Adellijke dames richtte eind 19e eeuw de Bond ter bestrijding eener gruwelmode op. Vogels werden massaal gedood om hun verenpracht. Dat leidde in 1899 tot de start van Vogelbescherming. Het eerste grote succes kwam snel: de Vogelwet die alle inheemse vogels beschermde. Vele bedreigingen voor vogels werden gekeerd. Maar er waren altijd weer nieuwe, zoals de intensieve landbouw. Funest voor de grutto en vele andere vogels. Luister naar de geschiedenis van vogels beschermen in Nederland door interviews met oudgedienden bij Vogelbescherming. Vele jaren zetten zij zich in voor de vogels. Wat waren hun drijfveren, hoe kijken zij terug – en wat kunnen we daarvan leren? Wij zijn Timo Roeke, sr. natuurbeschermer bij Vogelbescherming, en Arjan Berben, hoofdredacteur van het blad Vogels.

Yvanka en Maike dachten dat kinderen opvoeden een uitdaging was, tot ze een hond namen. En โ ach vooruit โ nog eentje. Maar hoe krijg je een makkelijke hond? Zo een die luistert en mee kan naar afspraken. Die rustig blijft liggen als de bel gaat en nooit tegen iemand opspringt.
Hondenmoeders is een zoektocht naar hulp. Yvanka van der Zwaan en Maike Jeuken verzamelen tips van experts, krijgen bijval van bekende hondenvaders en -moeders en fantaseren over hoe de koninklijke familie toypoedel Mambo aanstuurt. Misschien is er nog hoop!

Over de makers
Yvanka van der Zwaan (1974) is schrijver en columnist. In de podcast Help, ik heb een puber! praat ze over haar leven als moeder van drie pubers. Daarnaast is ze ook moeder van twee labradoodles: Wolf en Beertje.
Maike Jeuken (1971) is schrijver en journalist. Haar samengestelde gezin telt zeven kinderen en twee liefdesbabyโs: golden retriever Linus en maltipoo Loesje.

The course introduces one of the most important and potent mid-century intellectual movements - the existentialist movement - through a series of black Atlantic thinkers. Our keystone will be Frantz Fanon’s Black Skin, White Masks, which is arguably the most important work of Black existentialism from this period. Across the semester we will see why existentialism, with its focus on the ambiguities and ambivalences of lived-experience, had such a deep impact on Black thinkers across the diaspora. We will see these existentialist insights register in literature, philosophy, and film. Old and new.
