarða til að halda niðri einkennum þessara sjúkdóma en ekki að takast á við orsakirnar og lækna þá?

Þessir sjúkdómar sem við nefnum hér hafa verið kallaðir lífsstílssjúkdómar. Hvers vegna? Jú, vegna þess að þeir þekktust varla fyrr en á 20. öld og ef þeir þekktust þá var það í mun minni mæli en á okkar tímum. Þessi sjúkdómar fara nú fremstir í flokki sem orsakir dauðsfalla í heiminum en um 70 prósent dauðsfalla á heimsvísu stafa af þeim. Á Íslandi er hlutfallið um 90%.

Hvernig getum við snúið þessari þróun við og stutt líkamann í að viðhalda heilbrigði ævina út?

Það er ótrúlega góð tilfinning að vita að maður sjálfur getur haft áhrif á heilsu sína – að maður sé ekki bara eins og korktappi úti á rúmsjó sem hefur ekkert að segja um það hvert ferðinni er heitið. Að maður getur virkilega haft áhrif á það hvort maður veikist eða ekki. Við sækjumst flest eftir aukinni vellíðan, orku, heilbrigðu útliti og síðast en ekki síst að geta verið við góða heilsu með börnum okkar og barnabörnum eins lengi og kostur er. Þess vegna skiptir máli að huga að lífsstílnum.

Í þáttunum ætlum við að bjóða upp á fjölbreyttar og fræðandi umræður um allt sem tengist heilsu og heilbrigði, kafa djúpt í heilsutengd málefni og heilbrigðiskerfið og spyrja gagnrýnna spurninga. Journalist Cat McShane investigates the international yoga movement headed by Gregorian Bivolaru, the spiritual guide arrested by French police in November 2023 and charged with human trafficking, organised kidnapping, rape and organised abuse of weakness by members of a sect.

“Nobody joins a cult. You just get sucked in,” says Penny, the mother of a university tutor from London.

In 2017, Penny’s daughter Miranda joins a yoga charity with studios in London and Oxford. The classes make Miranda feel amazing and the people make her feel loved. “There was this sense that these people cared,” says Miranda.

But as Miranda becomes more deeply involved with the international yoga movement that her group in London is part of, her mother Penny starts to worry. “When she rang us, she'd be speaking in very hushed tones,” says Penny.

Miranda has fallen under the spell of guru Gregorian Bivolaru. She joins thousands of his followers from around the world on a free holiday at a coastal resort in Romania. It’s part of a search for spiritual enlightenment which will see her driven through Paris blindfolded and doing sex work in Prague.

Season 2: The Disciples. The cult of Nigerian prophet TB Joshua. A story of miracles, faith and manipulation, told by people from around the world, who gave up everything for one of the most powerful religious figures of the century. Lured by TB Joshua’s claimed healing powers, they live as disciples in a guarded Lagos compound, cut off from family and friends.

Season 1: The Abercrombie Guys. An investigation into claims of sexual exploitation made against the former CEO of fashion giant Abercrombie & Fitch. He and his British partner were accused by several men, recruited for sex events they hosted around the world.

Two years, two months and two days! This is what forms the time line of one man's quest for the simple life and a unique social experiment in complete self reliance and independence. Henry David Thoreau published Walden in 1884. Originally drafted as a series of essays describing a most significant episode in his life, it was finally released in book form with each essay taking on the form of a separate chapter.

Thoreau's parents were in financial straights, but rich intellectually and culturally. The young Henry was educated in the best of schools in their home town, Concord, Massachusetts and went on to graduate from Harvard, where he read history, philosophy, theology and literature. He commenced working as a school master in Concord but soon quit when he discovered that he was not ideologically suited to methods employed in those days which included corporal punishment. During this time, a chance meeting with the great philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson marked a turning point in his life.

Deeply influenced by Emerson's ideas and his Transcendentalism cult, Thoreau embarked on the Walden experiment. The Transcendentalism movement was an amalgam of Buddhism, German and English Romanticism, Hindu teachings, Confucianism and placed great emphasis on emotional wellbeing, self reliance and personal truths rather than social norms. It rejected society's dominance over the individual.

Walden Pond was located in a property owned by Emerson. Here, Thoreau built a cabin and proceeded to live a completely self sufficient life, gathering his own food and preparing it, sleeping and reading and appreciating nature as the whim took him. He meticulously recorded every experience and this forms the body of work known as Walden.

The book received a lukewarm reception when it first appeared, but went on to gather cult status with the advent of the Flower Power generation, the anti-establishment movements against the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights movement. The concepts of individual freedom and individual choice became ingrained in the American psyche as a new generation of Americans re-discovered Walden.

Walden's main appeal lies in its exploration of themes like solitude, economy, the simple life and the Higher Laws that he describes which relate to man's relationship to nature. Thoreau's style is attractive and easy, full of nuggets of folksy wisdom. Modern proponents of simplifying life, those who oppose our over reliance on technology and advocates of inner spiritual awakening are sure to find Walden a valuable and rewarding read.
