İnsanoğlunun yeryüzü imtihanına ilk günden itibaren şahitlik eden Mekke ve çevresi, Kâbe’nin izinde mukaddes belde olarak tarih boyunca değerli olmuştur. Kâbe’ye yönelen her yürek, Hz. İbrahim’in çağrısına cevap vererek mübarek bir yolculuğa çıkmış; hac, meşakkatte arınmayı, sabırda huzuru arayanların seferi olmuştur. Dünyada sadece bir “ yolcu ” olduğumuzu hatırlatan bu eşsiz sefer, İslam’ın temel ibadetlerinden biridir. Şartları taşıyan her Müslüman için haccetmek farzdır. Nitekim Kur’an-ı Kerim’de Allah Teâla şöyle buyurur: “ Yolunu gücü yetenlerin Beyt’i haccetmeleri, insanlar üzerinde Allah’ın bir hakkıdır. ” Hac, sağlığı ve maddi durumu yerinde, hacca gitmek için imkânları yeterli olan her erkek ve kadın için sorumluluktur. Hac zamanı dışında Mekke ve Medine’yi ziyaret ederek umre ibadetini yerine getirmek ise her Müslüman için bahtiyarlıktır.

“Dostlar, arkadaşlar” anlamındaki “ashab” ile “gölgelik/sundurma” manasına gelen “suffe” kelimelerinden müteşekkil bir tamlama olan Ashab-ı Suffe kavramı, Mescid-i Nebevi’nin giriş kısmında barınan ve ilim tahsil eden bir grup sahabeyi ifade eder. Allah Resulü’nün (sas) gölgesinde yetişen bu talihli kimseler, ekserisini muhacirlerin oluşturduğu, Medine’de bir çatı bulamayan yoksul ve kimsesiz Müslümanla idi. Buna istinaden mekânın adına Suffe; burada kalan sahabilere de Ashab-ı Suffe ya da Ehl-i Suffe denilmiştir. Ashab-ı Suffe’nin nüfusu hakkında olarak yetmiş ve dört yüz sayılarından bahsedilse de kaynaklarda farklı görüşler yer alır. Buna göre aralarından aile kurarak şahsi evine yerleşen, vefat eden, sefere giden, farklı nedenlerle başka muhitlere taşınan ve yeni katılan kimselere bağlı olarak Ashab-ı Suffe sayı bakımından değişkenlik arz etmiştir. Tüm zamanlarını, “Yaşayan Kur’an” olan Resulullah’ın (sas) adeta dizinin dibinde geçiren bu ilim ve irfan ordusu, vahyin feyiz ve bereketinden alabildiğine istifade edip İslam’ı ana kaynağından öğrenme fırsatı bulmuştur. Yanı başında bulundukları Allah Resulü (sas) de bu güzide insanları ilmek ilmek işlemiştir. Bu ilim yolcularıyla özel sohbetler yapmış, onların dertlerini dinlemiş, yalnızlarına ortaklık etmiş, sofralarına misafir olup yemeklerini paylaşmıştır. Peygamber Efendimiz, ilim tahsilinden başka meşgalesi olmayan, geceleri ibadetle geçiren, gündüzleri genellikle oruçla olan ve tüm mesailerini İslam’a adayan bu hamiyetli insanlara, gösterdikleri fedakârlık sebebiyle birçok defa iltifat etmiştir. “Ey Ashab-ı Suffe! Size müjdeler olsun ki her kim şu sizin bulunduğunuz hal ve sıfatta olup bulunduğu durumdan razı olarak bana mülaki olursa o benim refiklerimdendir.” (Süyuti, Camiul-ehadis, 1:107) ifadesi bu kapsamda zikre değerdir.
